First story: I don’t think Winston actually wanted to play D&D. He wanted to try a diceless system. I feel like things would have gone better if he’d opened with that, and also not picked on the new players. Good to see this story has a happy ending! Second story: What. The. Fuck. At least OP handled it well and got rid of the problem player, but still, this is why we have session zero: so we can talk about boundaries and what we will and won’t be including in the game! (I don’t think this player would have taken “no sexual assault” for an answer, but at least she would have started the fight about it there and been kicked before she could pull that shit in an actual game.) Third story: Yuck; what a brat. Pro DM tip: if a player starts wailing about how they’ll quit if they don’t get their way, the correct response is “okay, bye!” Also, just… don’t do what Bob did in general. If you have a Kylie in your group, call them on their shit. Don’t let one bad apple spoil the whole barrel.

Playing a game the way the first DM was doing it could be interesting as long as everyone *understood* how it would work and agreed before the game began...playing with more realism than fantasy. Of course, it's no longer DnD. More like tabletop larping? But completely disrespecting the new players by making them waste their time sitting in another room (more than once!), not explaining the 'rules' until it's WAYYY too late, then killing them offscreen...nope. Screw that guy. Third story (and 90% of all DnD horror stories) -- some psychology student should write a thesis paper titled "How Being 'That Guy' Is An Indication Of Narcissism".

I'm running a game right now where one of my players is playing a Volodni... if you don't know it's basically a humanoid fey treant, humanoid with plant properties, a woodling without the fire vulnerability which... I rather don't agree with but I digress. She herself, wanted to play a low RP character that's there and will interact but minimally. A couple sessions ago I learn that she, the player, IS BORED while everyone is in town shopping and such, she's just hanging out on the edges of the elven town doing tree people things... standing there on sentry duty not interacting but was upset with ME that she was bored. I kept asking "what's she doing, this is what she hears what's she do. You see this how do you react" and still it was "I just watch, I listen until I'm needed" and still was bored... I can't even right now guys.

As a bit of a grognard dm I do believe skill checks aren't necessary ability checks can be done if you feel you have a better chance at it that way, but I mostly go with common sense in my sessions you say you want to jump a 2 feet wide pit with a running start, sure you make it. Then again I dm basic fantasy and not 5e so there are no skills except for the thief, but for me that's a feature not a bug. Now the rest of story 1 was absolute BS and I wouldn't have stayed there either.

Story 1: the DM claims he doesn't use HP for realism, but then has a person in full armor go down after one or two sword swings? No anti-armor weapons, no finding gaps, no grappling? Does he want absolute realism or does he want game rules? Idk honestly gold coins are pretty common currency in my party's campaign, we pretty much use gps like dollars for most things and forget about our other coins for a while.

It depends on the dungeon, master, not every quest gives goal is reward, and then there is the understanding of how much things cost in that particular game world. I could probably read whole entire book on currency right about now, especially in game currency, especially with the way electrum is being used at the moment. We do use the copper, silver, gold, platinum system as well, but electrons kind of falls in that weird space between silver and gold. Except for when someone decides to haul and now because of its scarcity, it can be whatever value you want, kind of like the star tile in Scrabble. Seawater, deep dragon ice for that particular system.

I'm going to preface this by saying, I'm not sure if this is real or a fever dream. I was sick and watching reviews of terrible monster movies. One of them, just called Goblin, had the titular monster swallowing its victims whole, vore-style. One of the victims was this woman's abusive boyfriend and the movie ends with a heavy implication that this woman was pregnant with the goblins baby.
