For long-time fans of the show - this was such an incredible moment. We witnessed Andy go through horrific events in his life within the past decade and to see he finally gets respect and love from his police family was so touching. This is another reason why compelling, quality episodic TV can be so much more connected with the viewer since we grow over time with the characters.

So, one of the things I love about the writing of the show is how Irvin is careful not to insinuate himself in the strictly 'police' side of his job. He isn't a sworn officer, but he's deeply embedded in the life of the squad. But the character 'knows his role', so to speak, and keeps to his responsibilities... even when he'd love to be part of what's happening. In this scene I'm sure Irvin would have loved to be down with the squad, but that particular group was for sworn officers. He was included, but 'stayed in his lane'. That's hard for anybody to manage. But being a gay and not very assertive male in a room full of alpha-type personalities in the 90's was especially hard. And Brochtrup pulled that off with a lot of grace.

I remember when my C/O called me in his office and told me I had passed my BTZ NCO exam with a 97% and passed my orals as well. Col. Sansone asked me if I was ready to be a Sgt./Reporting Official. I responsed the same way Andy did. I told hin honestly that I didn't know. He looked at me and said He was sure I was ready. The first day back to duty after draw my rifle from the armory I walked into my sqaudron and all the cops I worked with, both Securiry Forces and Law enforcement were lined on each side of the hallway with Col. Sonsone and my 1st shirt SMsgt Wilson at the end. They were all lined up to tack my Sgt. stripes on. I knew what was about to happened so I asked 1 resquest of alll the cops. That was to hold off for a moment. I walk to the end of the lines came to attention and gave my best salute to Col. Sansone and addressed my 1st shirt as Sir. I gave them the honor of being the first to tack my stripes on. They each shook my hand and congratulated me. Col. Sansone looked at me and tild me again that he believed I was ready to be a supervisor to lower ranking Airman. My 1st shirt tild me if I ever had any doubts to just look at the men and women that I served with. When I turned around and saw all my brithers and sisters that I stood post with standing at attention waiting for me to walk the line for the tacking ceremony I realized I was going to do okay. That being said, I'm extemely glad squadron exercises weren't called that shift because after every one tacked my stripes on I was pretty sure I couldn't have fought my way out of a wet paper bag with a freshly honed Ka-bar. One of the proudezt moments of my military service. I would often go to my C/O or 1st shirt and ask for advise or just ask them about tjeir experiences as fresh supervisors. Spent the last 17 of my 20 years making sure I earned every stripe on my uniforms.

That guy EARNED that over and over again. So well deserved for that character. He's the mold for the cops we NEED on today's force. I believe the BEST cops know when to bend/break the rules in order to serve justice properly. We don't need cops like Derek Chauvin. But I also believe cops that are too much of a stickler for the rules, like the Lt. Bale character, wouldn't ever get justice served either. This is one of my favorite episodic and police drama shows and Sipowicz is one of my favorite characters.

GOAT of TV series. Because we haven't seen anywhere else such a 12-year redemption. Because those cops trying to have a life while sticking here and there patches on the misery of a sick society, were of a profound humanity never equalled. And for so many other reasons (truth of the scenarios, relevance of the castings, accuracy of the actors' management, strong and sober expressiveness of the actors)... ... I am French and, alas, there are only 4 seasons on DVD. Could you, please,, tell me exactly what episode this beautiful scene is from (which has two meanings: police investigators congratulating Sipowicz, and the actors on the show applauding Dennis Franz)? Thanks 🙏

I t would of been a much better scene if they would of had old characters show up as well. Captain Fancy, Diane and Sergeant Martinez would of made much more..It's still a good scene.
@ellenchristensen7160 Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. The living characters. Some have suggested Bobby should have been in the scene saluting, as well, but well, he's dead and would have made the scene cheesy. Fancy, Martinez, Rodriguez, Diane, Gibson, Kelly...and others. It would have made the scene so much better. Those actors probably wouldn't appear. Too much money.

@RogerBates73 жыл бұрын
Why not? Only the desk Sergeant was his equal in that group. Sergeant outranks Officer and Detective in the NYPD. He was also being saluted as a show of respect for his promotion. John is a civilian employee and Bale is a Lieutenant, which is likely why they didn't line up for the salute.

And all the lights in the squad room are turned off, and the police building isn't ADU compliant, and none of the actors knows how to stand at attention. You're the guy who won't watch Game of Thrones because he doesn't believe in dragons. Great story telling isn't always about getting the facts right. You should write a book or a screenplay sometime. Be sure to post it here. Wanker.
