Great video. Would you happen to know (or guess) which preset is closest to that used as the main synth in Sasha - Xpander? He made that song as a tribute to this synth, and its the most beautiful song I've ever heard

Nastysaw lent its name and basic sound to a faculty preset in my Yamaha SY77 (1989). It’s a fun sound, maybe my favorite factory patch on that board.

THANKS!!! --great j/OB!!--lover of ALL things Oberheim (ex. the OB-12...bought it anyway, of course) However, as good as this sounds, I don't hear anything I could not get out of-or closely approximate-on my much beloved Matrix-6 , Matrix 1000, and 6-Rs? Is it really appreciably different, esp. with the astronomical price differential???

Great sounds. If only this video was around nine years ago. Back then, I had bought an MKS-80 and wanted to pair it with an Oberheim, but was scared off from Xpander / Matrix-12 due to allegations of slow envelopes unable of convincing percussive sounds (see also: JX-8P). This demo proves otherwise.

The thing with the Xpander is that used 'normally' the envelope's attack/decay is relatively slow. However, all you need to do is modify the envelope by itself which makes the envelope exponential instead of linear, and it becomes a lot faster. Still not minimoog speeds - though what is - but fast enough for a lot of uses.

The Xpander is awesome, I used to own one. But I personally think that the presets are unusable and not representative of the power of this legendary synth. With all that raw power and modulation capability, and the best the sound designers can do is copy some very basic synth sounds that every other synth has? There was nothing like this module when it came out, and very few synths that have the range. If you're a sound designer, there's modular, and then there's this monster. I mean, this beast has 5 lfos, 6 part multi-timbral, 10 or so filters (can't remember), six cv/gates in, stereo outs, etc.
