Seal's Flippers Swollen Up from Fishing Line

Excitement among the OCN rescuers - if this potential rescue succeeds, it will be rescue #600 for 2021, the unofficial target for the year based on the rescue numbers from 2020. They take extra time to plan out the rescue to make sure she does not get away. She has multiple very tight loops of fishing line around her neck and chest and also around her flippers. The fishing line is so tight that her flippers have completely swollen up. The blood flow and range of motion is heavily restricted and she is lucky that she is being rescued as she would not have survived for long. The rescuers exchange a quick fist bump to celebrate this milestone achievement of 600 rescues in one year, and they are off to rescue the next seal in need. 🦭

Unfortunately, after the removement of such a tight enteglement, she was most likely more paintful than before, since the blood started flowing and released the entire pain of the swallen flippers. Hopefully the flippers were not inflmaed yet, so it may have healed quick. I'm happy that found this poor thing.

I love to hear Antoine talking soothingly to them while they are being cut loose. I know he's giving them little rubs as well while at the same time scanning the herd looking for other entanglements. Tony is obviously someone who loves being able to help them.

600 rescues this year is a wonderful number but also very heartbreaking that out of all the seal beaches in the world there were 600 beautiful creatures in need of rescue just on the beaches you guys patrol. How many more are out there somewhere suffering from our garbage and lack of caring what it's doing to our wildlife? Definite mixed feelings about your milestone. On the one hand you have saved 600 lives, which is the result of SO much work and passion and love. It's truly amazing! On the other hand it just shows how bad the problem is in the ocean, I mean 600 seals have been tangled up in something that was casually left by humans that would have ended their life without the amazing OCN team. So I guess in lieu of congratulations I'll just say: Amazing work!! The world is so much better because of you all!

That seal had some instant relief from those shackles on it's flippers. A couple days the swelling will go down and the seal will start getting back to being a seal!
