The whole anime is a joke that shouldn't work but does. Cid is literally a human library of npc consistent reoccuring background character tropes while Shadow is the embodiment of the plot. In Eminence in shadow, Shadow literally slam dunks down the plot into the position of subplot taking the role of the plot for himself. He doesn't have plot armour, he is the plot and we need the armour.

I’m honestly not convinced Gigguk actually thinks Eminence in Shadow is bad. I think he classifies it that way for the same reason he states his honest opinions on a podcast called “Trash Taste”. Honestly, I read the manga a long time ago and was super hyped when I saw it got an anime, then I watched the anime and I was like: "They really went all in in making this shit actually cool" The manga focuses more on the comedy, on Sid's perspective and such, making everything way more light hearted and amusing, but the anime actually benefited a lot from straying from the manga. I was reading the manga before the anime was announced and it was one of the funniest I've read in recent times, but I was worried that the adaptation would be another low effort shovelshow. I don't think I ever actually cringed at all during this show. Like there is cringy stuff that Cid does, but because you know the exact mindset of WHY he does it all, it just loses all the cringe factor because it makes sense why HE is doing it. Most cringe comes from the thought of "This is stupid." Or "That doesn't make sense." But when Cid does it, those thoughts are replaces with "This is exactly what Cid wants to happen." All that should be cringe is instead replaced with a sense of accomplishment. That's what allows the show to transcend the cringe and soar to peak levels of entertainment.
@AziSlays

facts. before watching this I didn't even understand why someone would consider it bad anime because it was so thoroughly entertaining. It doesn't matter that the characters are stupid, it doesn't matter that their motives are stupid, it doesn't matter that everything is so over the top. Because the story is about a psychotic roleplayer gaming the shit out of the entire world and ALL of those "flaws" feed into it perfectly. Also I started watching it on accident while trying to look for Isekai Nonbiri Nouka instead but I was high as shit and got given the wrong name of the show initially, and the first few eps I was thinking the whole time "so how does this all blow up so bad he becomes a farmer?"

I think it's weirder than that. Without Cid's ridiculous bullshit, I'd be like "Eh, it's alright, I guess". Like, sure, not exactly bad, but not really that good either, and I would just forget it after a few months. It's BECAUSE the main character is such an edgy overpowered dumbass that this show is more than that. It's kinda hard to put into words in my sleep-deprived state, but basically, I think the show just doesn't work without Cid's ridiculous LARPing and how it's contrasted with the other characters taking everything seriously. On one hand, the show is doing something really stupid with its main character, but is very self-aware about it, and that somehow turns it into something really fun to watch instead of cringe, and on the other hand, the other characters who would be just kinda ok (imo), become much more interesting because they have to deal with this ridiculous DnD character who just keeps getting Nat20's. What I'm trying to say is, yes, it's well-written. But it's well-written in the sense that it does a lot of things it shouldn't do, but it does it anyway, and somehow, it works. There are a lot of aspects of this show where, if you take them individually, it's either really stupid or just very meh. But when everything is put together, it works. It's not well-written in the sense that every aspect is masterfully crafted and then assembled in a greater whole, it's well-written in the sense that they took a lot of dubious parts and managed to make them work as a whole. That's why it's so hard to talk about this show; when you do so, you end up talking about individual parts, and that ruins it. You have to actually experience the show to properly get why it's good. Basically, what I'm saying is, it's not well-written in the same way other great shows are well-written; it's just doing its own thing and somehow manages to make it good.

The best part about Cid is that you cannot blow his cover. It cannot be done. As Cid, he is SO ordinary and uninspiring that NOBODY would believe HE is Shadow, the infamous leader of Shadow Garden. You could literally blast him with an attack specifically designed to cancel his magic temporarily so that his disguise disintegrates to reveal he is Cid, and everybody who knows him will have a mental blue screen of death. They will be stuck in that eternal buffering wheel as they wait for their mind to load. At least, it makes sense to learn Batman is Bruce Wayne. In one of the movies, an analyst even figured it out and tried to blackmail him. With Cid, nobody would believe. Someone MIGHT be able to muster the words to ask why. To which, he can just smile and say, "Why not? Even now with the truth right in front of your eyes, you still refuse to believe. It is precisely as I intended it to be." Then, he just wrecks the opponent with ease that nobody can fathom before 'slowly' leaping into the air and vanishing in a flash of purple magic. The writers could full-on pull that when it all comes to a head with the Cult of Diablo, and it would be the greatest bomb-drop moment in anime.

I read some of the manga. Like what Gigguk said, MC is basically like a One Punch Isekai. Reason why he's OP is that he's hell bent on training to be stronger than a nuke. Yes a nuke (strongest power in his eyes). He went crazy trying to do that in his previous world. Magic world allows him to basically to do that. Some compare the show to Overlord mainly because of his relationship with his followers. They believe in him 100% and overthink his actions (or even inactions) and his intelligence. Basically unquestionable loyalty where many exclaimed that they would commit atrocities for him. He also doesn't seem to be into seriously romancing anyone (at least not yet). So affections are pretty 1 sided mixed with classic misunderstandings.

My theory is that this anime is like a Haruhi Suzumiya situation. Cid basically makes shit up as he goes and all of it becomes true coincidentally. Rather than being transported to another world, its more like he's in his own personal heaven where he just gets whatever he wants. He's just unaware that the world is influenced by his imagination. Its not a confirmed theory or anything, but it feels like the same concept of the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya but taken in a much different direction. Like imagine if Haruhi ever wanted to be a protagonist in a dungeons and dragons story.

What I found particularly interesting about the adaptations of this series is that both the manga and the anime made an original spin on it that fit to their medium well. The LN has both funny and serious moments, it's all about making something that can be edgy and kinda cool but also making it ridiculously funny. The manga took the full-on comedy route, even adding visual gags on top of the LN's. The anime took the discrepancy route, they adapted every single serious part seriously while keeping the essence of the jokes in. They made the entire world serious, even added some world building that wasn't there originally, all to make the difference between the world and the MC that much more noticeable.

The bath/hotspring scene is definitely a good flex. Cid not only flexed on Alexia in that scene but on an entire anime TROPE. That is truly an impressive flex.

The appeal of this anime, I think, is that the entertainment isn't derived simply from the tropes and spectacle and power-fantasy. It comes from the context and meta-knowledge of the audience, reading between the lines to know exactly the sort of absurd bullshit that the protagonist did to set things up the way he did. In the manga, they didn't even mention him stealing the piano to bring underground, but seeing that piano the first thought isn't "Oh wow, this is dramatic and cool", the first thought is instead "Jesus Christ, how much effort did he go through to get that piano down there?"

@@Zaffron77 Scamboli Reviews has a good video on it that sums up a lot of my criticisms. The manga enhances a lot of the jokes and perfects the timing of said jokes. The anime has less emphasis on the jokes making it a weird mix of silly/serious. If you like the version that takes itself more seriously, that’s fine, but imo embracing the goofiness to its fullest extent makes it so much more entertaining

So many laughably bad takes for this anime. Perhaps the funniest one is the people unironically calling it 'stupid' and 'cringe' while lacking the intelligence to understand that the cringe is intentional and often part of the comedy. This anime isnt bad, trashy, stupid or so bad its good. It's a shame that people feel so embarrassed for liking something that they have to qualify liking it with these words for fear of people judging them. The Eminence in Shadow is genuinely good, well written, hilarious, clever and one of the best anime to come out in years.

Naruto, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost In The Shell, got hooked and then came BERSERK and I don't remember what else I saw around that time, and nothing has ever been as good since and probably never will be as good.
