LIMITED EDITION
Ahsoka Episode 1 is here and with it, my breakdown! A lot happened in this episode and I have to say beyond Ahsoka Tano, I am really interested in Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati as they navigate their way through the story with Morgan Elsbeth to find Thrawn (and Ezra). I really think they are interesting characters who survived Order 66 and I'm eager to learn more about them (and just how much Baylan knew about Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader)
Awesome seeing Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla and Chopper..and of course...Huyang!

I really like how they’re writing the two Jedi. When the master said it would be a shame to kill Ashoka since there are so few Jedi left it gave such an interesting dynamic to his character.

Yeah. He is actually interesting. It's clear he wants power, but he's really not just a sith. He doesn't want to destroy the Jedi or their ways but he has a goal. Perhaps he wants to create conflict that facilitates the need for the Force to become more prominent.

I agree. But I also like how we get to see how much like Anakin and Ahsoka really are. He called her Snips for a reason. I got to say the scene with the two dark Jedi on the ship was probably some of the most disciplined use of the force in combat we've seen on screen. They both moved so precisely and rigidly while staring forward emotionless towards their goal. Especially how skol so effortlessly use the force and lightsaber in the hallway and when he freed elspeth. It clearly seemed as if it was so easy for them that they didn't need to use any effort yet still put focus and attention into what they were doing. Clearly very confident in their abilities and justifiably so

This show is really nicely made, every time Ashoka appears, and especially when she fights, I think to myself “ this woman was directly trained by Anakin himself” , she is such a special character in that respect. Unfortunately, I had never seen Rebels. I just started and am 10 minutes into the first episode. I have no idea about who Ezra is and who the characters are. Ashoka may have revitalized Stars Wars in more ways than one since it got me (and maybe many more) to finally sit down and watch Rebels.

Don't forget, it's not just that Sabine is being 'a rebel' in avoiding the ceremony. While to everyone else it's the anniversary of Lothal's liberation, to her it's the anniversary of when her best friend sacrificed himself. To the population of Lothal it's a celebration, to her it's almost a wake. Sure she tries to hide it behind a veneer of punk attitude, but going back to Ezra's old place, watching the holo, even feeding the Lolth cat all show her wanting to surround herself with things that remind her of Ezra. There's proper subtext being used here.

Can’t people remember Cal Kestis was stabbed with a lightsaber in his side kind of like Sabine? Unlike Qui-Gon who was stabbed in his stomach which is fatal and went out through his spinal cord which is ALSO fatal, Sabine got stabbed in the liver area which can regenerate over time + was given immediate medical attention upon Ahsoka’s arrival. At LEAST Sabine getting stabbed here has a pretty decent enough reason this time. Not like Reva, Grand Inquisitor, etc etc. I’m okay with this one this time. But I do agree that Star Wars characters do need to stop getting stabbed in a fatal area and surviving. Reva surviving as a Youngling is pathetic and even as an Inquisitor it was pathetic because she actually got stabbed in a fatal area. Just my thoughts though. I’ll let this one slide because well it has an actual reason.

Starting from surviving "Order 66", finding and training shin, to how he became a dark Jedi. Chopper had more energy, but Chopper is Chopper lmao With Kathleen Kennedy still on board I highly doubt if Luke will appear even though this is his time in the galaxy to thrive. Kinda hope to see Ezra for more than one episode, a cameo of Freddy Prinze Jr as a Force Ghost Kanaan would also be cool, but there will be Anakin so that's probably out too. I love that Ahsoka has a ton of unresolved issues with Anakin. It would definitely explain why she wouldn't dare go anywhere NEAR the rebels during the time of the original trilogy. Let's not forget she had her own face to face with Darth Vader; once in the Force when she and Ezra and Kanan all reached out to find out who the Sith Lord was, and again in person. And she could. Not. COPE with who Anakin had become. And it seems, after all this time, she still can't. We all work through our grief and trauma in our own ways. Some throw themselves into their work, others become secluded and isolated. Seems like Ahsoka decided to be the latter. And that isn't entirely out of character for her either; in the time she was still on Coruscant, she never ONCE contacted Anakin despite having that mental bond that all Jedi have. In fact when Anakin sensed her as she and the sisters left the planet, she seemed a bit perturbed by him connecting to her. Hoping he wouldn't say anything. And when she reunited with him, she was all business, trying to maintain that distance between them. It doesn't seem fair to Anakin, as he was the only one who stood beside her when the Council had turned their backs, but again, we learn from others. And Anakin closed off his emotions a LOT until they boiled over. Ahsoka is the better version of Anakin, in some ways, but in others, she is exactly like her master.

I think its off to a really good start. The nostalgic elements are well-executed, keeping the classic Star Wars atmosphere we love. The dynamics between characters have depth. Especially enjoyed Baylen's consideration for the scarcity of Jedi, very enjoyable when villains have likeable qualities. Sabine getting stabbed is a bit of a miss in my eyes but it's placed there to act as a serious catalyst for continuing training. Dave Filoni is in tune with the star wars community and this series is in safe hands.

I'm loving the Darth Maul parallel seen in Shin Hati. She's a very pleasant surprise. So bad ass, has a crazy look in her eye, and doesn't run her mouth. She serves her master and does all the bidding he asks. I wonder if she begins to question their moves later on, she seems like she doesn't trust Elsbeth for good reason. The characters outside of Ahsoka, Baylen, and Sabine seem to not run their mouths and clutter the show with dialogue, which is an issue the other shows had. This is so much cleaner. Sabine as a jedi, I'm fully on board. Everyone has the force in an around them and few can wield it. It's quite obvious that Sabine can't use the force for traditional non-combat things, but she can hold her own with a lightsaber (Which Kanan trained her extensively in.). And her getting smoked by Shin Hati who was obviously feeling her out and not trying, the show maintains the realism that you can't just pick up a sabre and win a duel, even with training. Sabine feels different and it will take some time to get used to her. And she didn't get stabbed in the stomach. It was her side so it was non lethal. Now, for the biggest head scratcher and surprise. I wonder if the other galaxy is the galaxy of the Yuuzhan Vong. I know Dave would, and could pull it off, but I don't know if Disney would be that bold. BUT, they are pretty desperate right now with their financial losses so IDK. 0:57 I was watching this episode with my parents, and it was at this moment when I realized that we had not yet seen this arc of the Clone Wars (we had previously gotten a fair ways through that season, but hadn’t yet seen those episodes), so we immediately had to backtrack and watch the whole thing before we started this one so as not to be spoiled

Indeed, i sat with a smile through most of both episodes. Ahsoka fighting those droids at the beginning was amazing 🤩

Nice to get back to that old school star wars feel, but naturally mixing in some new school. Dave Filoni obviously understands the material and has respect for the fans. May the force be with us all.

Is anybody else annoyed by the stop motion creatures? I feel like they are pandering to somebody that does exist. Is anybody grateful that they intentionally make stuttery CGI? Just curious? Prove me wrong.

@@clanpsi Agreed. The first two episodes might not be Book of Boba Fett bad but they were boring and creatively bankrupt and fell back on previously used plot tropes that (finding star maps) that have already been used to death in Disney Star Wars. There is no way that Lucas himself wouldn't hate the first two episodes.

i think the only thing i wish is that we had more context to Sabine and Ahsokas relationship as master and apprentice. We see Sabine retrieve lightsaber training from Kanan, and then we are just told now that she was in training by ahsoka after rebels. I think this is a perfectly fine development but it does feel like we are missing a season of story when you think of this as just the next season of rebels, just wish we had a book or a comic detailing more of this, cause the state that Ahsoka walked away from being a master and abandoned Sabines training, but ep2 she is calling her padawan, that part feels a bit rushed and would probably feel better with more context. Overall though im super excited, i think it is probably going to be very important Ahsokas story to be a master, to be in Anakins shoes to some degree.

I thought the character was fine in rebels the way she was. I guess they added the lightsabre training bit because they needed a rival for Shin.

I like this review. But I also like it's bad faith counterpart by Disparu, which has a widely different perspective. Interestingly enough I think both raise a lot of fair points. I'm fairly confident (based on what I've heard) That this could have been a lot better. Though it at least sounds like its decent, which is great by Disney SW Standards
