What a gorgeous day. Quite a change from Monday night. Thanks for the walk today. You live in what is still a very interesting part of NYC. Many challenges to urban life globally. Historically developers have always played a hand in New York life. There is only so much ‘Manhattan’ and it’s worth a fortune. Which leads me to ask, how are they doing at Moishe’s Bakery?

Joe thank you so much for walking along with us today! It truly was a gorgeous day and we feel so lucky to live in this vibrant neighborhood. Moishe’s Bakery location on Second Avenue in our neighborhood of the East Village which opened in the 1970s sadly closed a few years ago but thankfully Moishe’s mom still owns and operates their bakery on Grand Street in the Lower East Side. We will have to go their and check in on them as it has been a few months since we were there.

Sorry, I was late but I did go back and watch from the beginning, and as usual, your live stream was most enjoyable. I loved the gardens, the history, the buildings, and vintage stores, and mostly seeing the three of you. So glad for your nice weather and that you feel better. Big Hugs 🤗

The weather was perfect for a walk; I enjoyed it so much. All the community gardens were amazing. It shows people care about their neighborhood. I'm thankful you all three are feeling better too. Extra extra good! Thanks James Karla and Hudson!

EB Gray yes the weather was absolutely perfect for our walk and we are so glad you enjoyed watching. We love the community gardens as they really are an oasis and beautiful place for residents to visit. It is also nice to see that the herbs and medicinal plants 🌱 which are growing there are available for the public to pick and make use of. Hudson sends big kisses to you too!

The role the gardens have played in rejuvenating the area - while seemingly avoiding gentrification - is really interesting and inspiring. I can't imagine how bad it must have been in the recent past. Cities in Britain, like Manchester and Liverpool, suffered in the 1970s and 80s but New York seemed more dystopian, perhaps. The "street culture" was really happening and influential though. I can relate to the Debbie Harry story as I've been a bit of a Blondie fan since I was 10. By default I came into possession of the Parallel Lines and Eat to the Beat albums. As a teenager I liked to draw/copy the typefaces. 46:24 that breed of terrier always brings to mind 'snowy' from Herge's Tin Tin.

I grew up on Avenue C...( mostly)... the tern Alphabet City began in the 80s...we did not refer to it as Alphabet City...The first time I heard the term it was an outsider who said,," oh you live in Alphabet City".....I personally think that the people who came from the suburbs looking for drugs were the ones who began using that term...

When I was very young...there was one street of push carts left..from 6th to 7th street on Avenue C.....I was told that before that Avenue C was wall to wall push carts.
@JamesandKarla2 жыл бұрын
Cynthia that is so cool that there were still some pushcart vendors on Avenue C when you were little. Some of the old mom-and-pop shop owners have even shown us their pushcarts that they saved from when their business was originally founded on the streets of the Lower East Side. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us.

Thanks for the first Hudvember live stream of the month in Alphabet city which runs from 14 st to Houston St. Our heroes start out in, NYHA (New York City Housing Authority) project. Karla explained that a shooting happen a few blocks away from Union Square during the halloween festivities and that they were feeling better after they were under the weather last week. As they walked, they showed all the old tenements and housing projects around the area, not to mention the beautiful painted mulroes that are on the walls like a Puerto Rico pride one and the burned down lots that has become beautiful community gardens. A far cry from what Alphabet City used to be where every avenue used to be dangerous, like "Ave A" was alright to walk, "Ave B" was bad, "Ave C' was crazy and "Ave D" was Death. As our heroes continue to walk, they talked about super storm sandy and how they were with out power. They passed by a community garden dedicated to spanish activist Carmen PaBon, more lower income housing, a Puerto Rica family owed restaurant called "Quessa Dela", Bracetti Plaza, Nuyorican Poets Cafe and Los Amigos Community Garden. As they continue to walk, they notice sculptures in those community gardens from people they knew like the artist "Rev". They continue to walk and notice the beautiful community gardens like the "peach tree garden" and saw a cat in the window with a halloween pumpkin. Our heroes then told a story about getting free tickets to see Debbie Harry at a club around the area called the World Club", which was featured in the cult classic movie "King of New York" with Christopher Walken. Hudson mat a dog named Charlie who was very friendly. They continue to walk, passing by more community gardens, old store fronts, new buildings next to old ones, a closed down store front that used to be a place called " Momma's kitchen", which our heroes used to go to. They then passed by a thrift store called "3rd n Bizzaar" and ran into their favorite librarian, who just had a baby. They passed by a very colorful building which looked like a cake. They passed by a place where Maddona used to live and worked and the Sixth Street Community Garden. They continue to walk and talk to the chat, passing Saint Bridges Church, a old building from 1886, Tomkins Square Park and The Charlie Parker Residence. They passed by "The East Village Vintage Collective" and walked around a bit more, then they ended the live stream. Thank you so much for the great walk and the hard work that went into it. Stay safe cool and dry and enjoy the rest of your day.
