Tess Holiday makes me irrationally grit my teeth. She's another person who has made 'fat' her brand and is promoting a lifestyle choice as 'rebellious' when it's really just dangerous for 90% of the people following it. Other than being fat, Tess Holiday is a conventionally attractive woman with an hourglass figure. That's why she's been able to be so successful and why she's landed brand deals and promotions. She's been able to make enough money to offset the difficulties of being that big. She can afford nicer clothes, bigger furniture, etc...and doesn't have to try to maneuver regular life unlike the majority of her followers. She can also, presumably, afford to manage any health issues she may be experiencing. She's able to curate this image of a beautiful , happy fat woman with no weight related issues and that's just not reality.

We travelled to Singapore and throughout South East Asia for a while and it wasn't untill we got back to the UK we noticed an issue. We stood inside and asda and had this moment of "holy sh*t. Everyone is really fat." You don't notice it when no one is overweight because it's normal.
@kiddo9360

@@pingu3984 I'm from Singapore. At a very young age in secondary school, if someone is overweight, they are asked to come to school earlier than the rest for exercise routines. If you're underweight then you're given other sort of help. Some other nations around do the same. We also have cooking classes where we learn about nutrition and etc. Food sold in school also goes through certain criteria to deem it healthy. You would have also noticed that the food here has smaller portion sizes and nowhere nearly as caloric dense. We do eat out a lot but we do not indulge ourselves with things like pizzas and fast foods much. I have travelled to UK and some parts of europe. The portions sizes are huge and the most convenient thing to get is fast food. That is not the case here.
@pingu3984
@pingu3984 4 жыл бұрын
@@kiddo9360 I didn't know that bit about how schools over there deal with overweight/underweight students. Thank you for sharing. The UK doesn't have anything like that. It's now hate speech to point any any differences and "kindness" to watch people slowly die in front of you. Yes, I did notice that food portions were much smaller... And what's more is I noticed that I was still full even after eating a much smaller portion. I also agree with you that the ease of fast (high trans fat, ultra processed) food wasn't so ready available. When we did go lazy and eat "fastfood" it was still steamed rice, salmon and teriyaki with a high sugar content. Also.... Our young boys don't have the mandatory national service that yours do. I can image thay makes quite a difference.

@@kiddo9360 i know the old name for this programme is ‘taf club’. in my school, it was called the running programme. as someone who went through that programme just a few years back, what i observed is that it was only effective for a few people & even then they (usually) lost weight due to 2 reasons: 1) they were embarrassed to be in the programme (not sure whether they lost weight in a healthy manner) 2) puberty i found the criteria to qualify for that programme to be ridiculous. it was purely determined by BMI. i had a friend who was overweight by just 1kg & she had to be in the programme. i myself was probably a bit more overweight, but i think i was less than 5kg overweight. i’m a female too. i won’t type my entire journey here as it’s way too long, but puberty helped me. i was lucky enough to be of acceptable weight in secondary 3 & didn’t have to be in the programme anymore! i didn’t do much, i just happened to stop craving snacks towards the end of my secondary 2 days. i wish this happens to me again. although i didn’t care about being in the programme in secondary 1 & 2, i was desperate not to become overweight in secondary 3 & 4. the irony! one of my main reasons was so that i wouldn’t have to be back in the programme, but that’s a whole other story. my rant probably doesn’t make much sense, but i feel that the programme only managed to pressure a few students into losing weight. i guess in singapore, people aren’t bullied as much for being overweight, so a lot of the students just couldn’t care less about losing weight. although, it definitely influenced us to have an unhealthy mindset when it comes to health & weight loss. i’m 20 & my weight still fluctuates. it sucks. there was only one nutrition talk & all we did was just running! isn’t weight loss 80% diet & 20% exercise? yes, exercise is important but i felt that the school should’ve emphasised on what we ate too! the only improvement they did was that they separated the overweight & severely overweight students when i was in secondary 2. the overweight students (including me), continued with running. the severely overweight students went to the gym instead. sorry for the really long rant, i just never really had the opportunity to complain about this programme. these are just my really strong opinions, maybe i was affected by the programme more than the majority. i only knew of 1 male classmate that got pressured to lose weight & i saw how the same happened to that friend of mine.

I’m glad that you brought up that Tess has a nice shape even if it’s obese because it brings up another hypocritical point to her “F*** Your Beauty Standard(s)” philosophy: for as much as she preaches that she doesn’t want to conform to society’s beauty standards, she sure is good at maintaining a relatively hourglass figure! Just because it’s larger than what society is used to, doesn’t mean it doesn’t conform to the beauty standard. I guarantee that she would _never_ allow her tummy to surpass her bust, or her waistline to exceed her hips. That’s why it’s okay for _her_ to work out, “but don’t feel like _you_ need to.... My mom does this all the time when we video call or we meet. She tells me what she ate and says to me "look at me, im fat and i barely ate" then she asks my stepdad to confirm it. But we both know its not true. She does have hormonal issues that makes her emotions go haywire and eat more than necessary. But I dunno why she even tells this to me, I never point out her weight and I never even talk about any eating related thing with her... so I am always just confused what she wants me to say... and when we meet in person and she sees im normal sized now, she always pressures me about eating more and says I look like a skeleton and no one will like me. I aint no skeleton, I am 5,7 around 170 lbs. Its just thin, compared to the rest of my family.

Morbidly obese people DO usually sit around all day because they’ve rendered themselves immobile so there’s that. Tess’ overt hostility and defensiveness however is all the evidence you need that she’s not actually cool with being obese except she’s stuck because her entire livelihood depends on staying freak level fat. Tess isn’t necessarily overeating NOW tho she might just be maintaining therefore eating a proper amount. Tess has become her fat tho because there is no discernible personality shown beyond being angry about fat-talk. WHO would Tess be if she wasn’t obese?

Morbidly obese people generally sit around all day because they don't *want* to move and their bodies don't exactly make it rewarding, but it takes extremes for it to actually be impossible. My parents are 450lbs+ (5'4 and 5'10) and they can do more than my disabled body when they want to, that when is just extremely rare. I walk 10k+ steps a day, cycle daily as well, lift 1h a day with 1-2 rest days a week depending on the program and do all the good stuff like stretches, balance, dedicated cardio etc. After 2 years I've nearly closed the gap but I can, at best, hike faster and longer than they can, everything else, we're pretty much equal. For now... Also Tess doesn't appear too much of an exception though it might be the HAES exposure I get through my mother. Her livelihood depends on it, yes, but so many 'curvy women' (just quoting them) make their size and food their identity and then claim it's 'just enjoying life.' As if it's impossible to enjoy life whilst eating balanced and working out, where-as most people I know that work out do it because they love the process, results are just a bonus.

CW: ED talk I'mma keep it super real. I've dealt with restrictive ED my whole life, and later with the addition of binging. I had some serious control issues, and body dysmorphia is a freaking bitch. I currently weigh 270. I've been in physical therapy for degenerative connective tissue problems for almost two years. I was 180 when I started. Before that, I'd had a hysterectomy, and been on a boatload of pain and psych meds that messed up my metabolism, potentially beyond repair. But I'm still working with a dietician, checking in with my primary care doctor. My blood pressure is 120/80 so long as my pain is managed. I eat properly, at a mild-to-moderate deficit. My physical therapist and pain management doctor are telling me to stop focusing on the scale, and to focus on my mobility. And Tess Holliday hurts my situation. Because she doesn't accept that being overweight is bad. She sits there blaming everyone else for making the conversation about weight, when she won't stop talking about how great it is to be fat. My weight makes my life harder, but it can't be my focus. But when people make that the argument, rather than "listen to the healthcare professionals who give a damn," it hurts the people who are already suffering. It took me years to be heard, in the medical system, but the wrong kind of bickering only made it take longer. You, however, give me hope.. You see the nuance, and accept that there is sometimes more to the story. You often talk about the humanity behind a lot of the stories, and I love that. Sorry for the novel-length rant, but I had a lot of feelings to get out there, I suppose lol

Healthy weight is a range for a good reason. And its a big range - a range of 50lbs for an average 5'5 woman. It reflects the fact that science understands that people come in different shapes, sizes and body compositions. Not everyone will be naturally super lean, just like not everyone is genetically predisposed to building and holding muscle. But, as John pointed out, the idea that a person, particularly a small female who claims to be otherwise healthy, gets to 350+ lbs without some very serious eating, is ridiculous. At that weight, her Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is over 2000 calories *without exercise*. With a little basic activity, it's up to 3000. With deliberate exercise, it's almost 3500. If she's as active as she claims, she's eating *at least* that much per day to maintain her weight. That's a whopping 35 average-sized bananas...Freelee must be so proud...

It starts with the people writing in a journal what they ate for a week and then they're watched for a few days and every bite is counted. At the end, the calories they thought they consumed was compared to what they actually ate.

I don’t have anything against overweight people, as I was overweight after having my first child and stayed overweight for about 5 years... That being said, I think we should have some type of help for overweight people especially if they are publicly overeating/ under eating and eating stuff that is dangerous for their health. If someone is a danger to themselves or others, they are taken to get help. I feel that people with eating disorders do pose as a danger to themselves and to those around them. We see people that suffer from anorexia or bulimia get medical help and in extreme cases they can be admitted to a hospital against their will because these disorders are considered self harm. I believe that obesity should also be viewed as self harm. Public criticism and put downs do nothing to help people overcome an eating disorder but exasperates the issue and causes an escalation of the eating disorders. Overeating, or under eating, binging and purging (any eating disorder) pose danger to those who have these eating disorders and also those who follow those who promote eating disorders. Overeating and eating unhealthy food in large quantities is an eating disorder the same as under eating disorders. There are nutritional guidelines for a healthy body and anything far outside those guidelines can be considered an eating disorder. Extremes are dangerous.

I want to preference this by saying I was a part or at least a devout of "Fat positive" movement at the time. Also want to add that Tess is gorgeous; like she's really that beautiful in person. After meeting her and few other fat positive leaders, I became very disenchanted with the movement. The sheer eliteness (not sure if that's even a word) and high school clique vibe of this group was unreal. For a group that claims it so inclusive, they are definitely not the nicest group of people.

Truthfully as a plus size woman. I like it only.... on smaller frames.

The best way to pop a morbidly obese person's bubble is to ask them to tie their shoes on camera. Then, ask how healthy does it feel. That shit would snap you back to reality real quick! Been there and its not fun.

I joked with my husband that I would leave him right away if Thor came and told me that he’d wanted me, and my husband went, “that would honestly hurt me so much, because why didn’t he choose me instead?” 😂

Is it sad I know the "I need it" spongebob episode is called tea at the tree dome and the third episode on the VHS because there was 2 episodes including the "anchovies" episode that didn't air first on tv.

I used to binge eating (i see myself eating one cookie watching TV, then i turned of TV and see the family size cookie bag empty in front of me BUT somehow, eventhough i was feeling ashamed and tried to hide the dead body from my relatives everytime, i kept saying i don't eat too much). I was a obese teen (i ate when i felt down, i ate when i felt proud, so i ate all the time.). To me, being obese was similar to a curse, something unfair that happens to you for no reason. Then, my nutritionnist asked me to write down everything that i've eaten each day in a notebook for 2 weeks. I lied and she knew. She looked at me and said : "I think we should stop there cause there is no point here. You are not ready and not willing enough to change. You are not going to lose one pound, so save your money." It was harsh to hear but TRUE. So i stopped lying to myself and finally started to take care of my health. She teached me how to eat properly and i discovered that i was not fat (= i'm not born or build fat). Obesity is not an ethnicity or a personal trait. It's a disease that can be cured. Tess is a beautiful woman, her weight has nothing to do with her beauty.

@JoKenTin A'TIN the green symbol after someone’s user name is from the paid channel subscription. If by chance you’re simply referring to the smiley faces & other pics/ symbols people add w/ in their comments they’re free for anyone to add simply via keyboard options on any phone or tablet; there are ways to add them if on a computer but it’s a bit more of a process.
