Unfortunately Grandia 1 hd remaster has so many issues with graphics being worse than on saturn as it used inferior PS1 copy of the game, i encountered a bug of game randomly crashing when entering/exiting towns as that is when game changes resolution between town map and world map which can cause a crash as PC games do not like resolution changes in that manner. I still managed to 100% the game with all them issues but I really wished they had not overpromised and under delivered with the HD remaster.

Holy crap, Resonance of Fate! I was starting to think that game only existed to me, like the specter of some game developer who died in my house or something. The fact the mountain of tutorials managed to convey how to operate that combat system is a miracle in itself, trying to explain it with words is impossible. I remember rereading the directions over and over again, blinking, wondering if I was in the process of receiving brain damage... but when I'm playing it, it's one of my favorites of all time.

Excited to grab some grub, sit down and watch this! What I will say, in regards to your introduction statement from my personal viewpoint: Even though you've never really talked much about JRPGs since I've been watching, I actually noticed your fondness for the scene with a lot of the "pseudo-references" to popular ones (or at least ones I know of) through fonts, intro inspirations etc. Enough so in fact, to actually check your channel from BEFORE I started watching, to see if you'd ever covered any JRPG type stuff previously, before the Resident Evil and Silent Hill retrospectives! Needless to say, regardless of all of that, to ME at least, as an absolute fan of your content, I could definitely tell you were a JRPG fan, even if it went unspoken on the Survival Horror stuff a lot, so I see this video here is an absolute *WIN*. Again, super excited to grab some monch and watch through all of this tonight! And I wouldn't mind seeing more content on different genres of games you love in the future! Your commentary on any game you cover that I've played/haven't have always been interesting and insightful to me, and even inspired me to go back to older games I used to practically worship as a kid, and pop 'em in for my own "retrospective" take on them, like the entire 3D Legend of Zelda line-up in release order and the Metroid Prime Trilogy! (As well as any of the 2D games I could readily get my hands on!!!) Thanks for the stellar content as always Jared; keep on rocking, - Gen

It's a strategy rpg that uses a radius system rather than a grid system and has unique physics stuff (bouncing, sliding, the ability to knock enemies off the map as an alternative to killing them). Also a lot of unit customization and what not. It's probably my favorite srpg. Also, I'm curious what the game is in the intro from 0:22-0:28? The character sprites there caught my interest.

So many RPG games have many memories attached to them, the time need to complete can almost bookend parts of your life. Legend of Dragoon was mine and my late brothers favorite, I distinctly remember the celebration we would have when completing a disc, and how much of an ass that divine dragon was. I learned recently that BluePoint is working on the remake of LoD, its in good hands. Shining Soul 1 & 2 hold a special place in my heart too, I remember taking a three day train ride with only our phones to keep us preoccupied, so four of us got the MyBoy Emulator and used bluetooth to play four player Shining Soul 2, and also Four Swords of course. A terribly underrated gem in my book, is Lost Odyssey. An RPG with nothing fresh mechanics-wise, but the unique setting, the animated lore segments, and the art by Takehiko Inoue or Slam Dunk and Vagabond Fame made it a sight for sore eyes on the Xbox360. I remember christmas shopping and seeing it in a bargain bin for $6 at gamestop in 2008, I had lost my taste for RPGs at the time, but flicking it aside I noticed the weight that only a four-disc case could have. That alone was why I bought it. And that alone was what rekindled the RPG fan in me. It's a very emotional and weird at times kind of game. Its even ported to XBone, with no disc switching needed, and good graphics for a 15 year old game.

@30:00 look up the program "z-translate". It can hook into Retroarch (and standalone emulators and basically everything else) and will automatically machine-translate any on-screen foreign language text on the fly by superimposing the translated text over top of the original text in the actual game such that you don't need to constantly be flipping back and forth between applications or have another monitor.

This was a fun video! This is the first I’ve seen from your channel and I’m super into RPGs. Most of these titles I have heard of, but I’m definitely added Grandia 3 and Ring of Red into my backlog. Ring of Red does look super rad

I have played countless JRPGs and somehow never played Suikoden or Legend of dragoon. Upon playing and beating Suikoden 1-3, I loved 2 but 1 ended up becoming one of my favorite games ever. This is a rare feat, and it wouldn't have happened without this video! Slowly chipping my way through all the games in this vid, and they are all great. Thanks so much, love your content.

I'd like to see more of these videos in the future. And love the Xenogears music during the intro. It's one of my personal favorite JRPG's that, after playing it on an emulator, made me snatch the copy before the prices went up in an excessive pace. I do like Resonance of Fate. Weird but quite experimental combat system and it's one of the funnier JRPG's I've played.

Xenogears has the best story in any game I've ever played, and the music is Yasunori Mitsuda pretty much at his best (though Chrono Cross's OST was incredible too). Check out the Xenogears 20th Anniversary Concert if you haven't. It's just mesmerizing.

Suikoden, Legend of Dragoon, and Growlanser were some of the best RPGS I played growing up. I may have been a kid at the time but their impression never left my mind. I thank you for bringing these games into the light. like me and many others have a personal history with these games. I have got a few fond and painful memories of these games and now those memories are coming back, so thank you sir like and sub from me!

Suikoden2, Growlanser Gen, and Ring of Red were my some of my big faves over the years. Those games, along with Ogre Battles 64, I still come back to play still to this day. Heck, I wish there were more "squad based tactics games" like Ring of Red. Just watching the mechs pound the others into scrap metal in close combat is so satisfying.

I also happened upon Growlanser Generations, and it is still in my top 10 all time JRPGs. Growlanser 2 my be short, but it has several possible endings (one of which takes the story down an entirely different arc) which gives a ton of replayability. I think I played through it at least 5 times. Resonance of Fate is all kinds of fun... at first. But the combat never evolves. It's exactly the same in the first battle as it is 30 hours in. That made the otherwise awesome and unique combat get stale really fast, so I never could finish it. With how much you like Strategy RPGs, if you haven't played it, you should definitely check out Brigandine on the PS1. It got totally overshadowed because it released at about the same time as FF7, but it's my all time favorite game. It's pretty lacking on story, but MORE than make up for it on the strategy side. Easiest way I can explain it is [Insert Franchise] Tactics meets Pokemon meets Risk. It has near endless replayability.

I tried soooooo many times to try and understand and get into “Resonance of Fate’s” battle system and just couldn’t. Loved everything else about it (characters, visuals, story). I soooo wish “Wachenroder” would get an English patch like “Shining Force III Scenario 2&3”! And while I love “Suikoden I & II”, “Suikoden V” will always be my favorite!
