Join Collections & Research Director Derek Heidemann as he discusses early 19th-century New England rifles within the Old Sturbridge Village collection. Commonly used by sportsmen and militiamen alike, these rifles were prized for their accuracy due to the twisted grooves inside their barrels, which imparted a spin on the bullet. Gunsmiths, like Silas Allen Jr., embellished the rifles with unique brass patch boxes, side plates, and silver wire inlay patterns. These elements made these guns distinctly New England in design.
