I can fully envision your vision of this project! If you revisit this project, consider using silicone straws, mounted and bedded in sand to hold upright then mold release and fill, cure and demold with light air pressure to make the needed mounts. Coat the "shot" with clear coat before using them in the resin.

You could try this again with the muzzle of a gun in the resin and then have the acrylic rods coming out of the muzzle with shrapnel or shot on the ends to make it look like it's being fired into water. The acrylic rods would show the path of the shot/shrapnel. Another bonus, any bubbles in the resin would just add to the underwater look.

You might try coating the pellets in clear nail polish to stop the rusting. Also, try glass rods instead of acrylic rods. If the metal pellets still rust then try black, plastic beads from the hobby shop.

Steel shot can be purchased with Zinc coating on already to help with the rusting issue. In addition instead of a block in your next attempt, try a longer taller piece that can be used as a lamp base. This way you can have the cartridge actually firing correctly with a wad 1-2" from the shell, then the shot flying out in a tight cone from the wad. Make sure you get the right used steel wad as well, they look different in the 12GA shell you have used. Don't give up and try again, it's all in the learning and research.

@@jarredladuke It may not even be what we traditionally consider 'rust', but instead a chemical reaction that yellowed the resin. For a future take, it would be worth it to do tiny experiments with various metals in resin. Lead, brass, copper, stainless steel, zinc-coated steel, etc.

I think the rust looks good. the visible rods kinda work too. just re-orient the rods and make them the path of the pellets from the shell. other than that, I would say this worked just fine. as for the blast... maybe some cellophane and a wee light inside the casing? 🤷‍♀️ cheers.

As the rods look like trails, it might have worked if you'd had the rods emerging from the shell. As for in general suspending items in resin, would it be feasible to have some kind of device that kept flipping your mold on a timer? Though it would have to be small enough to fit in the pressure pot, and you'd probably have to fiddle with the timing based on the density of what you are trying to suspend...

I liked watching this one lots. Shows you are as human as the rest of us. I wonder if you clear coated the pellets first and either did it in layers, or with the rods (like some others have said already) coming out of the shell, or putting the pellets in that slow setting resin that you were draping over things to make vases but make it more cone shaped and clear and stick the tip into the shell and pore it that way?!? I don't know

I would still be very interested in seeing it polished....I think it might actually be really cool looking. I wonder, if you try using UV resin instead of regular resin for the ball bearings when placing them on the acrylic rods, would that help keep the rust reaction down? And then use a slow cure resin instead of the quick cure to finish your project off? Don't get too discouraged Nick. Most of come here to see what you're going to create, regardless if it turns out or not, because we enjoy watching the process and being entertained and even your goofiness. Nick, this could work. Have the acrylic rods coming out of the shell casing with the shot glued on the end. The rods will then look like vapour trails. This is what I thought you were doing and then you mounted the rods at 90 degs to the direction of fire. The rust reaction I think will add to the effect. Do it man, it's a seed of a good idea. C

Same! I originally thought it was going to be like the usual trajectory of the pellets when a shot is fired. The acrylic being visible actually makes it make more sense. He could cut it in half (the entire cube), leaving the shell intact in one piece, slightly shorten the rods if needed due to the cut, but then make it so the trajectory makes sense with putting them back together with a small space of resin in between and a few pellets tossed in.

If the resin rods had been coming out of the shell all in a fanned out array I think it would have worked and seeing the rods wouldn't have been a problem I think as it would have looked more like their trail coming from the shell (like you see in slow mo). I like when people show their mistakes. But don't view it as a failure. View it as a learning experience. I've seen a few of these over the years, and they look awesome. I think 4thecraft has done one. A suggestion, use uv resin ( the type that sets instantly with a uv light) for sticking the shot to the rods. Use lead shot instead of steel, and you won't get the rust. I would say that the spread pattern of the shot, could be a bit tighter, to look more realistic. But for a first attempt, it's better than I could do. Love your content, and because of you, I'm looking at getting into woodturning if I can find somewhere local to me, to learn.

I would have used UV resin for the beads at 12:55, and the slow hardening epoxy at 15:46. One resin I would recommend you use for a project like this is Alumilite Amazing for deep pours. It takes a LONG time to cure (24 hours minimum before it starts to harden), but when it does everything turns out nice and clear (no reactions at all!). You would have been able to fill up your blank completely with that resin, even without the use of a pressure pot. It’s also great for turning on a lathe and doesn’t heat up like other epoxy resins (hence why you would have been able to completely fill up your blank all at once without any reactions).

I'm SO glad you've put out this video!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!! And I would love it if you tried it again! Just use airsoft plastic balls instead of metal ball bearings, and just in case the rods would show again: make them stick out of the... Bullet? Cuz then they will just infer even more directionality and it'll be alright ☺️

Hey Nick! I do love to see the fails as well as the successful "Funkadelic" pieces ya make. The concept sounded awesome! I was thinking...what about making layers? Do your base first and cure. Then pour a thin layer and sprinkle some pellets around and cure. Keep doing layers all the way up. I know this would be really time consuming but I'd be curious to see what a piece would look like with kind of suspended pellets throughout it. Hard to explain but maybe ya get the jest of it. LOL Love your video's...Big ((Hugs)) from Texas! xx : )

I'm one of those that likes to see the failures as much as the successes! I suggest Sealing your BB's with a layer of super glue or metal lacquer in the future (Rust-oleum maybe?), or using non-corrosive BB's like stainless ball bearings or copper BB's. Here are a few Ideas you might want to try in the future! 1) Use thickener in slow-setting epoxy clear so that you can stage small items in it without support: you can also use syringes to inject pockets of other colors of thickened epoxy in such a pour to create effects like smoke-trails. 2) pipe-cleaners and cotton balls can be shredded and glued to make thick smoke trails that also can support the BB's on their tips with some simple super glue (hot glue would created visible globs) 3) use a rectangular mold and pour this piece again vertically in numerous, tiny pours (0.5-1.0cm [Max] layers) of fast-setting epoxy in many layers, effectively "free-hand 3D printing" your art piece over the course of a week or 2. 4) Make a shallow (1cm max) mold roughly the size of a piece of printer paper (~59 x 84cm) or similar. Bisect the mold at an acute angle with a barrier, making it into a 2 chambered mold, and densely line that angled wall with BB's. Next, unmold them and cut them length-wise (I suggest a band saw) to create squared off rods of various lengths with BB's captured in the ends that you can easily arrange into a random, 3D array on a base, and marry that with a pour of the shell etc. however you like. *4B) pour a big squared plate thin and scatter BB's randomly throughout. Demold and cut into smaller square plates (mind your edges and remove half-cut BB's) stack these plates atop your cured shell pour and pour around and between them and they should disappear nicely. the arrangement might not be as pretty as with option 4 because it's more random, but it should also be faster and easier. Best of Luck! 👍😸😁

It looks like it was being shot through water. So I still think it's really cool and I hope you didn't throw it away. Make a light out of it or something. Really neat. I also LOVE that you show your failures too. You show us the ugly truth so to speak and I really appreciate a channel that doesn't "OH WOW IT CAME OUT SO GOOD" every time. That is really important to me. Thank you!

It's a starting point Nick, a base to experiment from. Try different techniques and see if you can get it to work. It's like Even and Kaitlyn say: "Make. Fail. Make. Fail. Make!" another way of saying. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

YO NICK, they actually make a tweezers specifically for picking up round BB's, pellets, etc...When I worked at Cray Supercomputers we had to place tiny, wee washers onto via pegs and we used tweezers with grooves in each side that would hold any item in place so it didn't shift. All of our tweezers, etc...were stainless, made in Switzerland but if you're interested you might want to contact a tech store that sells motherboards, pc chips, etc...they could most likely order one for you. We have a store close to me called RAM and they sell everything. They're handy for a lot of things, not just BB's, etc...Makes like a lot easier.

Nick Life doesn’t always go as planned, All we do is about trial and error, How crap it would be if everything we do went right all the time. Do not look at it as a failure 😣 Look at it as a happy mistake. A learning curve You are teaching us It’s good to see when things don’t go as planned THATS LIFE. Embrace it. 😎👍😃

You should make a taller version and use the rods from the tip of the shell. It will look as if the pellets are piercing through the resin, would look really cool. Other suggestions: 0- paint your pellets black so they won't rust and react with the resin in any way 1- pre-glue the pellets to the acrylic rods and then cut the rods to various size as needed 2- "blow" the tip of the shell open outwards so you can represent the explosion of the tip (even if it doesn"t happen that way) 3- Turn it down into an upside down "bowling pin" of sort and maybe mount it on a base of wood and metal rod (representing the shootgun) There are no failures Nick, only learning experiences. Thanks to you sharing this video I'll forever remember that acrylic rods don't always magically vanish in resin. I really hope you'll give this idea a second shot, even Babish came up with his "botched" show concept due to failures. I hope you'll try it out cause I'd love to see you push over this cliff and go for a win :) YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! :)

Forgive this comment if someone else already suggested it. But how about a slight modification. Recreate the bullet part. But instead of the rod Idea use a airsoft/BB gun to actually shoot BBs which would be similar to your shotgun pellets into semi hardened resin? If the shot creates a void then fill the individual voids with colored UV resin... And reattach the emptied bullet to give the "shot" look. Great project, sorry it didn't work out. Still interesting!

My question is this....Since the ball bearings are a dark color, could the rods be reflecting light that's being caught by bearings? I feel like the yellowed resin obviously adds to this, but I'm questioning whether or not you'd see the rods even if the resin was clear. Thoughts? Besides my silly theory, this is such a cool concept and an awesome experiment. I appreciate you showing the downfalls of projects because that IS the reality sometimes.... Anyways, I really enjoy your content!! (:

You could try drilling a bunch of tiny holes at different angles and lengths (originating from about the same spot) into a block of resin and dropping in shot pellets along with a few drops of resin. Cure. Then fill holes with resin plus an inch. Cure. Add wad and another inch of resin. Cure. At some point, fill a shell with resin and cure it. Then put it on top and fill around it. FYI... I have never worked with resin, but, I can see where you were going with this one... PLEASE TRY AGAIN?

Just use lead shot, next time( lead doesn't rust) ( but lead may melt,if the epoxy heats with the chemical reaction.I think it's cool. Experimentation is very important. In College we did a project called " blow apart".I also used a series of bullets. I've never had much luck with epoxy resins, but,I've never seen it being used( and I dont have a pressure chamber. Nice to see,I'm not the only one who has made a few boo boos..

Hey Nick! Maybe I can help? I work with resin, too and I may have some tips. Resin acts like water so pretend that you're leaving the inserts ie ball bearings in water for ages. To stop it from rusting try spraying a sealant on the inserts. I recommend Mr Super Clear Sealant, particularly the glossy finish one for this project. You could also use UV resin to make those rods. Resin may blend better with resin. It's okay to fail, especially when you're working with resin. I hope this helps! I know it can be discouraging when resin projects don't work out BUT keep at it. I look forward to your next project!

I like it and I understand what you were hoping for. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Honey. We still love ya. I wish you would do a old fashion butter churn. You can use the wood and a beautiful color epoxy resin on the outside. More and more people are making butter and cheese at home. It would look so awesome, it stands about a foot and a half off the ground. It has a lid that sits flush inside with a hole in the middle . Plus it has a rod about two and a half long, and a four arm paddle that is used to churn the butter. You go up and down and twirl around in circles. You can even look at it and see what I’m talking about . Just a suggestion Nick, I just love your shows. Be safe happy and healthy. 🌺🤗🌸❤️🌺🤗🌸❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Love the idea, Nick, BUT, I'm just gonna offer a little advice if you'll take it. If you do attempt this again, the shot from the shell PROBABLY shouldn't be behind the actual shell.... The pellets should be really close and tight when exiting the shell, and then start to spread out after.

This one is really cool and I think it was a really great idea to try. Please don’t stop experimenting. I love watching these kind of videos from you! Heck before this video, I watched one, I believe from four years ago, where you were trying to put slime in resin. I think was awesome and I absolutely loved the final product! Still can’t believe though you thought that one was a failure!? It was incredibly beautiful!! In any caves you keep experimenting and making stuff and we all will keep watching! ♥️♥️♥️ I wonder if you switch out the ball bearings for stainless steel ones if it would be more successful? I would love to see you try this again; if you already have please point me in the right direction please!! ♥️♥️♥️ 22:14

Thanks for being brave and showing your mistakes. Not to add insult to injury but er... uh... you jump right to the finished with no small-scale testing first. You could have put one tiny rod with one bullet/ball in a small sample and see exactly how it reacted. Considering the time and expense you should do small-scale tests first. Just a thought.

With resin on resin being theoretically clear, could you not have cast the block, then drilled variable-length holes and just dropped the individual shot into those, then filled it up with resin? If you were concerned with the drill trails showing, drill in the direction the shot is traveling (ie; from behind/below, not from above). If they showed at all, it’d look like matrix-style bullet trails. Just a thought. I’ve never done a single resin project though, so I could have it all wrong, lol.

I think you have done worse... Not sure why you are SO upset.... there is no one art piece that will speak to every member of the audience... so take it easy, don't be too hard on yourself.... That being said.... #1, Find someone in a Trap Shooting Club, or Skeet Shooting, or Sporting Clays, or whatever you have in the UK... find someone to explain to you how a shotgun shell works... And what it might look like, when it goes off... what you were trying to make, is nothing at all like what happens when a shotgun shell is fired.... #2 I am not sure you had "shot contamination" that discolored the resin... the shot pellets were already dunked in resin it appeared... they would have been sealed off, from the next resin pour, by the dry resin.... I would investigate that further.... Before you try again, figure out what really went wrong there. So many questions... From a completed video, highly edited, it's very hard to say what happened there... So, you were there. try to figure that out before the next attempt. #3 There are many kinds of shotgun shot, and many sizes. That looked like typical #8 shot, which is very small. Normally used for Trap or Skeet in the USA. There is a whole range of sizes. #6 would be bigger diameter shot spheres. #4 would be bigger yet. #00 buckshot, would be spheres of around .32 or so inches in diameter, very large spheres. #00 is typically used for defense or tactical military police applications. So I think it might help your project, if you had bigger shot. Shot pellets come nickel plated, plated with tin or zinc or a mixture, they come in steel, they come in lead, there are many variations on shot, and types of shot. So again, find someone who knows something about shotguns, and get some information. I think your project might look a lot better with #6 or #4 shot.... Plated would look better, and if it is determined to be shot contamination that discolored the resin, the plated shot would resist that, I have to believe.... Anyways good luck.

Your "Fails" are as fun as your successes. A couple of suggestions...first...discharge the shell so the cap is exploded, more authentic...second...nothing says you have to use the actual pellets...try beads or something similar..regardless, fun try, sorry you wasted the resin, but, nothing ventured nothing gained ...right :)
