I started watching NWFS during a recently tough time when I was feeling extremely depressed. I watched one, and I couldn't stop. I've been watching back through the old videos like this one, and I just love knowing how much the channel has grown and what Leif has been able to achieve. We love you so much, man. When the world feels dark and I cannot find my own joy, I can share in yours and remember that I will have moments and memories like this too if I work hard and get out there. Thank you for sharing your passion and your joy, you make the world better with every video. Love from Canada!

I've just finished writing my undergraduate thesis on spiny dogfish. In the UK we completely collapsed our stock but it's great to see they're thriving over in the US. It's a shame you caught a pregnant female, but lovely footage of the babies and so pleased you released them. Adult male sharks have claspers, so if you're looking to target males only in future, might be worth checking for those!

@@OldiesAl Exactly, plus shark's gender can easily be visually identified due to the presence of the extra double appendages underneath its pelvic fins. These are called claspers. @sstflies63115 жыл бұрын
Do you know that most "fish and chips" throughout the word, unless otherwise disclosed, is various shark species? There was once a commercial for the spiny ray (dogfish) in Puget Sound many years ago- no longer. Due to abuse by anglers throughout the years the state decided it best to regulate the species for sport anglers. Lastly, that ammonia smell comes from the shark's ability to urinate through it's skin... Dogfish is best if skinned and brined in a solution of vinegar and water. Enjoy!
@NWFishingSecrets5 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Love learning about those little sharks. I've always loved them and it bugged me how other fishermen would talk about killing them and throwing them back into the water because they are tired of catching them. I think we soaked them in salt for a period of time. Also have heard of the milk method but it doesn't seem like you need to by how you like the taste just rinsing it. It brings back memories of when we would go crabbing and catch those 3ft+ sharks off the jetty. I remember one of my first ones I caught with a 300 lb braided catfish leader, fish and hook in its stomach. It was cut like it was a pair of scissor. I borrowed the same leader to land it from the guy who lost the fish. I switched to steel leader from that point on.

I get the sentiment, but sharks are high enough on the food chain that a lot of our man-made crap ends up in their meat. Spiny dogfish are lower than albacore tuna and halibut, but they still often have concerning levels of mercury. Unfortunately, animals can't escape our crap and neither can we.

Another excellent video! What a an awesome experience. Fun story, I was just telling my bud about your videos this past weekend and said that I wish you'd do one on dog fish, since I seem to catch more of them in a day than I do flounder, and look at that! My wish came true haha. Keep up the great work!

LOL dude I read your mind... Dogfish have been really thick lately, and as much as everyone always hates on them, I thought they would be a fun video to shoot. Especially impressive for first timers to put them on an actual shark. A story they will tell for a long time 😝 🎣 Thanks for the kind words Jacob, and it's so cool hearing you're sharing my channel with your friends!

From the UK hear. (11:18-11:20 mins into the video) you say if your from the UK you may have probably already eaten shark if you have had fish and chips, is this true and where in the UK would do this so I can avoid all them chippies 😂 I never want to eat shark I adore them to much to eat one 🤣. I dont want to eat another fish and chips again now 😂 P.s I still had to subscribed, you did it so humanly and the fact that you eat the whole animal is even better. Look forward to seeing more videos like this. I do love the catch and cook videos (seafood versions rather than land)

Bro, you are you are a really good person. I thought you were gonna take those baby sharks home and keep them as pets but you are a really good person so you let them live their real life. Good job.❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊

Did u know that sharks have two penises? I found that out and I feel kinda stupid bc claspers IS PLURAL
@jameskoch71904 жыл бұрын
Spaced Out Claspers are not penises .They are merely external structures designed for the purpose of more secure contact. There is no internal structure similar to a urethra that is found in mammals in the claspers.Now snakes are different matter, they have what is called a hemi-penis, not two per se but one that has a divided head. Lucky bastards.

What an incredible video! Honestly bro you are such a great person and I love the fact you emphasize being kind to animals, I dig it bro. You’re the nicest fisherman I have met and you remind me of myself so bad haha. I’m 26 and I live in Colorado, I love fishing for trout mostly, that’s how I originally found you. Anyways, have an incredible day brother and I can’t wait for more videos!!!!

I mean they are left by the mother anyway to fend for themselves so no actual harm was done to affect their life. Great video. I didn't know you can keep 15 of those guys though lol those babies would've been good in my saltwater tank
@luster54974 жыл бұрын
Parental care and premature birth are not the same thing. Premature Birth has extremely low survival rate without actual help from a outside source.
@davidkirkland31954 жыл бұрын
@@luster5497 it wasn't necessarily premature birth they were about ready to pop out.
@luster54974 жыл бұрын
@@davidkirkland3195 Premature; early, half done, and almost ready. It still counts. I'm NOT condoning and condamning anyone here. Just saying Premature is never a good thing. He clearly didn't do it on purpose, shit happens. As long as he learn to spot the next pregnant female, then even if all the babies died, it will still do something good.
@davidkirkland31954 жыл бұрын
@@luster5497 yeah I know what you mean. There are too many of them in the puget sound anyways though. I believe the limit is still 15 a day which is crazy.
