It's actually not too bad as far as visual novel style journeys is concerned. The visuals and art are actually quite the delight. Diesel Marcus, I knew it was popular from the stream store front where it is often present. So it's good to hear it's quality that took it there. The idea of Yatzee reviewing it is there interesting part of morbid curiosity, though it might be so far outside his comfort zone he can't get mad about it. I could almost feel his cringe now based on his opinions on jrpgs and him using it as a punch line in episode.

I’ve been saying that for years, that Cyberpunk should have a few nice stories. Steampunk is allowed to be all colorful and light and fun despite the fact that the era it’s based on, the Victorian era, was just about the shittiest time to be alive ever. Armies of uninsured barely paid children had their limbs torn off in unregulated cotton engines, racial imperialism was at an all time high, plumbing hadn’t caught up with the exploding population size so every major city was overflowing with garbage and smelled like raw sewage (because raw sewage was literally flowing through the streets), yet steampunk is allowed to cherrypick the 2 or 3 good bits of the Victorian era and ignore everything else if it wants. Yet every Cyberpunk has to focus solely on the depressing nihilism of the late 80’s and early 90’s where everyone expected computers to murder us or steal our souls once they had the wrong floppy disk inserted into them. Do people honestly think that the average standard of living has gotten WORSE since the Victorian Era? At worst, living standards have stayed the same (some super-shitholes with a lot of people may pull down the average unduly) but if anything it’s gone up. I no longer have to have my arm cut off because I nicked my hand on a rusty pipe, then STILL die of infection because the doctor didn’t sterilize the scalpel.

@misterbadguy7325
@misterbadguy7325 5 жыл бұрын
Baguette That's pretty much it, yeah. Cyberpunk is typically negative because it's an avenue for sociopolitical commentary, the big cyberpunk writers were writing on what they saw as the world that was coming. And cyberpunk itself was basically a reaction to sci-fi futures where everything turned out lovely, so it naturally wasn't too interested in filling the niche. Most steampunk deals in the past, on the other hand, and when you're dealing with a fantasy-ized version of the past, it's only a skip and a hop to outright nostalgic indulgence. Basically, steampunk dealt with the propaganda, while cyberpunk dealt with the cautionary tales.

I want to see one of these cyberpunk settings where there isn't an overarching conspiracy (maybe a few a little too influential companies like we have now, but not super sinister). However there are options available to the player and some circumstantial evidence/red herrings that let the player's inherent genre savvy play the game as a paranoid conspiracy theorist. As they progress, they cling onto one tidbit after another, committing crimes in pursuit of a "truth" that just isn't there. They may uncover the odd corruption here or there, but nothing over-arching. Maybe they get chased by the police at some point, not because of some secret shadow organization but rather because they broke into private property, hacked personnel files, and killed a security guard. You know, all the stuff that you're SUPPOSED to do when fighting an evil shadow organization. They shoot back at the police or security because that's what you do in this sort of game. Maybe have the character contacted by the terrorist/resistance/conspiracy nut organization to recruit them. They are light on solid evidence, but why would you side with the corps over the attractive hacker-girl with a sob story? It'd be difficult to make much good gameplay for those who don't take the bait with the conspiracy theorists. Some scary guys in suits with a sinister aura questioning you about her (she's a criminal) might push the player that direction. Maybe the feds take you in for questioning and you're "rescued" by mystery girl. It'll be difficult to balance maintaining player agency while not giving them a quick option to deny the call and get a game over.
@thebygoneking
@thebygoneking 5 жыл бұрын
The issue would be convincing the player that they’re chasing the rabbit on something that doesn’t truly exist, without making them feel cheated in the end. Players inherently want to solve problems, and while this type of story could be fantastic for a humorous plot, I think it’s next to impossible to make a satisfying narrative with a viable conclusion within the realms of typical dark cyberpunk drama. If I were to write something like this, I would write a paranoid main character with poor social tendencies and a frequency to lapse into a land of imagination. Then, I would play up the exploration of this conspiracy theory for humor, with the main character slowly falling deeper and deeper into ideological trappings and slowly shifting tone from a comedy plot to a psychological horror, where players are forced to follow the protagonist as they take their actions to the extreme while blatantly given the information that the theory is false. This, generates dramatic irony, as the player is aware that the theory is false, but the character is so far gone that they’re going to continue with their plans regardless. The hard part, is letting the players know that it’s false, while still allowing the protagonist to continue their efforts. A few players would leave once they realize they have to go through with the protagonist’s choices, despite their awareness that it isn’t right. Why write it this way? Well, firstly, it establishes that the character “controlled” by the player has their own agendas and goals. If a player believes that the character they’re playing has certain sway over the potential actions, they’re far more likely to accept when circumstances develop out of their control in game. For example, if a player clues into the fact that the conspiracy is fake early on, and they feel that they have full sway on their character’s actions, they’re far less likely to follow through. If a player believes that their character is an individual with their own thoughts and goals within the plot, they’re likely to go through with the main character’s plots, despite how dark they can get..:essentially making the players a witness, and more accurately, a willing participant in the actions. Start the plot simple: have the protagonist receive a cryptic letter in the mail from an unknown address. Have them start to try and “decode” the letter. Players would see a normal letter meant for someone else, but occasionally it would flicker to what the protagonist is seeing, which is an oddly written set of characters. Once the letter is decoded, the protagonist goes on a mission to find full evidence against said corporation or government, eventually aligning themselves with an anti-government or anti-corporation group. The protagonist promises to bring them evidence of their wrongdoings, and the group decides to accept them. Have the protagonist, controlled by the player, go on varying little missions to covertly collect dirt on the corporation. The player sees normal documents, but occasionally they flash to reveal what the character is reading. Have the group react as if he’s utterly failed them progressively each time, and increase the tension between the protagonist and the group while the player is a witness to this madness. Escalate the plot from somewhat humorous to darker when the protagonist ends up killing a security guard, like you suggested, and the group disavows him for his actions. Protagonist plans a large scale attack on said corporation and its workers, making him the antagonist of his own story. Have the player then assume the role of one of the members within the group who was sympathetic to the madness, who then has to go and try to stop the attack while the police are involved. Final confrontation shows just how absolutely mad the original protagonist was from anyone else’s perspective; and end it in a fight between the original main character, and the secondary supporting character controlled by the player. That’s how I would write it, though. I quite like your premise and idea.

I really liked Observer, there are better games but it was nice to have a Cyberpunk game that wasn't a twinstick shooter or a point and click adventure. I want to see a detective game that is pretty much just a normal investigation. The character is you, and the game only gives you a few small handfulls of info at the very start and let’s you run around trying to solve the case.

He mentions no games existing in a cyberpunk utopia, but I can name at least one off the top of my head: Read Only Memories. It has some dystopic stuff in it, but generally society still seems to function and there's hope for the future. Tough call whether I'd call it cyberpunk or just sci-fi though. Is Va11 Hall-A dystopic?

I really liked the positive portrayal of widespread cybernetics in the first half of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. If it wasn't for the neuropozyne requirement, it would have been a nearly ideal scenario, with the cybernetics themselves only being as bad as the person operating them like any other tool/weapon. Then the final act and the sequel had to go and ruin it all, of course, but it was nice while it lasted. Oh well, this is why we can't have nice things.

Well if you looking for a sort of Utopia in fiction that you could say is cyberpunk, you should check out neal ahsers polity series. It has all the hall marks of a grim dark gory cyberpunk, yet people live in a near Utopia with ai's running everything and removing human politicians all together, thereby allowing mankind's tech to jump a millenia into the future and even conquer the vastness of extra solar space travel. There are however a few hiccups, even though the ai are established to be for the most part good people, they are still quite ruthless, and will lay down the lives for the he greater good of the polity, and they kind of expect ordinary human citizens to do the same. Let me give you an example, if you're. Separatist terrorist cell and you want to try and take hostages for political leverage, don't... It's pointless, because the ai's utilitarian logic will justify killing you even if it meant killing the hostages if you could poze and even greater threat later to the citizens. But like I said, the usual protagonists in the cyberpunk story in the form of the seppies are usually the bad guys, while people loyal to the polity ai's including polity agents and AI representatives are generally the good guys. I guess that's why they call it more post cyberpunk than cyberpunk.

Surprised you didn't bring up Condemned 2 during this review. Ignoring that it became completely ridiculous in the second half, and kinda dropped the "investigator" thing during that crappy half, during the first half it did a great job of doing the whole investigator thing by actually quizzing you after each investigation. IMO it was good having that, if you fuck up, you can continue, but you know you didn't do it "perfectly" hangs on your conscious was a good motivator. And instead of being a walking simulator through the haunted mansion, it actually had a pretty damn good combat system (Before it became a crappy shooter in the second half).

1:34 I think the term "cyberpunk" kind of demands it be a dystopia. Cyberpunk is summed up by some people in four words: high tech, low life.

If you're looking for a good indie to review, there's one about to come out of Early Access in September called CrossCode. It's been in early access for over 3 years and it's got the smoothest gameplay that I've experienced in a very long time.
