I found this information really interesting. I wonder if Ed has some compassion for little children therefore making him a good babysitter. Whereas the experience he has with his mother , made him filled with rage at any women that would represent "Mother". His rage was specific.

Was an absolute ridiculous amount of squalor (like reversed rubbish disposal essentially is what one person said, are some photographs of it as well on the Internet) for the bits he lived in (up to about three of the rooms), though he'd locked I think his mothers room and left it exactly as she'd left it

Growing up in Milwaukee WI, I knew about Ed Gein at an early age. One because of my grandmothers love of the dark and scary like Alfred Hitchcock, but also because of what was found in Jeffrey Dahmer's apartment. After that, Wisconsin serial killers was a popular topic. My mother had a number of encounters with him at the video store she worked at and my grandmother worked with him. She still maintains to this day that he was a "good man." As far as Ed Gein goes, she always said that he loved his mother too much and it was her fault he turned out the way he did. Thank you for telling this one. You are a fantastic narrator! This is definitely your calling! It's like Scary Stories to tell in the Dark, but better! And true!

It's not the mother's fault. I think he was loopy from day born. Millions of mothers have been like his mother and sons, daughters never became killers.

It was probably a combination of things. His mother, fathers abandonment, his isolation and feelings of guilt over sexual feelings , and the untreated mental issues he has that were caused by these things

How the fuck can she refer to his crazy murdering ass as "a good man"??? WTF is wrong with some people? I'm sure if he did what he did to you or someone else in your family I highly doubt she'd feel the same way. Pretty disrespectful to the poor souls he murdered thats for sure.

Ted Bundy seemed like a real, nice, guy, too. He even volunteered for suicide hotlines and would walk his co-volunteer to her car at night to make sure she was okay. That's how psychopaths fool people. He and Dahmer had the same fetish of cutting off the victims head after having sex with the dead bodies of their victims. I don't seen science every figuring out this pathology. Psychopaths are born.
@Eisdax

Ed Gein is a prime example of how bad parenting can affect children. Of course it's the mothers fault. The brutal behavior of the father towards the family didn't help either but the way she treated him with her religious bullshit alone, saying that all women are whores , that sex is a sin and should only be had for the sole purpose of reproduction without any pleasure.... this is also a good example why religion should be banned. Or at least extreme devotion towards it.

I can't afford much as I'm a single mother of two boys but if more people just donated a dollar a month imagine how amazing Oddie's page could become. Some people make more in Patreon a month than I do in a year. I think the smaller yet very gifted creators deserve more! I know it's never easy to ask for help so I hope that more people begin supporting your art.

@Wee Mac It's when you abuse the ideals of religion and get it all twisted to suit your own narcissistic needs, which is what Ed Gein's mother did. She clearly had her own problems which she heavily projected onto Ed. For that reason she is one of the worst parents I have ever heard of. If you project your own sh*t onto your children, they'll grow up twisted and end up ruining their own lives, other's lives, etc. This is why I believe it is EXTREMELY important to have your sh*t together if you want to have kids. If you don't, I'd want to advise those people to put any plans about kids on hold until they have it TOGETHER.

So sad and frightening ; it’s amazing how forced celibacy, extreme religious beliefs forced upon children can really impact in the worst way -people. It seems that the most twisted of outcomes stems from child abuse which I’m my mind includes isolation and all the various emotional abuses as well as physical if course but also spoiling -which means not holding a child accountable etc leads to narcissism, sociopathic behaviors and so on. Thank you for the history lesson on this gruesome and tragic case.

I'm going to guess there's an equal or greater number of kids who were raised _without_ religion who are sick in the head -- and plenty who are brought up both ways that become honest, decent people. After all, his brother sounds like a perfectly normal guy, and he was raised the same. So what I _really_ wonder is, was there maybe something more that used to happen we don't know about in that household? They were really private people, and child abuse wasn't talked about much. Did his Dad abuse them? Did his mother look the other way? Was there something that happened on the way home from school to him one day -- or repeatedly? When you hear about some of these extremely private people who go on to do horrifying things, you sometimes have to wonder if there is more to the story than just what gets told to the public....

What attracts us to horror? I think for some of us it gives us something to help us try and understand the horrors in the world around us from crime and other situations. Others find it a relief from their own lives, many of these are those who are living in horrific situations. Still others of us find it a relief from the pain in our lives whether physical or mental, mostly caused by diseases. There's something to be said to the thought things could be worse so that makes today easier to bare. Yet, the horrors of real-life are far worse than anything on the silver screen. Look at what this man did...he was the inspiration of more than one horror film series. So many were most likely saved by him being stopped when he was. Thanks for this wonderful documentary Oddie. Be Safe!

So many factors that cause Ed to go to the route his chose in this life. :( I love horror films, because they show true human nature when allowed to be unleashed, without any rules. It also showcases the contemporary ideologies and beliefs of the time they are made. For example, Dracula demonstrates Victorian sexual oppression and desire. Frankenstein is the dangers of science and technology when they aren't questioned or checked. Hellraiser (this is my own thoughts of it) deals with the 1980s obsession with conservative mentality of family value, what is appropriate sexual desires, and what is consider appropriate relationships with others (the Lemarchands' box/lament configuration/ puzzle box being the Pandora box; just be careful what you think of at the moment you solve the puzzle). There are many other symbolism and thoughts of what makes us want to watch horror films or be drawn into the macabre. I've been into this dark side of humanity since childhood. For me it is a way to cope with the nasty nature of what others had done to me. Makes me have a better understanding of cruel, bullying, harassing individuals in my own life. :3

The Gein story is rather heavily represented within the American horror film genre. I can think of at least 14 right off-hand, there are undoubtedly more. In addition to the films already named, films like House of 1000 Corpses, Hannibal, and even the first season of American Horror Story: Murder House draw heavily upon the Gein story.

Mother dearest, in my opinion, had a very important role in William's demise. He had been dead for quite some time, much longer than the fire had burned. Gein absolutely worshiped his mother. To hear his own flesh and blood brother talk about the person their mother truly was, coupled with mother's severe anger and judgement of his brother was all that was needed. She taught him that fornicators are to be punished. He was around 38 years old when he lit that fire. Of all the fires they had lit during their lives, that was the ONLY fire to go "out of control". Of all the fires he lit from that murder onward, it remained the only fire of which he "lost control". What one would imagine Jason Vorhees from the fictional Friday the 13th movie franchise would do for his mother, so would Gein have done. Sorry, decided for some nostalgia tonight and revisit these excellent episodes. lol

@Kat Slat - I'm sure you've heard of Ed Gein before. Oddie pronounced his name wrong, saying "gyne" instead of "geen". Ed Gein was the inspiration behind many horror movies like "Psycho" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". There were even two movies out directly about Ed Gein. One in 2000 starring Steve Railsback who played Gein and in 2007 Kane Hodder played Gein. I also understand that that the character "Buffalo Bill" in "Silence of the Lambs" was based on Gein. 'Ole Eddie is a favorite subject in the horror genre which does leak over into the "normal" world occasionally.

BTW - in the early part of the video Oddie explains that Ed was prone to inappropriate outbursts of laughter which is actually indicative of neurological disorder(s). As many - if not most - mental illnesses can be physiologically demonstrable through specific brain scans, it's very likely he'd suffered from very early on from some mental malady. Add in the controlling and manipulative nature of his mother and his father's alcoholism with an unhealthy dose of religious fanaticism and it isn't difficult to see how he turned out the way he did.

I wish what I’m about to say could be sourced but a famous documentary filmmaker actually conducted and filmed hours of interviews with Ed sometime in the mid-70s. My memory is telling me it’s the director of ‘Fog of War’ about former defense secretary Robert McNamara but I could very well be misremembering. This sounded so fascinating that I found a way to email him and urge him to release the film. I got a very courteous reply from his agent saying that yes the film does exist. Apparently it triggered a clash of lawyers which the agent was unable to get into. I was left with a ‘maybe someday’. Given what a legend he’s become it’s amazing I’ve never even heard his voice and the urge to hear the most disturbed killer in history explain himself is undeniable.

@@merileeboubard694 correct. It was being vandalized and was stolen shortly after placement. It was recovered a few years later in Seattle, Washington from a gentleman that was operating, from what I could understand, a traveling Oddities Roadshow. People were also chipping away pieces of Augusta's head stone as well but her headstone is still in place. You can still to this day go to the burial site and see where people are taking dirt from the surface where Ed is buried. It is said that he is buried between his brother and his mother. I'm not sure of the accuracy though simply because of the publicity the case got. I feel like they would have put him somewhere else just in case someone got the idea to go exhume and steal his body. I feel like maybe they would have put him in a mausoleum instead of in the ground. Somewhere that the average person would not have access to the body

16:01 to 16:05 slowed playback speed to .75 percent, simply to better focus on historical footage of era furnishings, to catch domestic items that may still be around today, and wow 🤯 .. “details” in that pic blew mind briefly! Plus, @ 3am? Holy Yikes lol!! Thank you!! Gratefully hub and me are Patreon members, but logging in there can wait til after daybreak, haha!

Oddie, I'm so sorry to hear the difficulties of your friend and her roomie. I have lit candles for them to draw on the energy however they wish, to ease pain and gain strength for this dreadful fight. I think you do a magnificent and artful job of treading the KZbin line of acceptability, , and I intend to keep trying to help this channel grow....I also intend to become a Patreon with a regular monthly donation to help support the fine work you do and share with us. I will be seeking you out of Facebook to request friendship, it will be under a different name, but I will identify myself to you. I sincerely hope things turn around for your friend...many blessings and light to all concerned. Please take care of yourself....🇨🇦💜

Thank you so much for all your time And energy on these videos. I know your worried about KZbin and there need to clean up All the "nasty" or "horrible" photo placed on KZbin, but it doesn't take much to Google the photos you spoke of. It's history and I find the more we try to cover it up the more it's looked for. You as always have made a great video, I look forward to more, when I can, I will be making you the first and only one I will support through pateron. That's just how much I am devoted to your channel

New to this channel and love it! Tell me, do you dramatise parts of these (describing the laughter of the police officers, for example) or do you base it on reliable sources? Just curious.

Yay!!! Another offering from Oddie...I didn't know you sidelined in taters. Great film and photo segments for this, and, as usual your narrative was spot on. Ive always been weirdly fascinated by the Ed Gein story, and wondered just how he got twisted in quite the way he did. I do hope you are enjoying the fruit season as Summer begins to slowly wane. Thanks for this....you always manage to satisfy, and make even the most gruesome of tales a little poignant. You helped me begin my day because I was too impatient to wait until tonight to view this....perhaps it will get a second screening before bed....🖤🇨🇦

ObsoleteOddity Hello oddy I was just wondering if have you ever thought about doing a video about the German man that was a homosexual cannibal he went online to a website called cannibal cafe met a guy and ate him. I believe they both indulged in eating his genitals but not sure. If not I am sure your subscribers would love to see you do a documentary about him

Kenneth Desmond Mosley , it's called Silence of the Lamb. It is loosely based on this story. Honestly, I had hoped it was just some weird writer's story.

Great telling, Oddie. When I was a kid in the early 70s, one of my neighbours came from a town near Plainfield and once told me "Eddie was a really nice guy. Everybody loved him. Until we found out he robbed graves and killed people."

Thank you for sharing this. I've read several books on Ed Gein and did not know about his brother. This is exactly why I like to read several books concerning non-fiction. Very interesting and I love your voice.
