I salute you sir for just shooting the video strait through with no edits. that's allot of information to remember all in one take.

Oh yeessss, great machine and documentary! 2:48 For the gear heads it might be worth pointing out that these are axial piston motors. They have higher speed and lower torque than what you need on the final drive, so we need a gear reduction. Nowadays, this reduction is done in a compact planetary (epicyclic) gear reduction, which is basically built around the motor, making for a small drive that can be tucked away neatly. (This comment has been edited to reflect Wesley's comments, sorry for getting it wrong at first :( ) The 4267psi hydraulic pressure converts to 295bar for our metric friends :)

Thanks for chiming in; love the added technical info! Thanks!

I've never seen an excavator use any radial piston motors. Axial piston pumps and axial piston motors on track drives, swing drives
@YensR7 жыл бұрын
You are right, I couldn't believe it, for years I have been certain that they use radial piston motors, because the assembly is so short, but after looking around, I see that they manage that by tucking the axial piston motor inside of the planetary reduction. Thank you for pointing that out and sorry for talking rubbish! Do you know why they don't use radial piston motors, though? However, there is at least one excavator that uses radial piston motors: www.damitz-modelltechnik.de/content/produkte/funktionsmodelle/montagesaetze/bagger/index.htm ;)

Did you/or do you work in the mining industry? and how much research do you do or have you operated these machines?
@PAmining7 жыл бұрын
Yes I work in the mining industry as a mine engineer. I always do a lot of research before I make a video like this. Thanks
@michaelalan15467 жыл бұрын
Hi, two questions. One how do you come across these awesome machines and secondly I would love to see a documentary on a large motorgrader some time. Thanks
@PAmining7 жыл бұрын
I research and locate a lot of these machines. Graders are actually not as common as you might think on Pennsylvania surface mines. Most common are 16G's

I used two of these on a mining project in Zimbabwe back in the early 80's and when working they were great machines but the maintenance was difficult. The hydraulics were way over engineered and our difficult operating conditions made it almost impossible to keep them operating.
@PAmining7 жыл бұрын
I had heard that these machines didn't use O-Rings on the hydraulic hoses and that the only way to keep them from leaking was to torque the fittings down as hard as you could?
@donsherer11027 жыл бұрын
It would take me 10 pages to just start with all the problems we had with the O&Ks but they did leak a lot. The biggest problem is that they were way over engineered and we were in a remote operating environment with little support.They never were able to function as an excavator and were used primarily to load our haul trucks.All the corporate people said they were great machines back in Germany but in Zimbabwe the Cat was the only machine up to the task.

Another great video Justin...since this machine is retired, will it eventually be scraped for steel or will it sit and be scavenged for parts.
@PAmining7 жыл бұрын
There was talk a few years back about putting it back to work, but I think that fell through when it was discovered that the engines were seized up. Sadly it will probably end up getting scrapped at some point. Thanks!
@animenut697 жыл бұрын
Couldn't they just swap in some rebuilt engines ?

Why would someone abandon that machine its got to be worth almost 10,000 in scrap alone, I know the engines are worth couple thousand a piece, there truck engines. Good video
@Jt440ex7 жыл бұрын
This machine isn't abandoned, just idled as it was no longer needed by the operation.

were american products so bad that they had to import german machinery ?
@PAmining7 жыл бұрын
At this time, European manufactures were way ahead of the American manufactures with their hydraulic technology. American manufactures were still pushing cable excavators in the industry when other manufactures were introducing hydraulic excavators. This is why brands like Demag, O&K, and Liebherr are so popular around the world today.
@cartoonfan9597 жыл бұрын
AFAIk Demag was assimilated by the Terex ( resistance was futile) , O & K was taken over by New Holland
@PAmining7 жыл бұрын
Demag was bought out by Komatsu, Terex purchased the mining division from O&K
@cartoonfan9597 жыл бұрын
ahh yes, but I remember the Demag crane division was taken over by Terex KOmatsu also bough HANOMAG , the german producer of wheel loaders regarding O & K weren't the wheel loaders sold in USA under TROJAN make ? some of them even had a red/white O&K color scheme d323w7klwy72q3.cloudfront.net/i/a/2013/20130531oktx/G5729.JPG
