Terrified Bird Rescued

Entangled birds are unusual for seal rescuer Naude but are certainly not uncommon globally. The global plastic crisis has reached every part of the planet. Countless birds have fallen victim to ghost fishing gear, plastic packaging, ropes, straps and any other possible type of rubbish. This seagull was lucky and got to live. Most others don't.
We want to thank the individual who reported the entangled bird to us. Most people would have looked the other way and declared this bird "collateral damage." 🦭

I was really more worried about his legs and feet. With blood pooling in the head, the legs would lose sensation and strength. And when you're getting tossed around in the wind with your "shins and knees" constantly hyperextending, it would be super easy to break something. After that would be exhaustion from fighting the wind. Feathers are very good at insulation and temperature regulation.

Many people would say "It's only a gull" but Naude's kindness and empathy shone through. Poor Fury probably had very sore muscles after being left trapped and flapping in the wind. Lovely to see it just took a couple of days rest and food

The only surprise is that the entanglement wasn't fishing line. Thanks to everyone who helped this gull make it back to the wild, from the person who reported a gull in trouble, to the Dreyers who rehabbed the bird at their home to make sure he was strong enough to survive. Well done!🙏

Poor thing. Must be so hungry and dehydrated. Dont worry you will be out of your predicament in no time with Naude on the scene. Having worked as a volunteer on bird station i highly recommend wearing thick gloves. Birds can pinch and bite you rather fiercely.

@Judith Burke: Yeah, i know! Not downplaying that it's painful & can do damage, just saying i'm glad he doesn't have multiple puncture wounds, especially through the neoprene suit sleeves. [One of my hens is a biter. The rest of my flock are sweet as but Helen is... Well: _just a jerk!_ She doesn't _peck_ me. She *bites* -- and, even through my jeans, it _will_ flat get my attention! And her beak has a lot less surface area than a gull!]

Amazing rescue, despite the trying conditions! He'd have been absolutely exhausted fighting to free himself for so long, it'll take a couple of days for him to fully recover. If you ever get another call like this, it may be easier to take a small container you can hold between your knees or strap to the front of your board to take the patient back to shore to complete the entanglement removal. Failing that take something like a small sock (more kid's sock than adult) with you that you can use to hood the bird to help reduce it's panic and keep yourself a little safer from bites!! Great job tho, and another life saved 🙌🏻🙏🏻

Great rescue, Naude! This was certainly some levels harder than cutting a seal free from an entanglement on the beach, for sure! The listing buoy, the wind, the struggling and biting bird, having to secure yourself, the bird AND your tool with only two hands - I am amazed it worked out as well as it did!!
