Excerpt from Q&A session after Project Illumine halaqa on Surah 29: Al Ankabut: Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl discusses the issue of obedience to parents in Muslim households, emphasizing that the Islamic message should not result in authoritarian dynamics between members of the family, but rather should give the necessary space to the autonomy and creativity of individuals.

Understanding Islam would become easier for those who have been loved rightly by their parents.

I am amazed by one thing, namely, how come such wonderful insights enter the minds of only a few people and not to others. The result is that most of us make wrong decisions and live them out

Oh dear lord...the truth of this gave me straight goosebumps! He practically quoted my own thoughts back at me, it was almost surreal and very reassuring to know that I'm not alone in thinking these things. May Allah continue to bless us with the insights of Sheikh and similar people, though we pay little heed. Thank you for sharing as always

Best thing I've ever heard! I always said this, but no one believed me. Our societies are really messed up.

I would want to hear more on this topic in context of the Ayaats specifically saying that obedience to parents is an obligation for Muslims.Which in my understanding means giving their opinion consideration over any other ,unless they ask us to believe in any other God but Allah.

Does this apply to women too? Can women be free individuals having the right to live to? I recently had someone tell me Allah gave the earth to Adam, so women do not have a right to exist without a man’s permission or closeness to God… they take a vulnerability God asked to protect i to something to use.
