For me, this episode was a massive win. It portrayed Vader exactly how he should be, and how he is in the games and comics. It showed the beautiful training with Anakin and Obi-Wan and tied it into how each of them felt later on now in present day. It was magnificent. I really enjoyed this episode.
we start this episode off on coruscant, where anakin and obi wan are training together.
I loved how Kenobi tells them Vader is coming and he won’t stop for pleasantries or to be patient, when they ask how does he know, we get a flashback of Anakin and Obi-Wan’s fighting continued. This is amazing as it shows the lessons Obi-Wan was teaching Anakin which could have saved his life in their duel had he actually listened to them. Kenobi tells him that he grows too aggressive, a jedi’s goal is to defend life, not take it. This really shows some red flags with anakin and it does so perfectly. Portraying Anakin as the aggressor, which falls perfectly in line with his style of fighting, form 5 djem so, the offensive form. Whereas Obi-wan’s is soresu, form 3.
He realizes that the only way Reva can know that Vader is Anakin is if she was a youngling at the Jedi temple during order 66. He tells her Anakin killed younglings, and she has a flashback. She tells him that the younglings thought he was there to help them and that she hid with the bodies of her youngling friends. Kenobi realizes she isn’t serving Vader, but rather hunting him, to get closer to him. The rank of Grand Inquisitor grants the GI to be closer to Vader on dangerous missions, meaning more chances for Reva to fight or blind side Vader. Her anger with Kenobi is revealed as we learn she hates him to failing Anakin, and causing him to execute Order 66 on the Jedi. Blaming Obi-Wan for what happened to the galaxy and her friends.
Kenobi realizes he’s beaten, as we get another flashback of Anakin getting the upper hand on Obi-Wan. He strikes down on Obi-Wan who is cornered and defending himself down on a knee. This same angle mimics Luke attacking Vader in the same way in Return of the Jedi. the only difference is Anakin keeps attacking whereas Luke stops himself. Showing the difference between father and son. I also want to note that this choreography is very similar if not identical to their duel on Mustafar as they go through the tight walls into the control room.
The flashback shows Anakin using his iconic behind the back move as he moves as swiftly as he did. Hayden doesn’t miss a beat after 17 years and continues to be a great swordsman with Ewan. He disarms obi-wan and learns a powerful lesson foreshadowing his loss on Mustafar.
As they ready to leave, Vader breaks through the doors and sees the ship taking off as he controls it with the force. This scene was the most badass scene I’ve seen with Disney’s Star Wars. This was straight out of force unleashed where starkiller was controlling the star destroyer, it echoed a lot of that scene. As he drops the ship down, he tears it apart with the powers of the dark side only to see the emergency shuttle escape and blast off into space, too fast for Vader to grab a hold of it.
The flashback concludes with Obi-Wan taking Anakin’s lightsaber with the force and telling him that he’s a great warrior, but his need to prove himself is his undoing. Until then, a padawan you will still be. As it shows Anakin’s immense disappointment in himself. As we get a shot from Anakin to Vader, showing exactly how he feels in this moment.
As Reva tries to take him out from behind, he senses it and freezes her with the force, just like Fallen Order when he fought the second sister and Cal Kestis. He toys with her, completely making her look like a joke as he doesn’t even bother to use his lightsaber, as she’s not worthy of him using it. Vader just uses the force until he takes hers and splits it in two, throwing the other half to her feet. Besting her in lightsaber combat without even putting any effort into it. As she drops her to her knees he summons both sabers and for a moment I thought he was going to end her like how Anakin Skywalker did to Dooku, however he didn’t do that. He stood over her and plunged the saber into her, just as Anakin plunged it into her as a youngling. Now I watched this scene over and over again to confirm that he did indeed stab young Reva. We see her as a youngling make a face of pain as Anakin plunges it only to be connected to Vader finishing the movement. The first person POV of her keeling over dizzy as Anakin stands over her, is enough for me to believe the way this was shot and directed, is to imply that she was indeed stabbed as a youngling, just not fatally. Vader tells her that he knew all along that she was the youngling.

I do believe reeva will go capture luke and inform him about the force and how it effects ppl negatively and how his birth father becomes a sith and how obi wan failed him and to steer clear of becoming a jedi which makes luke more curious about his birth father and more curious about becoming a jedi like in the 4th movie a new hope or she might attempt to kill him to exact revenge on obi wan for failing anikan or to exact revenge vader for killing the younglings which is unlikely bcs vader doesnt know about his kids yet

We gotta remember that Anakin was a padawan and knight throughout the clone wars. he was trained during an era of soldiers not during an era of peacekeepers, like the counsel was. I think the placement of Obi-Wan's line "until then, a padawan you will still be" could show that Vader is still not quite past his hotheadedness, and is going to lose his fight in the finale because he still hasn't learned his lesson. That would tie in with the line from A New Hope pretty nicely, as Vader is still the learner and will need to learn one final lesson in his duel next week to become the master.

IMO, great duel but not needed for Learner/Master thing, actually they should've put this epic duel before the ep.5 events. He learned his final lesson in EP.5 when gets tricked and defeated not physically, but mentally again by Obi-Wan and for that surprise defeat, he *lefts* him. Just a minute later, he effortessly plays with Reva, not just straight murdering her like he normally do. He thinks similiar like Kenobi and I think this completes his Learner/Master story arc.

The duel between reva and vader was amazing! It truly shows that anakin is still there behind that suit! Or at least the same vader in revenge of the sith. How he has a lightsaber on his side but simply choosing to show off by throwing her around with the force instead. And once he turns the fight into a 1 vs 1 you can tell that he is not even trying. Just showing how little effort he needs to beat her and how ultimately weak she is compared to him. The whole thing feels like a bridge between anakin/vader from rots and vader from the empire strikes back! I know it’s different from earlier canon and legends but I think it’s a good bridge! The only thing that I would say is that if they wanted this kind of vader then the show should have taken place sooner like 3 or 5 years after instead of 10. like before fallen order. I didn’t mind Anakin and Obi-Wan looking a bit older in the flashbacks. I can picture them both from episode 2 because the movies are ingrained in memory, so I can tell the difference. I absolutely love how they portrayed Vader's fighting style in this episode. It is so accurate. Because of his suit, Vader is not as flexible as he once was, which limits his abilities to fight with his lightsaber. So what does he do? @@Stuwi I disagree with the idea that past episodes were garbage on a couple of levels. 1. If we didn’t see Kenobi at at his lowest and going through his rust and self loathing and learning to live with his mistakes instead of “forgetting” or letting them control him… the episode would be less impactful. Seeing him cower and hide and run from Vader in the first meeting was important. 2. We now see and understand why Reva’s character was so hated by the rest of the inquisitors and how she knew Anakin was Vader. The “Oh Shit you were there” moment between her and Kenobi was awesome… as was Vader revealing he remembered her. 3. I actually enjoyed learning about the new empire control. I get some fans wanted only Anakin and Obi Wan… but that’s extremely limited in terms of story telling. We got to see Obi Wan go through his trauma, regain hope and even platonic love through Leia… I think each episode had a theme or overarching point. Did some of them drag on a bit to get there? sure. Is Leia the world’s fastest child? Apparently. I enjoyed them though. My biggest complaint is I wish it had all just been released at once.

The episode was so rewarding because the show took its time to develop the characters and story to build up to the moment. Too many diehard nerds wanted to get the cake before the meat. They complained Kenobi was disillusioned, weak and not himself. Well of course not after what he went through, and he was trying to stay hidden under the radar. He’s not going to be a well oiled Jedi. And he didn’t know Vader was alive. There was nothing in ROTS to indicate he would. What he said in the original trilogy was with the knowledge he’s gaining now. That whole outrage was stupid. Hating on 3rd Sister was premature. We were supposed to hate her. We weren’t supposed to have sympathy or anything toward her - that’s what they saved this episode for. I don’t understand why everyone wants everything from the first or even first few episodes. The great payoff is what’s missing in a lot of shows and movies today because annoying audiences don’t have the patience for it. They’re a spoiled on instant gratification Marvel style. That’s why we got Super Rey in Force Awakens. End of rant.

I just want to add, tho she can be annoying, that is actually a really good sign for the job of the actress of hers, Moses Ingram. The ability to bring emotions to people is the sign of a good job on part of the actor or actress, just like with Jack Gleeson in Game of Thrones, only through his amazing job was Joffrey so hateable. That being sad, i do agree that Reva is no written amazingly, but she now she does have a very understandable motivation und way to feel the way she feels. These thoughts of Obi Wan failing the whole Jedi Order and being responsible for the death of her adopted family not only does hold quite the weight, she had over ten years festering in these thoughts and hatred every time she closed her eyes and probably a very big portion of her waking hours too. And she would have seen or heard about Vader probably quite frequently, so to be confronted again and again and again with your tormentor, that will only have fueled that fire. I quite like her as more of a tragic villain, i did not hate her before, but this background does very much for me elevate her until then somewhat lackluster motivation.

How is she not written well? She is written fine alot better than some other characters In star wars. People literally just hate her to hate her and give lame surface level reasons as to why. First they said she was too evil as an inquisitor (which is fucking retarded because inquisitors ARE EVIL") next they are saying she doesn't show emotion which is dumb because yeah she does shes a good actress. It felt fan servicey. I don't know about you, but I had an easy time predicting many of the plot points of this episode, at least 5-10 minutes before they happen. It felt really cookie cutter. As soon as the creators are concerned about the meaningless details of the escape, it focuses on the wrong aspects of Star Wars. The Leia part of the escape felt very Disneyfied once again. Kenobi was really out of place for a lot of the episode. In one scene, he's holding his saber to protect all the civilians. In the next scene, he's running ahead of everyone, and it gets Cpt. Tala and the droid killed. Cpt. Tala's death felt so unimportant she wasn't really even a strong character besides to progress the plot conveniently. We don't really connect with her much. Reva could have sliced open the doors with her saber when they began sieging the front door to their hideout instead of shooting it with a giant cannon that does nothing. I don't know. This episode was entirely uncreative. Vader could have gone down there, torn the whole place apart, and massacred everyone again like Rogue One. For some reason, he sends the new "Grand Inquisitor," whom I doubt he trusts, given that we understand at the end of the episode that he knows Reva was from the temple.

It would have been good if they'd been able to de-age Hayden better since, while he still looks and moves very well, facially he does show some aging. It doesn't spoil anything for me, though. I love these flashbacks!
