While Ocarina of Time will always hold an extremely special place in my heart as the game that essentially introduced me to games, I have to appreciate Majoras Mask so much not only for how quality it was, but for how WELL they designed the game in such a small timeframe. Never before or since has there been such an intense sense of foreboding in the WAY Majoras Mask encapsulated you in it's world. Ocarina of Time was iconic for its ingenuity and progression overall as a game. OoT was ahead of its time but Majoras Mask was art.

Thats contraversal, but im not coming for you but the creators used most of the oot items and npcs. Also termina feild and some temples started off as some of the old temples and hyrule field from oot but they were changed to give a diffrent feel. Thats the only reason it was created so fast.

Aaron Ramirez Yes, but there’s no Zelda, no Hyrule, no Ganon, no Master Sword and no Triforce. They created an original story using recycled NPCs (with updated assets) in a universe of their own imagining. I have both OOT and Majora’s Mask on N64, the original hardware. They both play at 240i. Yet, graphically, no matter how beloved OOT is to me, it looks like total shit. It absolutely doesn’t hold up graphically. The textures are bland and lack shading. Majora’s Mask, on the other hand, has much better texture work, with shading. The UI is prettier, the environments are prettier, everything looks much much better, and it holds up far more. Beyond even all that, somehow the framerate on Majora’s Mask is somehow much more consistent despite being more graphically intensive. Ocarina Of Time is poorly optimized, and barely gets 20 FPS on the best of days. Majora’s Mask has much much much better developed side characters. Every NPC in Majora’s Mask feels like an actual person in comparison to the NPCs in OOT, which feel like just coded game characters. Overall, I appreciate OOT more, but Majora’s Mask made much better use out of what Ocarina Of Time created

Ocarina has the more epic "hero of time" storyline (I think most would agree that Ganondorf/Ganon is a better main baddie than Majora) and less frustration with game saving and doing things over. Its just dam near a tie for me. And I say all this after having just done beaten both games again. MM deserves alot of respect but I got reminded again why OoT is great as well.

Once I got through the Water Temple for the first time, I began to realize how fun it was. The design is actually pretty genius and Dark Link is such an iconic enemy. I played enough to remember the order of where I had to go, and after that, it was pretty great. (I don't think Morpha is a very fun boss fight though). But the Great Bay Temple? Ugh, I had to use a walkthrough on that, it was so frustrating. Gyorg made me want to pull out all my hair (he was improved upon in the 3d release though)

Not only that, but Link himself never got to experience his Ocarina of Time adventure when he went back in time. So he ultimately experiences deep regrets which leads to him becoming the Hero's Shade in Twilight Princess. The whole ending for him is so damn dark. At least in the adult timeline, he's known forever as a hero for all his deeds. In the child timeline, all he does is warn the princess ahead of time and undoes his entire adventure. Link's anxiety and regrets alone make Majora's Mask even better. In the child timeline, he won't be remembered as a hero in Hyrule, and he won't be known back in Hyrule for his heroism in Termina -- since it's a parallel world. His entire life was regret.

I like MM more because it took us away from the “get strong sword and save Zelda” plot, it was a breath of fresh air. I also adored the eerie feeling of the game, the dark and grimy textures on the N64 version and the side characters and quests.

The game found me, I came across a golden N64 cartridge with its title picture completely scratched off. (So I had no idea what game it was) I went home... For me Oot is what classic Zelda games are in story, dungeons, gameplay while Majoras mask is like a black sheep with its dark story/themes and characters that breaks away from save Zelda and the kingdom from Ganon(or any demise incarnation). It dives into its characters mentally, so it's really up to what you prefer: The Big adventure or the side characters. I love Majoras mask for it's side quests but I prefer Ocarina for Not only it's classic story but also It's effect on the overall timeline.

Majora's Mask is my favorite in the series, even after Breath of the Wild. And I honestly didn't have as much trouble with the Great Bay Temple as much as I did with the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time. And I love Majora's Mask's OST more, although a good majority of it is from Ocarina of Time.

One thing you fail to mention is how dramatic of a change the games brought to design during its time. Ocarina was a massive step forward, jumping from 2d to outright inventing 3d solutions that are still used today. Majora utilized most of OoT's advancements, and even its art resources. Historical context is often more important than direct comparisons.

Majora would never have been the first. Nintendo were determined to set the first 3D Zelda in Hyrule and have ganon(dorf) as the villain. The same can in many ways be said about Breath of the Wild in the HD and open-world era.

You can't truly and fully appreciate what OoT did to the gaming world if you didn't play at launch. MM is an amazing game but doesn't have that impact of "That first time" feeling you get that OoT had. As a 11 year old playing OoT for the first time I experienced joy, laughter, excitement, fear, shock. Never again did a video game put me through those kind of emotions. MM done a few things better like side quests and NPCs and let's you play as a Deku, Goron, Zora. It also has the greatest iteration of Link ever in a LoZ game, Fierce Deity.

FierceDeityRick as a first game I can imagine that nostalgia would win you over, but it's 19 years old. there are bound to be problems with it that will affect the game in some way, even with the remake. sure, majoras mask is also old and has it's problems - but the point of this video was to evaluate the games and compare the two based on the story and how functional they are. you can't be mad at people and say they just aren't 'appreciating' the game enough. they were trying to take an outsiders perspective to compare the two.

The problem with the Majora's Mask dungeons is that they all feel off, like they were just thrown in because it's a Zelda game. At least in Ocarina the adult dungeons had specific themes (Fire, Water, Shadow etc.) That made them thematic and memorable. Imagine how lame it would've been if they'd just made a "Kakariko Village Temple" or "Death Mountain Temple" which is basically what they did for all the areas in MM. Kind of wished they'd just thrown out the idea of full dungeons and just had more mini-dungeons and areas like the Pirates' Fortress

Majora's Mask is my least favorite 3D Zelda game. Here is why: 1. You have to restart some things over again when the clock runs out. Learning how to navigate the woods, learning one of the songs again, restarting a side quest you didn't finish, a dungeon you didn't finish, etc. The song that slows down time helps, but I still had to repeat the damn great bay temple all over again! 2. Certain events only happen at a certain time on a certain day. This is a problem because you have to wait constantly at many areas if you want to find the collectibles without using a walkthrough. Example: in the hotel, there is a bathroom. At around midnight, a hand comes out of the toilet that will give you a heart piece if you give it some paper. I went to that bathroom before midnight, and I didn't think there was anything special about it. I would have never thought to go back there if I didn't look up where the heart pieces were. 3. Some of the side quests don't really give you any clues on what to do next. You're supposed to figure out what to do next by roaming all over the place, and hope that you're at the correct location at the correct time. Example: in the Anju and Kafei quest, you're supposed to show up at Anju's house during noon on the 3rd day to get a delivery letter to Mama. The problem with that is that the game doesn't give you any hints or anything that you're supposed to go there on day 3 at noon. You're just supposed to guess where to go. 4. There were few dungeons, and they weren't that great, with the exception of the stone tower temple. 5. The opening was definitely the slowest opening in any Zelda game.

I've always liked Majora's Mask over Ocarina of Time, so this outcome is satisfying. Ocarina was my first Zelda game and it does hold a special place in my heart, but Majora's Mask refined everything that made OoT great and added even more. It's actually difficult for me to replay OoT sometimes because of its slower pace. The quickness offered by the Bunny Hood and Goron Mask and Superb Swimming offered by the Zora Mask combined with a more compact but interesting game world makes Majora's Mask so much more palatable.

This was a close battle for me as they both bring nostalgia. I remember playing OoT when it was released and immediately was hooked. Beat it countless times. Then came majoras mask and even as a kid, I was 9 or 10 at the time, I could feel the dark tones of the game. They are both good but I think I slightly prefer the darkness to MM. This is 1A and 2A for me. Now after watching this I'm going to load up MM and start a new file :)

I played MM first and the feeling of how alive the game was. After I got past the timer which always got on my nerves I started to appreciate the game more. Unraveling the mysteries of the sidequests was so rewarding to me. NPCs that just don't stand in one spot all day, that marked me.

I knew I wasn’t the only one who thought the Kafei side quest was top notch it kinda felt like post game. It had a sad and happy ending because the ending of the quest had them spend the final seconds before the moon crashed down to you knowing that they will die being officially married. And as soon as you get that mask you’ll reset to the first day like nothing ever happened. But when you beat Skull kid the end credits shows them getting married so nothing to worry about.

Couldn't we all agree that both of them are great Zelda games? The deep storyline of OoT. The dark atmosphere of MM. Awesome soundtrack, memorable characters, replayability and solid gameplay from both. Ocarina is my favorite, but Majora's is in my top 5. My only complain about MM is that there are only 4 dungeons and most things seems to be... out of place, at least for me. You jump in a hole in the beginning and suddenly you are in a parallel world called Termina. But that doesn't change the fact that it is a awesome Zelda game, one that i replay even to this day.

Majora's Mask is a game that I developed a love and appreciation for over time. At first, it was kinda jarring because I was so used to Ocarina and had beaten it countless times, and the 3 day thing threw me off. But as I got older, I sat down and played it and realized that it's a really unique and ambitious game, and nowadays I think I'd put it above Ocarina on my list. Despite the fact that I've played through Ocarina dozens of times, Majora just left a lasting, unique impression on me that no other game has. And the fact that they reused character models and other assets from Ocarina and made a completely original game out of them in an insanely short development process, without making the game feel like a quick cash grab from the success of Ocarina, is an amazing achievement.

Although MM won, I believe it deserved to win one more category. Story. There is an insane amount of symbolism, true deep storytelling without exposition that leaves you wanting to know every single thing about every NPC so you can piece together what's happening in the absurd land of Termina. The main premise of the game can be heavily theorized in so many ways as to what it all means, eg. A lot of people think Link dies to Skullkid while searching for Navi then sells his soul to a theoretical devil (mask salesman) to reclaim his life, as with not doing so his true self is forever gone and he could only live the rest of his days as a deku child, and in doing so he cursed the entire land of Termina in to a living hell where everyone has to come to terms with the inevitable demise of their land and everything they know over an excruciatingly sorrowing 3 days, and have to live those 3 days over and over again until the end of time itself, leading Link or the happy mask salesman to be the real antagonists of the game. This is one of hundreds of fantastic theories out there and that's only for the main story of the game, let alone the dozens of insanely symbolic and emotional side quests that all have their fair share of theories. The fact the game can make people think outside the box in these ways shows it has a much more engaging story than OoT, where the story doesn't go anywhere beyond you are an orphaned child destined to be the hero that slays Ganon, rescues Hyrule and saves the princess. It doesn't really stem far beyond that and the there is no real NPC development like in MM. Buuuut this is just my opinion.

I remember all of OoT music by heart, but the music quality did get much more complex and interesting in MM. I personally prefer OoT for music, but that’s because of childhood nostalgia. MM’s music took you too a whole new world with each soundtrack, while OoT made music to vibe to. MM made masterful cinematic and themed music, while OoT created an album’s worth of incredible bops.

The main mechanic of the Forest Temple was fighting ghosts. You had to defeat the poe sisters to progress. Heck, you had to go to the graveyard and race a ghost just to be able to enter the temple.

The 3 day mechanic ruins the game for me, the sidequests are scattered and unintuitive, and 3 of the 4 dungeons are forgettable. To be fair, Stone tower is my favorite dungeon in the series, but that can't carry the game. People keep saying MM is the underdog in this debate, but i hardly ever see people argue Oot over MM. I'm cool if you like MM tho great game, but Oot is just better

I don't think the sidequests were scattered. They were about different individual people with problems. Each npc was unique and it brought the world together. Still neither game is as good as people hype it up to be

It's hard to choose between the two... Ocarina of Time is the first adventure game I ever played and it is what made me fall in love with Zelda in the first place. As a kid, I didn't really pay attention to what had the better story or soundtrack, I just knew how they made me feel. Both games gave me a feeling that is hard to explain; I want to describe it as 'mystical'. Needless to say, I couldn't get enough of Ocarina and after beating the game with my friends I couldn't wait for the next one to come out. Going into Majora's Mask I was so excited I almost pissed myself, and it didn't disappoint. It brought back all the feelings from the previous game and amplified them with it's new-found darkness. I played this game like every day for half a year haha, doing all the side-quests and figuring things out on my own. In the end, if I had to chose (and I don't want to), I would have to go with Majora's Mask as the game that evoked the strongest emotions in me and brought me the most joy. There is something about the way this game makes me feel that no other game has managed to ever do. I remember my friends at the time complaining that you could not be adult link and that the game was too short... none of that bothered me. I still loved this game and it is not only my favorite Zelda but favorite game of all time. :)

While the masks make some nice variation in the gameplay, they also can destroy part of the gameplay (That stonemask for example). Overall the aspects, that were close calls actually are more of a personal opinion and make it hard to be objective. The only truelly undeniable reason, that gives MM the advantage, is, that MM was made with OoT as a base. But if we had to consider the "water-level-haters" as the deciding factor, watertempel is better than great bay temple (but only by the frustration the current can cause)

I feel like Ocarina of time had basically all forgettable dungeons. There was the water temple which was memorable because it was tedious and there was the forest temple because it was PHENOMENAL. The child timeline had basically terrible dungeons as well. Majoras mask has four of the best dungeons in the game plus the definitive best mini dungeons in the series

Bro Majora's mask just feels different when I you play it. The characters are more likeable and more Alive in there own way, the bosses are very unique. The mini-boss battles are fantastic and the story line is so good. The final battle could be more difficult, but it was satisfying when you defeated him with the fierce deity mask. Don't get me wrong, I love Ocarina of time but Majora's mask is like one of the best games I've ever played.

OoT is great, and it's importance in the evolution of Video games cannot be overstated, that said Majora's Mask was a better game because it had a darker tone, it took more risks and it attached you more to the world you were in than OoT, It was different than the typical hero saves the kingdom trope that Zelda was starting to play out. You also got to know the characters of Termina. Oot is a classic, and one of the ten most important games ever made, still though I find Majora's Mask infinitely more enjoyable, and I played it several times, that I cannot say about many Zelda games.

Haven't played either in a few years (thankfully i recently purchased a GameCube and the Zelda collectors edition). My initial though was "obviously OOT is better", but this video swayed me a bit. I forgot about all the great things in MM, remembering the frustrating parts more. MM is definitely the weirder of the two, which i appreciate. Can't wait to play both again.
