Join me as I embark on a stealth camping adventure in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, using a rented U-Haul van as my base camp. I explore the unique urban lifestyle on foot, by kayak, and by van. I chose Williamsburg because it is home to a special location called "Van Alley" where many urban dwellers choose to park their homes on wheels.
I also take a thrilling kayaking trip down the East River, offering breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and iconic landmarks including the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges. The heavy boat traffic passing by and strong winds made for a challenging paddle.
Whether you're a van life enthusiast, a city lover, or simply looking for a unique travel experience, this video is for you. Don't miss out on this incredible adventure!

... that NYPD notice is comedy gold - pretty sure since looting and daylight robberies of stores goes unpunished , you're safe to stay for a night , or more , seeing how someone built a shelter right on the street lol ... I'd be more concerned about being exposed to that East river water ... safe travels ...

@roger3786 I had a friend that was in the area this week, and the parks department put out tow notices on vehicles this time. Apparently, they are demolishing the white and blue building next to van alley. So, at some point, everyone is going to have to vacate N 11th St. I just wanted to follow up. 😀

So so so awesome., another one of my stomping grounds from the 70s and 80s, I use to work in Williamsburg, and bushwick,and St George, SI, then pick up my friend after work at the navy yard. The city was giving grants to the middle class city dwellers to buy the old late 1800s to early 1900s old Victorians and brownstone houses for $50-125k because they were in some bad neighborhoods back then, look at them now,it really looks a lot cleaner, even that run down area is still way better than it was back then. There would have been different gangs everywhere. I use to travel everywhere that you have been so far, hunts point, up to mt St Vincent’s over to Brooklyn college to great kills, lemon creek over to the kill van kill, up the palisades, forest hills and Astoria park, flushing meadows and flushing bay. So many waterways there., and to think me and my friends thought nothing of swimming in those waters back then. Nice to see you doing such a good thing with your camera and not to mention that griddle, honestly didn’t know if you could eat that entire quesadilla. Oh and those break waves, bro we use to go crazy when a giant oil tanker full would come by, it would suck us out to the bay and then flush us back in., so much (crazy insane) fun for a teenager. You definitely have a quality kayak to handle them waves! Keep rocking the boat, love it ❤

That was interesting. I slept in my van many times, especially when taking long road trips. I just needed a place to stop and catch some Zzzz's before proceeding. It could be an RV campground, a rest area or even a Walmart parking lot. I wasn't looking to live in it. Still, for a few nights it was fine and comfortable. I think with housing costs so high in NYC, there is probably many looking for an affordable way to live. Like full time in a mini RV. That was probably an option for some. Then when more find out about it, and park their little van houses there, it gets the attention of locals and law enforcement. Most likely to not have these vehicles parked long term or permanently. I've been on powerboats in the East River a few times. They ranged from 25 feet to 36 feet. The currents can be strong, especially around the bridge pilings, but the boats power through it no problem. On a day like when you were paddling on the river, it's a smooth ride regardless of which direction you are going. But during some events, or holiday weekends especially, there is insane boat traffic. There's commercial traffic, ferry traffic, huge motor yachts, down to even runabouts for those bold or skilled enough to be in those conditions. There's huge wakes combined with current that can make for a very wild ride. The bigger the better when it's like that. I never paddled on the East River, Harlem river or the Hudson. I was asked a few times to be a kayak spotter for swimmers swimming around Manhattan. For one reason or another, I never was able to do it. Maybe some day I'll give it a go. In the meantime, thanks for sharing your adventure.

Matt, amazing first exit off the Kosciusko br. used to be empty 20 + years ago, now 18 out of 24 hrs is traffic. show how much development & populations boom there since city re-zone from industrial Williamsburg. I live behind the left of the 2 brown 21 story buildings where the ferry boat just passed 16:48 & in the 80's the beige square building next to it behind the white short Sanitation building on the docks. 27:04 Your cooking should be another NYC R.V cooking class video? LOL. 30:20 They are their own enemy - if they like to stay - should be low key & clean up better than average street. other wise time is not on their side sooner or later. The East River gets really choppy with the wind and currents, I have taken the NYC Ferry on the East River and the boat bobs up and down (especially when it stops at a dock to let passengers off) and I get a little sea sick on it. It just does not look that bad until you get on it. I have walked over the Manhattan Bridge several times, the subway trains make extremely loud noises, it is unbelievably loud. Honestly, you freaked me out a little by saying you were starting "van life", I immediately became concerned. 1 minute later, you clarified, an LOL moment for me. I think it could be fun as a recreational vehicle. I don't like van life as housing, especially in New York. It is not safe, everyone is in your business in NY. And I am suspicious of anyone who lives in a van in New York. Sure, you could do it for a short time, but you will be noticed and there are people who will prey on that. Public parking spaces are highly valued.

You drove right by my old apt on N 11th St! The East River seems super gnarly to paddle on. Between the ferries and the currents, you're a brave man. There is a tiny island called Belmont Island just south of Roosevelt Island that I watched a video of a dude camping on the other day. I certainly wouldn't do that but might be a fun challenge for you haha Im also a member at Vital. It rules.

That "van alley" used to be a dangerous area, all real New Yorkers avoid the neighborhood. Now it's gotten too well known and the foot traffic in the area had increased, also thanks to the gentrification of Williamsburg. But even then... some KZbinrs got harassed while filming in the alley. It's really a gamble if you want to stay at the van alley for the beautiful view.
@TwoFeetOutdoors
@TwoFeetOutdoors 21 күн бұрын
A friend who was in the area said that more notices were put out yesterday. This time, by the parks department. Apparently, the large white and blue warehouse next to van alley is being torn down soon, and I believe they are incorporating the land to Bushwick Inlet Park, making more waterfront park land. I've just heard of van alley and wanted to see it for myself and share my experience with others. It was a fun experience. Overall, currently, Williamsburg seems to be a pretty safe community. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Hi Matt Just found your site today. I bike in the boroughs frequently starting from Astoria Park. You get views of the city that are spectacular. As a matter of fact I was on one of my bike tours and picked up the NYC Ferry at the 90th st dock. Took the ferry all the way to Wall St dock. Views going under the 59th st bridge, Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge were incredible. I also viewed your N Brother I. Vid. Are you familiar with the General Slocun maritime disaster?
