The moment when she comes closer to her son's dead body, how her voice changes, you can literally feel a deep sense of grief coming from a mother that got her most precious treasure stolen from her. What she says after, that she would have kept his place for him alongside her, knowing that he could've disagreed, tops this sequence off.(Spoiler alert) In the endgame cinematic when they fight with Inarius, i can't get out from the feeling ,that even after being stabbed by him, she still gives him choice, the whole sequence prior to that shows that she wanted to talk but on her own terms. One on one, and through the later sequence when she stabs him in return, i can't help myself not to feel hate towards Inarius. He had lied to his children promising ascension that will never happen, he decided to cowardly run a away from the responsibility for his actions and instead sacrifice his children as a matter of getting himself back to heaven. When Lilith said "Silence is their judgment", you can really feel the desperation and terror in Inarius's voice. TLDR: Voice cast and animation folks at BLIZZARD did a phenomenal job making those characters alive believable

In my opinion the part of the prophecy that said "a spear of light will pierce Hatred's heart" could also be interpreted as Lilith stabbing Inarius with his own spear. He had become so hateful towards Lilith and Sanctuary in general.
@ShadowKain666

@@rodrigoordonez2295 This is the tragedy of both the Mother and Father of Sanctuary. By the time of Diablo 4, Inarius and Lilith were both consumed by Mephisto's Hatred. A twisted plan the Lord of Hatred set all of us on. The main character, Lilith, Inarius, and most of the side characters we bring with us are driven by Hatred, pawns in Mephisto's long game. Inarius and Lilith are not the characters we see in D4. These versions of them are twisted by Hatred incarnate. Inarius and Lilith, when not being manipulated by Hatred, are complex but ultimately benevolent. My hope is that we eventually find a way to bring Inarius and Lilith back, free of Hatred's corruption, and we can fight for a better future for Sanctuary - finding allies in fellow Nephalem, the Father's light, and Mother's blood; Perhaps even finding demonic allies as well, those demons that still roam Sanctuary and elsewhere, wanting to be free of the eternal conflict and live in peace with the Nephalem and humanity. We know these demons exist, and (spoiler alert) can even meet one such demon in the desert that has bound his spirit with another to live amongst humanity and indulge in the creations and creature comforts of humanity. D4's tagline is "return to darkness". What better way to showcase this than allow players to dive into humanity's darker nature, to strike truer to Rathma's balance and Sanctuary's first and intended nature. In prior games, we allied ourselves almost universally with the angelic side of the eternal conflict, to *disastrous* consequence.

@@rodrigoordonez2295 Mephisto also foreshadows this, as during one of the sequences where he bails us out of like the 3rd trance we get into, he proudly states that Inarius had hatred his in his heart that was greatly worsened from his torture. Inarius' heart at this point was little more than a ball of pure, high-condensed spite.

Regarding Lilith's motivation being "up for interpretation" (motherly feelings vs wanting to win and end the Eternal Conflict): she absolutely doesn't seem to mind "the weak" being torn apart by wolves when she's chatting with Elias in one of D4 cutscenes (A3 if I remember right). That was also a human - i.e. one of her children - being torn up. She says "I have not come to save, but to empower; in my shadow, the strong will oppose the might of Hell itself; let the weak fend for themselves." If her 'motherly love' only applies to those who are strong enough to be by her side when she goes to conquer Hell, and the rest can bugger off and 'fend for themselves', then her values and motivations are pretty clear, no? If she values her children purely on the "how useful is this one to me for conquering hell?" scale, then imo it's very little to do with motherly love and everything to do with wanting to win the conflict and become the most powerful entity + army in existence. Which btw is pretty cool, and I think she's very well written as a villain. But like, she flat out states "I'm not here to save humanity/nephalem", and somehow people still try to spin the "she's just trying to save her children" angle.

Honestly it’s really crazy how Blizzard constructed a story where the player really doesn’t know who to trust with Sanctuary. This was my first Diablo game and when I first met Inarius I was like “oh he looks cool. But he’s a total a-hole” and Lilith is “Yeah she’s a demon and inherently evil but… are her plans bad for US?” And clearly they probably would be but we can’t be sure about it. @@NyxVellum It doesn't make sense in Blizzard's monetary plans for Diablo 4 since they're incapable of creating multi-linear storytelling in MMO or in any game they've created in their lifespan. It could have been a fight to take down the prime evils and give that power to Lillith in order for her to break the prison we're in between angels and demons - maybe seperate our world from theirs entirely. The amount of storytelling potential in that is insane, but Blizzard would rather go the safe route and repeat the story over and over with possession and soulstones..

I thoroughly enjoyed this take on Lilith. I honestly believe that at the first creation of her children she was killing to protect. When she comes back both times I think time in the hole left her with a bad taste in her mouth. I was glad to see her kill Inarius and I think she deserved more than what she got but she was a villian by the time of D4. Her hatred of everyone was so out of control that it was no longer about saving it was about revenge. I mean she could have just killed Inarius, but instead she played with his emotions and then painfully ripped the light right out of him. She went a little cra cra.

Great video. It confirmed my suspicions, Lilith isn’t the evil “demon” that everyone made her out to be. She’s far from perfect, after all she has committed atrocities but her history shows she’s always had our best interests as a collective whole at heart, at least from a future standpoint. (SPOILER WARNING) The problem with her is how she uses people to get what she needs. Yorin for example, was innocent as all hell, and she willingly threw him to the wolves in exchange for what she needed. Granted if I were to play Devil’s advocate she JUST got out of the void, with barely any followers left, and has very few strings to pull in order to do what SHE thinks is necessary to bring out our strengths to end this war with her as the victor. But through these actions I can see why people would deem her evil, and yes I agree it isn’t morally right. But morality, as we’ve seen in the campaign, can often steer you from your goal. Look at Lorath’s compassion towards Donan’s death. Had he left Donan they probably would of caught up to Nyrelle and mephisto’s soulstone would be safe and not in the hands of a reckless teenager. In any case we’ll just have to see how this all plays out as the seasons progress.

I think by the confines of this universe (which is awful and brutal) she isn't that bad. A high council member representing HEAVEN literally wiped out half of humanity in D3, and since the conception of Sanctuary both realms of Heaven/Hell have caused so much blood shed and carnage. If it wasn't for Tyrael the heavens were going to descend upon Sanctuary and wipe it from existence. All the destruction she caused was for a purpose though, a bloody purpose but there was a reason behind it. Andariel and Duriel had turned on the brothers before, and she wanted the blood shed to bring them into Sanctuary using them as weapons of war AGAINST HELL. I believe there was a line in the campaign where she wanted to use Andrariel as a font to siphon power from her, so it's fairly apparent that her own kind (demons) are just tools for her as well. Her warpath and direction was fairly clear, but as mortals most aren't prepared for that type of loss, which is why the main cast opposed her and why ultimately she sounded so defeated at the end. She's not thinking short term, her entire goal is long term. She doesn't care about the immediate loss of demons, angels or humans. What she cares about is winning the eternal conflict and having her children (Sanctuary) rule both the Heavens/Hells. She would absorb her fathers essence, conquer the rest of hell, unite the rest of humanity then proceed to conquer the heavens as well. Pretty much a full extinction scenario for both Heaven/Hell, with huge losses/culling to humanity in the process. But over time her children would slowly grow back to what they once were, and any opposition or uprisings in either of the other realms would be met with swift action. All of this assuming she was true to her word (which as brutal as she is, I do believe she wants the conflict to stop and her children on Sanctuary to remain).

Another part of Yorin's fate is that Lilith needed to make a deal with Astaroth beyond just freeing him. Astaroth brushed her off even when offered freedom from his soulstone until she offered Yorin, the son of the one who imprisoned Astaroth, and that got him to agree to her terms. As unfortunate as it is, Lilith could not go anywhere near Mephisto without sacrificing Yorin to Astaroth because that was the thing that tipped Astaroth's loyalty to Mephisto enough to agree to her deal to get to Mephisto. The tragic irony is that if Yorin didn't try to charge in and stop Lilith, she would have lost then and there because Astaroth would have refused to grant her safe passage to Mephisto, and thus her plans would have fallen apart.

@@Grommash1000 beautifully put. Which is exactly why I’m lo key salty the campaign didn’t let us choose her side, and even goes out of its way to sway us to hate Lilith by showing us what she’s done to the few she’s had to sacrifice for her version of the greater good. Her death at the end was also kind of heart wrenching if you look closely. The blood coming from her eyes, call it the speculation of a madman but I honestly think those were legit tears, that she’s given us free will to rebel against both heaven and hell and fight for humanity, or technically the nephilim, and instead of siding with the only semi primordial being on our side (aside from Tyrael and maybe others, I’m fairly new to Diablo) we chose to march against her, foil her plans, and kill her. Her expression showed sadness, maybe even a hint of hatred, that her children can be so blind, following an Angel (Inarius) who hated and depowered them, others following the will of prime evils that stem from hell, who just see them as a tool to win the war, or those like the horadrim (Lorath specifically) who are too scared to follow a better alternative (Lilith) that will benefit humanity in the long run. What’s even worse is that when she returns she might actually be a villain now depending if rising sanctuary against heaven and hell is still her goal or not. It all depends on how hard our betrayal hit her

Fighting Heaven doesn't actually make much sense. We don't know why they have retreated as yet... but post Maltheal my thinking is that they wanted to separate as much for our benefit as anything else... to limit the amount the war impacts Sanctuary maybe? MOST of the remaining angels are the good guys, Imperious is an asshole yeah... but Tyreal, Auriel and Ithereal are 3/4ths of the remaining council and they are ALL cool with humans (I suppose Maltheil will eventually reform but I can't help but imagine he's going into heaven jail when he does). Ithereal I suppose might 'possibly' be swayed to side with Imperius... but I doubt it as he and Auriel BOTH were the quickest to vote that humans should be left alone and allowed to thrive with Tyreal only casting a vote on a stalemate. Tyreal and Auriel likely would NEVER pose a threat to human beings... the only way I could see heaven posing an issue would be if Ithereal swapped to Imperius and ousted human Tyreal so that the two of them outvoted Auriel........... but it's a stretch.... EVEN Imperius has got to have warmed up to humans a bit after we like, you know, aided them in keeping the demons out.

Blizzard did a copout with Lilltih to be brutally honest. We could have had a morally grey protagonist MC, and a great anti-hero in Lillith. Instead of taking out the prime evils, breaking out of the prison of angels and demons and creating a new sanctuary, we're doomed to watch the story almost literally repeat itself with a wanderer carrying a soulstone with a predictable end - Mephisto in female form, like Diablo with Leah. I get that the game is called Diablo and all, but honestly, I would have much rather Lillith be kept alive throughout at least one expansion than this, anti-climactic ending stemming from storytelling cowardice from Blizzard.

I didn't mind the ending because it reaffirms the theme of the eternal conflict. Lilith on her death bed is absolutely disgusted with our decision and essentially scolding us for not thinking about the long term. She can be 'dead' and still be an anti-hero, and considering she's a demon (and I'd also say quite a popular character) it's a pretty easy character to bring back without bending the rules of this universe at all. If this wasn't an ARPG that had to keep going or a single player game, the approach of letting you choose to side with her, or at least take the story in a different direction would've been a really cool departure. Literally conquering Hell in one campaign only for the next one to conquer the Heavens.

You can hear the grief in her voice beside the dead body of her son (props to the amazing voice acting). Even Elias says despite being her follower/ summoner, she is not “good” by any stretch of the idea while simultaneously she is the only proper hope against the chaos that is the conflict of heaven and hell. Writers imo tried to place her separate from our concept of morals and it plays well.

I think Lilith truly loves humanity as the mother, but in the way as a demon and her path wouldn't be too far off to side with the hell, well, her version of hell. She does give humanity the best she could wish for, free will, strong power and a world free from the angels. I mean angels are far worse than demons in most of Diablo's story line, they literally want to eliminate humankind multiple time, and see humans as something that needs to be cleaned, while the hell more sees humans as a usable resource. But for a human point of view, siding with Lilith wouldn't be too much different from siding with any other demon, and the chance of winning (heaven?) is even less than, for example, siding with Mephisto. But what humans really want is siding with nobody, hence Lilith, as the mother of humankind, is also the first obstacle that needs to be passed. Her last word is also true, as without her, human has to face both heaven and hell in the same time, and the cost will be higher. The problem in this is human, angel and demon all different and has different thinking about their future, and if human really wants to be what they're, I'm afraid both heaven and hell are enemies.

She's the daughter of Hatred because Mephisto is the Prime Evil of Hatred. Ergo, like a son/daughter takes a last name, she too, takes the Hatred moniker. Doesn't neccessarily mean she's hateful at all. In fact, pretty much all of her lore points to the opposite. I would have liked to see more detail on that, such as Lillith's direct manipulation of him and his Edyrem followers, her later return and possession of Uldyssian's childhood friend, turning her into a second lover. And I could be wrong here as my memory is a bit fuzzy (I intend to reread the sin war trilogy soon), while the summoning of demons did play a role in Hell's discovery of sanctuary, I don't remember it being the Vizjerei who did so. There was some kind of change in Diablo lore between D2 and D3 where the Sin War of the Vizjerei instead became known as the Mage Clan Wars in Vizjun (modern day Lut Gholein) and that's where we saw the rise of Horazon and his brother Bartuc. That said I would love to see a video focusing on Uldyssian and the events of the Sin War Trilogy. Major Spoilers here but, my favorite moments were Uldyssian basically bitch slapping Diablo, and literally Speaking Lucion (the mentioned brother of Lillith) into non-existence. Also anything mentioning Rathma, Trag Oul and Uldyssian's Brother Mendeln (later known as Kalan) who were the trio of beings who got away with remembering the events of the Sin War.

Including the events of the Sin War is, I think, necessary. Lilith is repeating history in Diablo 4 by trying to empower humanity, gain their favour, and fight against heaven and hell. Thanks for bringing that particular part of the lore up, I don't think I can get the proper canon facts unless I reread the Sin Wars books myself. Here I go again 😌

Demons don't die. They respawn when you "kill" them. The only known way to actually deal with demons more decisively is to imprison them in a soulstone. Hence, when you "kill" Lilith, she will just be reborn into Mephisto's domain. And since they chose to imprison Mesphisto in a soulstone, the realm of hatred is once again devoid of its leader...or does it? With Lilith "killed", she will now respawn in the realm of hate, free to take over her father's realm while Mephisto is away in Sanctuary.

I wish we got a choice to side with her. It’s clear from her tone when she found rathma, when she imprisons us with the sightless eye, and her final words before she’s slain, that she’s on our side. Sure she wants to raise her army in the hopes to fight, but the war she would of led us into was against both heaven and hell, and I honestly think she only wanted to see overpower them to finally have peace. No more conflict, no more pursuit of power, just a paradise like the name suggests. You can even see her crimson tears before she died, she’s saddened by our betrayal. She’s fought and killed for us and in return we destroy her

Its pretty obvious we did exactly what Mephisto wanted. He pushed them into using the soulstone because he knows exactly what they know, that they don't work for shit, but they conveniently forgot that part so that we can have another wanderer with a soulstone in their possession.. Mephisto was just sitting there in the backround "tihihihi" when he said, "Don't use it on me, that would be bad, Lillith could use it - oh nooo."

If they don't release dlc where you can fight for Lilith from the start, it's as big a ball drop as Overwatch 2. I've been playing games on and off since the 80s and can't remember a villain that had me go "wait, i think she's right" within a single cutscene. The priest is shitting on people for their flaws, and Lilith shows up saying it's ok to just be ok, and i loved it.

So this is why Mephisto is daddy Mephy and the leader of the 3 prime evils. This man orchestrated everything from the start! From Diablo hellfire to return in Diablo4. My man released his Ace in the Sleeve Inarius right before we killed him and smashed his soulstone in Diablo II. And he knew Inarius is a b*tch and would hide, and he knew Lilith ain't out smarting daddy Mephy. And he sure as hell got his brand new shiny soulstone at the end of Diablo 4! And Rathma is the real MVP. He glimpsed into Mephistos head when he merged with the snake, because Mephy is for sure a dang snake, haha. And Rathma wrote that shit down. And letting everyone play themselves and shoot themselves in the foot. Man! Blizzard did a dang good job with this one!!! What a full circle, so satisfying.

I love how all the comments are Lilith is evil “because she is the daughter of Mephisto” while completely ignoring how she never changes her story and adamantly insists on making humans meet their true potential as nephilim. All while also ignoring that our characters truly screwed up by letting Mephisto out of hell and giving him free access to sanctuary so he can bring back his son.
@BL00DYME55
@BL00DYME55 4 ай бұрын
First, I dont see a single comment saying LIlith is evil. Everyone in these comments is simping over her. Second, our character didn't screw up anything. He didn't let Mephisto out. He (or she) knew he couldn't trust himself since Mephisto kept trying to mess with his mind, so he left the decision to a (relatively) neutral party - Neyrelle. Unfortuntely she, being a naive child who just went through a terrible loss and is trying to prove herself as a new Horadrim, thought she could handle a prime evil and made the wrong choice. Again, quite understandable from her point of view/character development. Everyone keeps giving our main character crap for making wrong decisions, but he's also supposed to be this young'ish and relatively inexperienced adventurer. He's experienced in combat, yes, but not in world-altering events, and Lorath points that out a number of times throughout the story. The only person who truly f-d up seems to be Lorath himself. He let his emotions take over, and just gave up right before the most important decision of the entire story. He could've been that wise/experienced voice Neyrelle needed to hear to not make the mistake. Instead he just stayed behind and wallowed in self pity. And even after he found out what Neyrelle went off to do, he continued to do nothing, and instead just kept feeling sorry for himself. Our character can even ask Lorath "Are we seriously not gonna do anything?", to which he just makes up some excuse like "oh it's too hard" or something like that. A wise Horadrim my ass. But then again, he's been making poor selfish choices the entire game, so maybe that's very much in-character for him.

@@BL00DYME55 so it is our fault? You literally just proved my point. Our characters actions are the direct result of Mephisto being in a soul stone in nyrelles hands. Our characters weren’t unconscious or possessed they willingly said “this stupid idea sounds great let’s do it.”

I became fond of her from seeing the Diablo 4 trailer where she emerged although it gave me a different vision of what she is in the game. In the trailer, she appears as some elemental being, almost a force. I found it disappointing compared to her subsequent appearances, where she's wearing some generic looking outfit and was reduced to looking like just another boss villain. I much prefer to imagine her as that ethereal entity, above the cares of humanity or the petty and unending wars of good vs evil. Again, good content. 🤘

She is using us just as much as Mephisto but at least IT is honest about it, so far in all of the Diablo games the only one that has not had ulterior motives is Tyrael just before and after his descent (I was going to say fall but he chose to remove his own angelic mantle).

diablo 4 is has a very interesting storyline where you don't really know which side your own anymore... even when you're on the 'right' side you question maybe there's no correct side to be on. i hear a lot of people say lilith is evil look at her minions and so on, but the writers of this game confuse us by making her seem like she has a legitimate motive. at the same time, inarious portrayed as is also selfish and self-absorbing there are many confusing and conflicting things on both sides. in some ways this makes it different than a normal story and appear sophisticated, but in other ways you could argue that this just makes it easier for the writers to pivot the story into whatever they feel like...

Spoilers - I mean look at the game itself. Lilith is purposefully empowering the people of sanctuary again. In every playable area in the overworld you find lilith altars which just gives you free stats (power of the Nephilim) She was waiting for someone to oppose her, to be strong enough to (final sequence in the hazy place), but (maybe) miscalculated that we the player would not agree with her plans when confronted. Likely due to mephisto's tampering. Her return likely started beings regaining power and mephisto chose us seeing the potential to stand in her way, and put us on the path. Without his involvement I wonder what the choice would have been.
