Ever since 2008, Trackmania speedrunners have gone to great lengths to optimize the world records in the game. But somehow, despite their efforts, an unbelievable "obvious" shortcut went undiscovered, hidden in plain sight for 13 years.. until now. This is the story of D06 Obstacle.

The thing that made this shortcut not just really simple, but made everyone feel stupid, is that if you're a relatively new Trackmania player, holding the throttle and flying off the edge of a wallride is a classic _rookie mistake_ to make in any other Trackmania map. Yet Rollin smashed this record using that very same _"rookie mistake"._
@wilsusonnect4542
@wilsusonnect4542 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but also, it’s tied into the fact that players had become really good at the map. If you’re not so fast that your speed would otherwise force you to release, it’s not actually faster. So you first have to push the absolute limit before it becomes viable.

@brentlidstone1982
@brentlidstone1982 3 жыл бұрын
What I think is so great about it is that this shortcut doesn't even go off the track like all the other shortcuts usually do. Most shortcuts skip from one point in the track to another in a way that wasn't really intended in the track's original design. This one doesn't do that, it's exactly how the track is designed to be played, just more hardcore.
@BillyViBritannia
@BillyViBritannia 3 жыл бұрын
@@brentlidstone1982 It does go off the track in the vertical axis though... I don't understand why you would consider any shortcut it the other 2 horizontal axes to be unintended paths, yet skipping in vertical axis is more ore less within expectations.

@eragonawesome
@eragonawesome 2 жыл бұрын
@@KirtFitzpatrick the one limiting factor I think is that you do just lose so much speed to jump into and out of the track, I think it probably will stay such that driving as intended (except the jump) up until that last checkpoint will probably stay faster than trying to zip from checkpoint to finish and back repeatedly

Being the first to use a shortcut in a Speedrun is such a great feeling. I rediscovered an old KZbin video that Showed a shortcut which I used for an any% run of Mirror's Edge and got WR and sub 30 for the first time. The most interesting part of that level is that another runner only beat my standing WR just days earlier using a different shortcut I haven't seen elsewhere. But only a few days later the competition did the shortcut better and they still keep the WR today. There are no other runners, so there is a lot of time to be saved as shortcuts to be found.

Fun fact about this shortcut: it was actually known for a really long time among casual stunters. The problem was that it was thought to not only be way slower than the WR pace but also not really worth trying considering how easy it is to slam into a wall or just slide on landing. I remember a few friends of mine having fun doing 180s off of it and barely landing on the other side, usually turtled or flipping from the impact, and then doing replays where the camera swoops under it Speed Racer style.

Now that makes more sense, I was thinking, is just so stupidly simple that I could see it being that in the first 2 seconds, and I could see myself doing it even in accident if I didn't see just by how obvious it was, but this makes 20 times more sense, after hearing how the game works it makes sense that pro played would discard the shortcut for going against common sense.

the “record music“ always gives me goosebumps. like even though i am not a tm fanatic at all i think everyone can appreciate the gravity of what has been achieved. greatness touches us all, and can’t be put into disciplines. universally amazing.

I really like the acknowledgement that this was obvious. I can totally see why it would be missed. This track is so monotonous, yet requires so much focus, that it's practically designed to give you tunnel vision, but you'd think it would be done accidentally at some point as well. Either way, I really like the humility in being able to admit that. It happens sometimes.

I have watched several of your videos and I think you are one hell of a story teller! You can make the most nerdy computer game into something interesting to watch - for hours! Heck, I even downloaded the game the other week to test. I got tired of it after three days, but nevertheless, here I am again watching your videos. :-) Keep it up!
