I work with mentally ill patients. If someone has a psychotic episode and is taken to the hospital, they are usually treated and released the same day. Hospitals have slashed the number of inpatient beds. If a psychotic person comes in off his meds. The hospital medicates him and releases him or her as soon as possible. Talk to ER doctors and they will tell you that they often get the same person coming back several times each month, but getting someone placed long-term against their will is an arduous process even if they have proven that they are unable to care for themselves.

This is definitely true! The number of people with mental illness has increased dramatically since Covid and people with severe mental illness are running around in the streets on a daily cause hospitals don’t have enough beds. It’s sad & I believe it’s going to continue to get worse

Living in NYC, I've been lucky. Just lucky. Not the case for a lot of people here. A group to actively take homeless people off the streets (especially in winter or extreme heat.) is needed. When your safety and the public's safety is at risk, then they should step in. At this point, New York government neglects public safety.
