Wait, what did OP and Natalie do wrong? Literally all that happened in-game was Natalie’s character going along with Dave’s character’s prank, and OP’s character saw something that reminded him of his past trauma and acted accordingly. The DM couple did nothing but enable Dave’s creepiness-seriously, how did they think letting him mind-control-rape anything that moved was going to fix his mental health issues? OP and Natalie were 100% in the right here.

Yes, the DM was definitely in the wrong, but there are such things as player etiquette and communication. This could've gone *much* better if OP and Nat just talked about it. OP is being somewhat hard on himself but seriously, don't solve out of game problems with ingame bullshit, this is an out of game problem, the dots connect.

If you're really not sure just think for a moment about the full situation. 2 DMs. 3 players fighting. And 2 or 3 players (sorry, lost track of whether Sam was playing or an out of game friend) that also had to deal with some of Dave's creepiness and then deal with the game derailing because OP and Natalie kind of muffed dealing with it in-game. Fixing the situation after the kerfuffle would have to involve some in-game stuff as well. So even if you think Dave & the DMs got what they deserved, other people had to deal with this as well.

Yeah going to have to agree with you on this one. DM couple and creepy git take all the blame on this one. It's only natural that a couple of young inexperienced players wouldn't expect a DM who's condoning creepy shit like that and not stepping in to nip it in the bud to address the problem. It's well within reason that they felt they had to deal with it themselves. The whole group blaming them is just expecting too much from young inexperienced players and expecting them to be able to see into the future and magically know all the things people learn over time and by experiencing these situations.

I have to criticize they way they thought they could handle this. You do not try to help someone like that by indulging their arrogant fantasies. You have to draw hard lines and enforce them. Otherwise there is no chance of them getting the message. What's more, mental illness is never a shield from being called out for this kind of behavior. And anyone using as such just makes it that much harder for people who need to help to want to recognize and get that help. It just further stigmatizes mental illness.

I think OP is being a bit hard on themselves. Yes, they probably should have gone to the DMs first. But in this case, I doubt it would have done much good, since the DMs were already well aware of Dave's creepy behavior, and chose to do nothing about it in a misguided attempt to "help" him (Seriously, I'd love to know what their intended strategy was. Let Dave run wild and hope he eventually gets it out his system?). Given that Nat's Drow had already been targeted multiple times, and OP's character having been a victim of mind control in the past, them wanting to thwart and expose a rapist is perfectly in character and not at all "metagame-y". And the confrontation finally forced the DMs to acknowledge and address the issue, putting at least a few restrictions on Mr. Rapey Kitsune. OP is NTA. Feel better soon, Doge!

I'm struck by how well the OP writes. That's unusual for one of these horror stories. Anyway... Ok, this story is actually a case FOR metagaming and vigilantism. The OP and his girlfriend were wrong until it turned out they were right. This isn't a case where you can talk it over with the DM because the DM is in on it with the problem player, even if not overtly. She and her helper husband subjected the entire group (who were totally in the dark except for gullible Sam) to a player who they knew was a creepy misogynist with 'R' fantasies. In today's lingo, he was an incel. They allowed him to have a character who had an unwitting sex slave. They allowed him to try to make players and NPCs into more sex slaves or at the least into temporarily abused puppets. They didn't stop him even when it was clearly causing problems for other players. Then when everything boiled over, they gaslit OP and his girlfriend into believing *they* were the problem. OP believes it to this day. DM and her husband HAD NO RIGHT to *secretly* try to 'fix' their antisocial friend at the expense of the other player's mental health and well-being... especially as they were fecking idiots about it. You wouldn't 'fix' a problem gambler by saying they can make a gambling character who gambles with every PC and NPC they can. You also don't 'fix' an incel by allowing them to play as a hero-incel with superpowers (mind control) who gets to keep trying to control/own any female PC or NPC that strikes their fancy. Geezus. That just FEEDS his twisted fantasy. OP doesn't say what the problem player's supposed mental problems were exactly, but misogyny isn't a "mental health issue" for anyone except the recipients. OP seems to think DM and her husband were nice guys, but they weren't. They gave their all to the incel, but they used the rest of the group for his benefit and let him practice his incellitude on them. They are the ones who need to be apologizing.

Many people suffer from mental health issues and had a less than ideal childhood that aren't misogynistic and really into "R" stuff. These issues can explain behaviors, not excuse them. Sorry but "dave" there needed professional help. DM and husband potentially put their players in an abusive situation by allowing the potential for him to remove other players agency non consentually. So while OP wasn't perfect, DM, husband and "dave" were the worst of them all here

The OP did nothing wrong. First of all, there's nothing wrong with being a little cringy, especially if you were fairly young at the time, second of all, in-game issues should be solved in-game, and third of all, as someone with "mental health issues", I can tell you that it's no excuse for having a brainwashed sex slave and trying to rape another PC with creepy furry mind powers. The reasons for that final confrontation were perfectly valid, and had it been allowed to play out without the NPCs suddenly developing clairvoyance and teleporting to them to break up the fight, I have no doubt that the incel foxboy would have kicked the bucket, the mind control on the sex slave would have come undone, and the holy avenger and the ninja would have started a romance subplot due in part to the suspension bridge effect, but overall because they have a lot in common and seem to be compatible; a happy ending.

I'm over 60 y.o. , and on my planet the idea of enthusiastic consent has been a thing my whole life. There is zero excuse for anyone who has seen a Disney movie to pretend they don't know about this idea, or to pretend it's up for debate IRL. As such, any character or game mechanic which denies, or works against that, should be very carefully discussed and agreed before it arises in gameplay, and any player who insists upon it, jumps it into game as a surprise, or tries to hassle it on another player should be subject to extreme suspicion, with the expectation that they will be kicked out with very little argument if they persist. Players have a right to expect this: GMs have a duty to enforce it. Offenders have no right to the benefit of the doubt after a SINGLE warning from anybody involved. EDIT: speling missteak. LATER EDIT: GMs, it is not acceptable to make your other players a part of your half-arsed amateur therapy shenanigans, ESPECIALLY, but not limited to, if it involves unwelcome sexual content. Ever.

Communication is important, I was kicked out of the group out of nowhere because "our playstyles didn't match". I've been with this group for like a year, they never said anything about my playstyle, I never knew it was an issue and they just kicked me. The kicker is DM made that decision with 2 of the players while our group had 5 players in total (including me)

Ok there was already some red flags with Dave in the fact that his character’s companion was is a mind controlled bar maid, he’s enslaved her against her will. It wouldn’t be as bad if she was simply a slave he’d bought but he treats her well enough that if given a choice of freedom she’d stick with him(still bad cause slavery, but it’s legal in this case), or if she was a bandit girl or female enemy who’d tried to kill her who he could have killed, but by sparing her life is legally obligated to serve him, like life debt kind of thing. But then he tries to mind control Natalie into doing sexual things, and clearly other players had a problem with this, yet he continued. I’m a firm believer that ANYTHING can happen in a DND game, even things objectively considered very wrong, the important thing is that the entire party CONSENTS to it.

Heard this story narrated by Drake a while back, but it's always nice to hear other youtuber's thoughts on the same story. Honestly, there isn't much to say that hasn't been said by other people. Mental illness is no excuse for creepy behavior, and while on one hand I agree that OP and Nat should've talked to the DM, considering how much they enabled Dave I don't think it would've helped much. On top of that, unless the DM duo are trained psychologists, they shouldn't have taken up the responsibility of counseling Dave and urged him to see a professional. Unless he did get the help he needed between the time this story was written and now, he's likely thinking he was in the right and that OP was the bad guy for ruining his safe space or something. D&D is not therapy, and trying to manipulate a player without their knowledge and consent to "Fix them" never helps, and makes you even worse then the problem player you're trying to "fix" Second, Treat magic like magic already. Magic is firing a gun with visual exploding around the gun. Ya the person you cast charm person on and fail doesn't remember what happened, but the rest of the room saw it happened. That's why magic is so strong, because it is in no way sneaky. Subtle spells like literally bards breaking out in song to hide their casting, but the visual effects happen once the spells been casted.

You know. I'm gonna agree with most of the commentors here. OP didn't really do anything wrong. Again, these DMs KNEW this about Dave. Even if they handled this out of game. It likely wouldn't have done any good anyway. They KNEW he was a raging creep, and hid this from the other players. So, if the other players brought this up. What would it have done? Them kicking Dave? Obviously not, due to this being "therapy". Tell him to tone things down? Well, they should have done that in the first place. TL:DR: OP and his GF at the time did nothing wrong. And the DMs were about as guilty as Dave himself.

I'm going to have to say everyone here kind of sucks, except Sam and Lena, who didn't intend to cause a disaster. The DM and her husband, however, are probably most to blame because they brought in a disturbed individual to the group without informing the players about it, and proceeded to use the game as therapy sessions when they weren't licensed therapists. While the attempt to help him socially acclimate was well-intentioned, it has to be done in a carefully controlled environment, with everyone aware and consenting of the issues involved. As it were, it just alienated several players and exacerbated the various problems. Though yes, OP and Nat really did the group dirty like that with the metagaming and personal crusade. That always hurts, whether one deserves it or not.

Edgelord in this, not a really bad guy once he had some guidance. Agreed, he went too far in "going after" Dave's character, but I find it almost impossible to sympathize with Dave in any way. There are times in my own life when I would have done, or been a willing part of, far far worse steps against such a person. Mainly, I'd put the problems here on the DMs. Trying to "rehabilitate" Dave was a worthy endeavor, but they needed to have kept him on a much shorter leash, and to have communicated more with other Players to head off any issues.
