I remember as a kid back in the late 50's catching kahawai along the rocky foreshore at Goose Bay/Oaro using my little trout spinning rod, a treble hook, a shiny washer and red wool. Caught heaps. In those days we either left them for the seagulls or gave then to day for his cray pots. We never ate them.....too may crays. Lol.

Love catching kahawai my best on a day so far is 9 on a spinner in a work up off the beach I also use bait most days
@BasicFishingNZ4 жыл бұрын
ive still yet to experience a work up off the beach with the lure

Hey man, just wondering, in terms of having success rate, is lure or bait better at catching kahawai? Thanks. And also, can kahawais see lure in the dark?
@BasicFishingNZ3 жыл бұрын
hmmm good question haha personally i think bait mainly cause i have the ability to cast far into the zone but with lure fishing you have limited distances not to mention lure size has to be considered too and hte kahawai has to b around the area in order to see it. i don't think kahawai can see in the dark but definitely can sense some movement
@joshmo43213 жыл бұрын
@@BasicFishingNZ thanks heaps for replying man. I think I agree with you too. I was thinking like, maybe cast a surfcaster out with a beach spike and use a smaller rod meanwhile to have a go with lure fishing?

thats what i did the only problem is its hard to do 2 things at once

Yeah I think ky are so underestimated aye. And they cook up quite nice. Nz are snapper snobs and that’s all they want. As a result snapper stocks are failing. Ky are more fun to catch, acrobatic, pull hard. I love catching them
@BasicFishingNZ4 жыл бұрын
would b nice to see kahawai grow big as the kingfish haha that would b an epic catch
@AdriftFishing4 жыл бұрын
I caught one once that would have been 75-80 was incredible. Would have pulled an equivalent king backwards I think. But yeah the 3 kg ones are good fun though. Like that beast I got on my kayak jumping the other week

Basic_Fishing do you like their taste? Ppl say they taste bad
@BasicFishingNZ4 жыл бұрын
i think they're good. ppl need to prepare them right if they want to get the best taste out of them: bleed them and gut them immediately to prevent the iodine tainting the flesh.

my friend kahawi is not an under rated fish its one of the most well known fish in NZ
@apocalyptik13 жыл бұрын
Yeah but with snapper, cod, kingis and the like it's not a highly rated fish compared to those. Personally kahawai is my favourite fish and even the small ones put up a good fight on a light gear
@BasicFishingNZ3 жыл бұрын
well there are some fish species that are rated as 'unappreciated' XD haha
