You might want to add in a pinned comment that you no longer need to manually add the Alternate Themes snippet. They are already automatically installed and can be enabled with the Style Settings plugin.

I'm very excited to dive into specific templates, I think that's the #1 thing I need to get set up properly in my own vault.
@chr9s8332 жыл бұрын
Templates in combination with the Templater plugin and Dataview is very powerful and efficient combination. It's allowed me to filter down to using fewer folders and create a more database structure with Dataview displays in the top foldernote with lots of automation. I pretty much don't have to go folder searching anymore.

Amazing playlist, Josh ! You might want to add in a pinned comment or in the description that "Folder Notes" by AidenLx appears to be buggy since a recent Obsidian update. "Folder Notes" by Lost Paul seems to be working well today (on my Linux OS).

not using folders has some huge benefits depending on how you like to use obsidian. Most importantly, it prevents you from being too ridgid in your organisation and instead you connect things with links to mark that some notes belong together. I personally use a combination of both, I don't put everything in folders but some stuff I do (all images for example go into one big folder to keep them out of the way, my daily journal goes into one folder etc)
@JoshPlunkett Жыл бұрын
It's not something I would ever do. I like having packages of notes that i can move between vaults.
@doc8125 Жыл бұрын
@@JoshPlunkett the whole philosophy of it really relies on just having one huge vault for everything, or at least not multiple for the same idea. Like I only have one giant TTRPG vault for all my systems, I don't really have a lot of vaults (basically just TTRPG and a more personal stuff vault). Though that's the great part of obsidian I guess, it's flexible enough to really acommodate any project you throw at it, with as little or as much structure and features you need/want
@JoshPlunkett Жыл бұрын
@doc8125 I have one vault per system. But the idea of having one vault for everything would just introduce link bloat in a ttrpg setting. There always going to be similar named things and you don't want that sending your links to the wrong notes. I think the idea of one vault with no folders primarily comes from the core note taking community. For those that note their life. Would make a lot more sense in that regards.
@doc8125 Жыл бұрын
@@JoshPlunkett I think is depends a lot on what you use your vault(s) for, for me it's very rarely rules and mechanics (I tend to run quite rules light non crunchy systems, so remeber them all basically). My vault is more about documenting the worlds (often the same world just played in different systems, which is one reason I like to keep everything together), session notes, character notes, as well as more system agnostic stuff with random generation tables, stuff to help me create stories etc (I also don't use adventure modules, don't have anything against them but they don't really exist for the more niche systems I quite often run, or if they do there's few of them and usually not high quality). If going more detailed to reference system spesific things and the like I can definitely see the strengths of a more structured vault and having one for each system. Again, comes around to my point of obsidian being infinitely flexible and can work for a wide variety of people, including as a organisational tool TTRPGs, I don't believe in one size fits all solution

This video was great but something I am confused about is the way you are able to have the folder arrows as well as the icons? Using the ITS theme the arrows disappear for me and can only be shown on hover. Could anyone tell me how to do this please? I can't find anything across google other than how to get rid of them
@JoshPlunkett3 ай бұрын
Pretty sure the arrows came from an old plugin called Icons that ultimately died and is no longer used/supported. I dont have the arrows in my vault anymore.

Great tutorial, Josh. Speaking of the "Various Compliments" plugin, is it possible to link from one Note to a subheading in another Note?
@JoshPlunkett Жыл бұрын
I havn't found a way to do that with Various Compliments. You can certainly link to a sub section of a note via [[notename#headingname]]

Thank you for making these videos. They are a great resource! I have a fairly extensive Drive folder structure for organising my games. i would like to now "waste" all that work when setting up my Obsidian folder structure. Is there a good way to incorporate an excisting structure into Obsidian? I understand thet I can fairly trivially link and sync PDFs and such regardless of their file location?
@JoshPlunkett Жыл бұрын
You could just create a new vault over your existing folder structure. End of the day, obsidian is just a fancy ui that sits on top of folders and files.

If you make notes like your character 1 and character 2 example with links in the party notes, when you update to proper character names do the links automatically update as well?
@JoshPlunkett Жыл бұрын
Yes, assuming you have a note name "FirstName", and you link to "FristName" through your vault. If you rename "FirstName" to "SecondName"; it will pop up and ask you if you want to rename all the links too.

Which plugin are you using? I use Folder notes by Lost Paul these days. Should be a case of install > enanble and then Ctrl+Click on folders to turn into a Folder Note.

Using folder notes would be ideal for me as i've imported my OneNote notes. However, when I install any Folder Note plugin other than the Core I can't Interact with my folder in Obsidian anymore. I tried the workaround on AidenLx's Github but this didn't work, do you have any suggestions? Great video also!

one minor issue: the way in which the ITS Theme allows for support of alternate themse is very different from how this video says it works. and that change seems so recent that ITS's own documentation on its own git-hub repo still has inconsistencies. as it give base instructions different from yours, but has some instructions that like to paths that give a 404 file-not-found error.
@JoshPlunkett Жыл бұрын
Yes the whole plugin changed recently. Obsidian made some updates to the Theme support and ITS has been completely re-written. It's becoming a problem in that things are constantly changing and as such the tutorials need to constantly change also. I am working to keep this site updated. Might be worth a look-in. And of course. My tutorials are always downstream from the plugins. The source of truth should always be the official plugin/theme documentation. obsidianttrpgtutorials.com/Obsidian+TTRPG+Tutorials/Obsidian+TTRPG+Tutorials
