@terryhorne2582 If you don’t like this movie, you don’t like O. Henry. I taught 9th grade English 50+ years ago, his stories were the best sources to “instill the concept of irony”. It’s a gem, and they had some great talent in front of and behind the camera. The opening credits read like a “Who’s Who” of Hollywood’s golden age.

@@sitarnut I never knew 'Night of Hunter' was directed by Laughton. What a superb and chilling film that is and how pleasing to learn that information! Bob Mitchum never gave a better performance. And wasn't Lilian Gish wonderful? And Shelley Winters...how well did she play that role? So well that she could be said to have reprised it in 1962's 'Lolita' (as the love-hungry, trusting and doomed landlady after whose daughter the wicked Humbert Humbert lusts)...

I decided to watch this because Marilyn Monroe and Anne Baxter starred in this because of their collaboration in the briliant film "All About Eve" co-starring together BUT it was Charles Laughton and Richard Widmark who really dazzled me. Charles Laughton's religious conversion soliloqy was so elegant and tragic full of pathos. Richard Widmark completely transformed himself! The low brow accent, the hyena cackling laugh and such a thoroughly mezmerizing performance! I never wanted this movie to end - never heard of it and just stumbled across this little gem.

Excellent work by Anne Baxter and Jeanne Crain. Very good work by all the other wonder actors and actresses in these great short stories. People who visit the resting place of O' Henry in Asheville, NC, sometimes leave $1.87 at his grave, which the cemetery passes onto the local library.
