Painful Seal Rescue

Several rescues are happening in this video - but one of them stood out for the team. While most of OCN's rescues are quick and painless, some of them leave the rescuers almost as breathless as the poor creature in front of them. "Seal 5" was one of them - a thin and weak piece of cotton string had left a deep and very painful cut. Flesh had grown into the fabric already, making it difficult for the rescuers to remove it. They had to peel the string out of the wound.
There is no time to linger - they quickly move on to the next seal, there is a seemingly endless amount of entangled seals, and we do our very best to get to them before they get hurt. 🦭

"The BIG one!" "The grey one!" "The one that's moving!" "The one by the rock!" "The little one that's next to the big one that"s by the water!" How the heck do these guys get a bead on the right seal all at the same time, manage to keep it in their crosshairs while running wildly, and successfully coordinate their efforts to nab these flippery, slippery things? Lucky for the seals they are geniuses at this.

That was a crazy cluster of rescues Team. The deep cuts on the seal with the cotton entanglement were horrendous. Also the overgrown fishing line is a huge problem so I'm pleased you found the tag. There were a couple of tiny pups in this cluster which is very worrying but at least you were able to get them fairly early. ❤ PS: Does Denzil have bionic vision as well as super human speed?! How he can see so many entanglements so quickly is freakish. ☮❤🦘🇦🇺

Cotton tread is very hard, when knitting or crocheting with it, it can burn the fingers after a day! It's kind of stiff, it doesn't stretch like wool, so I guess a seal with a strand of cotton around it's neck will have horrible wounds...

Of all the channels on KZbin, this one is: - the most interesting - the most exciting - the most uplifting. Thank you again, team members. ----- For the next version of nets, might there be value in having hand-hold-sized loops of webbing sewn along each edge of each zipper, i.e. one continuous length of woven webbing the full length of the zipper, securely sewn onto the zipper seam or the netting beside the zipper, with un-sewn hand-hold gaps somewhat wider than a man's hand. Team members could grasp the hand-holds and pull the sides of the zipper together, to facilitate re-closing the zipper, thus reducing mechanical stress on the slider unit and prolonging the life of the zipper. Also, when attempting to roll indignant seals over to expose the alternate zipper, team members could grasp the handholds and apply seal-rolling force. The attachment points of the notional hand-hold webbing would be subjected to high localized tensile forces which might tear the zipper strip or netting material. To avoid such damage, an additional continuous reinforcement webbing should perhaps be fully-sewn the full length of each zipper and the hand-hold webbing be sewn to the fully-sewn reinforcement webbing. The fully-sewn continuous reinforcement webbing would distribute the tensile loads along the length of the netting.

@Asherah 1147 -- you must not have seen too many of these rescues ... MOST of the time, the seals are caught in huge tangled balls of line that DON'T have fish, OR bait, in them ... seals are playful, and enjoy playing around with these discarded balls of line, often swimming through one or more loops, and the loops get stuck around their necks and chests and the seals can't get rid of them ... there've even been videos where, because of the entanglements, the seals can't feed as well, so they lose some weight, and the entanglement becomes loose, moves around, and becomes entangled AGAIN... hence the double wounds on some of the poor seals' necks

My goodness......what a busy day at the office!!! The cruelty of fishing lines and cotton string is disturbing and painful to watch these seals suffer through. Thankfully, the Salt Water Pharmacy is open 24-7. What a dedicated and skilled team, to take on these challenging rescues. Thank you, Seal Whisperers, for your passion to help as many of these beautiful animals that you can. 👏👏👏👏❣❣❣❣

So many seals entangled with bad cuts. Great job spotting them and cutting these discarded strings out of the seals' necks! The seals were happy to run off for a nice swim after surgery, maybe they are saying, I haven't eaten well in a while, but now I feel like I can, I have a new lease on life! Very productive day! Thanks OCN!

Every time I watch these videos I'm amazed at what you guys do and I thank you for what you do. It is truly unbelievable how much junk is in our ocean doing all his damage to these poor animals they can't help themselves or pull this stuff off themselves. We have so much work to do in cleaning up this planet that we have screwed up because this is the only home that we have and it has our moral responsibility to repair the damage in which we have done to it.
