The rescuers spot an entangled seal which turned out to be a recapture, but in the process they find two other seals in need! Situations like this are the reason why we usually take 4 rescuers along. The seal colony is already in motion and we can use the situation to look for others.
One seal has a few loops of fishing line wrapped around his jaw. It's not life threatening but very painful and can easily cause serious drainage problems. The other seal had recently picked up a loop of white packing strap, a very common entanglement. He is very vocal about his displeasure to be left waiting in the rescue net. Once the entanglements is gone and he is out of the net, all his angers seems to be gone. He takes his time to calmly look around and eventually waddles back into the ocean. 🦭

I’m always amazed that you guys are able to spot the injured seals and then capture them amongst the fleeing crowd. It’s so heartbreaking seeing that it’s human rubbish in the oceans that’s causing all of these injuries. You guys are truly amazing for what you do for these beautiful creatures 👏

People think intelligent life means addition and subtraction and along those lines, but it comes in all forms and all levels. There are animals that seem to have incredible emotional intelligence, like horses, they are very empathetic. Just because something isn't smart by human standards doesn't mean they can't understand a complex situation like this, at least on some level.
@almafuertegmailcom
@almafuertegmailcom Жыл бұрын
@@TexRobNC Exactly. To the point where modern humans might not even recognize humans from 10.000 years ago as "human intelligent", even though their brain capacity was identical to ours, how advanced a modern human is vs a human from 10k years ago is entirely based on learning. If you somehow could bring a baby from 10k years ago to today, and have a family adopt him, science says it would develop normally, go to school, and just be another member of modern society. Animals are quite smart, more than we give them credit for. A lot of our inability to recognize their intelligence comes from the fact that they don't use language. You don't have too far to see our bias, just a few centuries ago people thought of people that were born deaf as mentally disabled. That's how far our bias for language goes, or rather our inability to understand intelligence that doesn't use spoken language.

I’m always amazed how you guys spot entanglements. Granted some are so obvious but others are not so. My guess is your eyes have been trained after years of doing these rescues to spot when “something’s not right.” I volunteered at a marine mammal care center here on the west coast of the USA where I saw so hundreds of injured or malnourished sea lions, elephant seals, harbor seals and a few fur seals caught and rehabbed so they could be released back into the Pacific Ocean. It’s heart wrenching to me when you capture a seal that is so badly injured but can’t do much other than free them from its entanglement and/or wish it well on its recovery. Thank you for all you do.
@OceanConservationNamibia

Well with good binoculars, amazing team work, lots of experience, and a lot of luck.There are normally at least 3 rescuers scanning the same group of seals. Sometimes it is the body language of the seal that first catches our attention, often an entangled seal is very wary and skittish, presumably due to being in pain and unable to free itself of the entanglement. Sometimes it is the sunlight catching the tiny thread poking out from its neck. Once we have all focused on the seal and agreed that we believe there to be an entanglement one of us doesn't take their eyes off of it while the others prepare for the rescue. We often lose track of an individual in a large group of fleeing seals, but in most cases at least one person is able to guide the one with the net if need be. Thank you for sharing with us, cool work 😃

We are unfortunately only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. The goal of these videos is to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

i just realized this happend pretty much today... i dunno why but i somehow had the feeling this rescue videos were back from the day. seams so unreal to witness things on the other side of the world almost on same day. and also makes me sad that humanity still didnt solve this polution problem. it should be so easy, just dont throw trash into the ocean... idk how this is even real.
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia Жыл бұрын
What we 'throw away' does not disappear magically, it always ends up somewhere in the wild, either in a landfill or in the oceans. Plastic is formidable, but it will outlive us all, so the less we use, the better.
@meggi8048
@meggi8048 Жыл бұрын
@@OceanConservationNamibia i am a naiv german. we do a lot of recycling and our plastic usually doesnt end up in a landfill. but we have other environmental problems. we instead try to kill much more animals and humans with air pollution due to fine dust through coal power plants. thats been decided by the "green" party which supposedly wants to rescue animals and the planet... and co2... if people lawfully throw their garbage away in a can but it ends up in nature again, its not a peoples problem anymore, its a political / government issue. and there is a global pandemic of stupid or corrupt politicians.
