A Rescore/Re-edit of Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader by A.B.Director.
With Darth Vader on his trail and obsessed with revenge, Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi decides to finally face his old apprentice once again.
The final battle from the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series, rescored and re-edited with John Williams' iconic music from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. The fight has been re-arranged to play as a single sequence without any interruptions, including some dialogue cuts and pauses (such as Vader trapping Obi-Wan underground and leaving him for dead). The sound design has also been re-edited and re-mixed extensively.
The scene has also been re-color-graded.

Y'know what, I saw people shitting on this fight but in my mind the point wasn't to "nerf" Vader or make him look weak, it was to show that restraint, technique and Obi-Wan's ability to keep his emotions balanced is superior to Vader's sheer aggression. Loved the scene and honestly the rescoring and colour grading was cinema-grade. Fantastic job!!!

The color grading is fantastic and Duel of the Fates surprisingly worked. However, Battle of the Heroes misplacement distracted me. It belongs in the more epic Episode 3 fight and it’s inclusion here shows how odd it is paced with this fight. Obi-Wan and Vader are not their younger selves. In general, I am in the minority when it comes to not including Duel of the fates or other previous epic music for this fight. I do agree that what we got in the actual show isn’t the best but using scores made for other duels just doesn’t work either lol. When I hear those scores I attribute it to the duels they were made for, so it’s hard to connect it to this one if that makes sense. But that’s just me. Either way, great job overall!

given how all the comments seem to love this, I'm gonna give a controversial opinion and say this music, while awesome in it's own right, kind of ruins the feel of this fight... this fight was really dark and kind of tragic, and anakin's screams of frustration and helplessness as he's beaten by obi wan again, yet this time outright overpowered, were complimented pretty well by the more tragic/sad music and lighting it originally had.

It’s because Disney thinks they know better than 40 years of special FX experts and they use “real” lightsabers, essentially the $20 electronic plastic ones you get from the store because “the lighting effects look more authentic” ya except for the fact it looks like when my brother and I would turn off the lights in our basement and play with our lightsabers. You can’t see shit and it fucks with the ability to do good fight choreography like in the prequels.

Really liked how the color grading made this scene look! The brighter tone made it feel much better from the darkness originally. The lightsabers are slightly desaturated but thats honestly for the better cause it makes then shine much better in the dark. Also, I really liked how you were able to seamlessy cut the battle down by moving shots closer (like how instead of having Obi-Wan and Vader do the back-on-back hits you instead opted to immediately cut towards when Obi-Wan grabbed Vader's wrist and move him) Its a really good way to shorten the fight and It works really seamlessly! Also, Duel of the Fates with Battle of the Heroes is always a win so great music choice there too. Noticed you also resounded it and the extra impact sounds definitely make it feel more of a duel than before. Still definitely don't like shaky cam but thats not something that can be fixed without warping. Great job!

@hophoppington-hoppenhiemer2016

Part of that reason is the new lightsaber props. In TFA, the behind the scenes show they basically use an actual prop saber, like SaberForge or something, so that the actors have the lighting on their body. It kind of makes sense. The characters can see the color, the blade is a glowing with light. Why isn't the color coming off of it? Cuz they didn't think of that allot in the older production films. The actual choreography and dialogue and effects in other places took priority, plus as everyone clearly feels, it does visually get in the way.
@cass7448
@cass7448 2 жыл бұрын

@@cass7448 Yeah, but the grade fucked it up and I think the LED's are way to intense for "natural" light. I mean if it were a real lightsaber we couldn't see shit, so its definetely not real, but if it didn't look so compressed and blown it would look way less, like a fan-film.

I also don't like the fact that they spark so much . That would be a flaw lightsaber craftsman would've fixed immediately because of the risk of a Jedi or sith weapon sparking them in the face in combat . Seems to be a thing Disney started with the new trilogy and ran with.

The color grading looks fantastic. I'm not sure why Peak TV has decided everything needs to be too dark to see now, but it's getting in the way of some good fight choreography. That being said, I think Natalie Holt's existing score works for this scene. There are choral elements, and the Obi-Wan theme composed by Williams swells as Kenobi finally gets his mojo back. I worry the SW fandom is too attached to certain musical cues and is unwilling to even listen to new stuff, which really shortchanges the hard work that went into the score for this show. I also think Duel of the Fates is more of a "spectacle" piece and doesn't really fit with the more personal nature of the duel (though you've cut out Obi-Wan's character beat in the middle, which also kind of undercuts the sequence). It conveys tone, but not the nuance of the moment.
@OxlanderArt
@OxlanderArt 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. Initially I liked the dark color grading of the original fight, and I feel this to be a tad bright + desaturated. However the darkness of the original definitely focuses more on the lightsabers moving rather than some of the really good choreography that I got to appreciate more here. And nothing to add on what you said about the music, I completely agree. Duel of the Fates is great but Star Wars should be allowed to keep changing and Natalie Holt's score fit perfectly.

I was about to post a response quite like this, but repetition. As much as I love "Duel of the Fates" and the "Battle of Heroes," those times are over. Thematically, it doesn't make sense for this fight. I remember, as an OT guy, cringing at the PT music simply because it was new. These days, I try to set my prejudice aside and just appreciate the scores as best I can and give them time to gain meaning within my personal love of Star Wars. Lighting? Yes. I mostly agree, but could have been a few shades darker, or at least for some scenes. I did see what they were trying to do there with the original darker lighting. Which was to cover up their shody craftsmanship. The mediocre CGI and at times "very obviously a set." Needs darker lighting and shadows to hide the obvious detail. The brighter lighting of this edit exposes that in a few scenes. ( 2:35-3:05 ) A few shades darker and it would have looked a little more natural. Small nitpick, and still Disney's fault.

The reason why Vader is standing there (at least my opinion) is because when Obi-Wan starts hitting his control panel you see some sparks come out, and also seeing Vaders stance while this is happening, it's quite possible he's either getting a bit electrocuted or some of his body stops functioning. Also, during this time that Obi-Wan is hitting his panel the thing that helps Vader breathe goes out out a bit. That's why when it comes back on, you hear a gasp from Vader and he's mobile again

You can most certainly blame the production team that was hired to do Kenobi. They botched this show. Judging by the Andor teaser, it already looks 100% better with the cinematography, in fact that same director who did the acclaimed Rogue One is literally doing that Disney+ show. So, half the time I wouldn't say it's Disney's fault, but more so that actual people that should be blamed.

I just now noticed before obiwan bombards him with rocks he only gets the true upper hand on Vader once he uses Anakin's old "Hayden spinning attack" on him twice. It just goes to show how much Vader knew obi wans technique so well that the master has to use his old apprentice's signature move to best him... Tragic when you realize at this point he still didn't know Vader was Anakin.

This fight is so good. But I still cannot accept that Vader would lose to Obi-Wan after 10 years in the suit and Kenobi aging/being out of practice. Yes, he rekindled his connection to the force. But to me, it smells a little like Rey pulling force powers out of her ass to defeat the villain. Obviously on a much smaller scale than the travesty that is Rey as a character, but him being at full strength all of a sudden after recently having half of his body BURNED and not touching his lightsaber in god knows how long does not feel justified.

I think this re-mounted fight alone solves a lot of the problems I have with the show, the lingering dissatisfaction. So far as I am concerned *this* is the canon version, this is what _really_ happened. It also connects much better with the flash-back training duel between Obi-wan and Anakin from happier times. As warned, Anakin has come to rely too heavily on his affinity with the force whereas ultimately Obi-wan beats him with pure skill--much as he did on Mustafar. All of that was obviously present from the start, but somehow the editor managed to completely obscure and muddy up the excellent work that McGregor and Christensen, along with their doubles (not to mention the FX coordinators!) put into this scene. In fact, now we can properly see it the confrontation almost perfectly showcases the differentiation between Light and Dark. Anakin hurls objects off into the distance and strikes with heavy, constant rage while Obi-wan evades and beats as necessary before deftly parrying. Is there a known order of which styles they are employing here? Obi-wan usually defends to the very last, but if anything he appears to use constant pin-point strikes with the last quarter of the blade--much more like Dooku than anyone. Has he given up Soresu? Absolutely brilliant work! Whether or not Obi-wan should have--yet again--finished Anakin... I don't know. It would have denied Luke his catharsis and Anakin his (unearned) redemption, but also saved a lot of people that Luke could have used in the New Jedi Order.

I love how the show finally showed us just how powerful in the Force Obi-Wan really was. I appreciate this version as it is an improvement. I still absolutely hate their shakey camera footage. it's messy and amateurish, and I hate, hate, hate, hate, the top down shot where the shot twirls aimlessly like it's being held by a string. You can tell that none of the camera movement was done on the day of filming but added later in post, and that circling top down shot has no rhyme or reason to it's movement. The DP or director, or who ever thought those shots looked good should be sent back to school before ever being allowed near a camera again.

This duel was shit, and Darth Vader should have kept his authorative fame, the only one who defeated him before this(in his classical outfit I mean) was Luke, and he did so not by the skill of fighting or the force, but challanging Vaders commitment by emphazising his good side, his compassion, his love and that hey I am your son.. remember!? Making Vaders determination and focus all over the place. This duel is Vader completely focused, using the dark sides ultimate motivarion.. hate. Obi Wan of course should be somewhat of a hurdle, bit at this point he should feel that the balance of power between them is in too much favor of Vader... ten years earlier they had a knifes edge duel when he still looked like Anakin, but ten years later he should have become all too powerful. This is watering down the status of greatest villain in movie history.

I watched Kai Pattersons edit where he made all 6 episodes to a movie. He managed to cut out some scenes but at the same time make not feel like you have missed something. I prefered the feel of the Kenobi series as a 2.5 hour movie because I think the flow were improved. Now after having watched this video I think this improved the fight scene compared to the Kai Petterson edit. I think you have matched the music better with what is seen. An example is 2:38 When Obi-Wan are lifting the stones you hear the slower higher notes and then the release of the stones which matches the increase of speed in the music. The Duel Of The Fates theme feels stressfull and has a faster pase that make you feel like you are fighting for your life in a really dangerous place which works fantastic with the danger of falling down the lava in Revenge Of The Sith fight. However I think the music we got in the Kenobi show matched the tone and setting of the fight better because they are fighting on a flat surface and have not the same immediate danger of doing a wrong step and dying because of it. I don't think Duel Of The Fates theme works as good with this fight as in the Revenge of the sith but I think it's fun and interesting to see how different creators have applied the John Williams theme differently to see how this fight maybe could have been with it.

Duel of the fates, as great as it is, doesn’t belong in this show nor work in this duel. People seem to miss that there’s a meaning as to why it plays in the prequels. It plays at certain moments that determines Anakin’s fate into becoming Darth Vader and what that does to the galaxy. In the maul fight, if Qui Gon didn’t die, he would’ve went on and to be the perfect master for Anakin and he’d never become Vader or turn to the dark side. In AOTC, it played when Anakin was trying to save his mom. If he had saved his mom, he wouldn’t have killed the tuskens or be that much into the dark side yet. It plays in ROTS because those two determines the whole fate of the galaxy. If Anakin won, he would’ve eventually reached his max potential and be unstoppable. For this show, it doesn’t really determine anyone’s fate at all and how Anakin is already Vader.

Duel Of fates doesn't work for me in this series/duel edit and neither does battle of heroes. The mood and setting is so different, it needed its own new JW theme and even then, the entire series needed JW to flow right(obi theme proves he could have done amazing job-although i think outside of Reys theme the ST was his weakest/most uninspired). Disney SW without John Williams is so strange like fan fiction to me. Mando and Boba are great scores because you can experiment, but anything closely related to legacy character or settings needs to imitate JW. How can video game scores dating back decades do such a better job than Disney? Even Jedi Fallen Order brought a modern take with the John Williams similarity. SW is just not a space opera anymore and it's disappointing.

Well, compared to every other rescore/reedit I've seen with this, this is the best one for sure. Still though, I'm not really sure this fight NEEDS to be redone, maybe the color grading a little. But with this I don't think you made it better necessarily in regards to the color grading, the only things I like about the color grading you did here are that its slightly more visible and the lightsabers look a tad bit better. But unfortunately, everything else kind of drags it down for me. Colors in regards to the backdrop environment seem very inaccurate and a bit washed out and desaturated for me compared to the original. Also, way....WAY too much film grain added here, it's really noticeable in some parts like 0:26. I'm not a fan of rescores that much, considering they all just use old music from the previous Star Wars titles. I think you did a decent job with it, but again, the score fits nicely in the original and makes more sense than this and is also a new score, which I appreciate. All in all, best attempt I've seen to redo it, but I still think the original fight we got we always be the best one and it doesn't need to be redone.
