[Timestamps, Sources and Notes in this comment] Check out the Phylogenetic Tree used in this video series: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vr0ThfPbrzj87DinYiB-r6P2QFog8oyRDPGy7OlF9wk/edit?usp=sharing TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Intro 01:22 - Overview 04:00 - Veloci 08:09 - Gia 12:58 - Gen 17:22 - Io 22:17 - Outro 23:15 - NEXT TIME ON MHE 23:50 - Patreon Sources: Hunter's Encyclopedia G pgs 56-58, 89, 137 *Canonicity* Everything stated in this video is canon and directly based on the above sources, EXCEPT - All Taxonomic names are fanmade, mostly by yours truly. The structure of the Phylogenetic Tree is based on the latest official phylogeny released by Capcom (The MHRise Book one, as of the time I am writing this) - The exact transition from White Velociprey to Giaprey is only a theory, even in universe. White Velociprey were a rare variation that could be found in the hot seasons in MH2 (and G and Freedom 1! Thanks @mh-united) exclusively. When seasons were removed in MHFU, it was repurposed into the Giaprey. So any biological explanation is inherently just a justification for a change that was mechanically motivated first and foremost. - The Old World Raptors have some of the worst cases of "Lore Only" Ecology. For example, Giaprey packs forming into mega packs, or Ioprey dispersing if the Drome dies are mentioned numerous times, but never seen as in-game behaviors (as far as I am aware). - The exact defining features that differentiate Old and New World Raptors are purely observational - the books say nothing of them.

I've got some minor expansions/clarifications: -White Velociprey do make an appearance in the first generation, both in G and Freedom/Portable. -On top of that for Monster Hunter 2, they do actually appear in outside the Warm Season in the Mountains, though you'll need to bait them out by attempting to take Eggs in the Breeding Season. They also appear in the Tower regardless of season. -Strangely, they're not found in the Forest and Hills in Dos, despite the previous two games having them, likely due to their proper ability to shoot ice. -Ioprey do appear in large numbers, alongside Remobra during an Elder Dragon's siege on Dundorma in MH2 (excluding Yama).

I always wondered if it would be possible to tame, or at least befriend, Raptor Wyverns with out a Kinship Stone. They're some of the most social out of all the monsters in Monster Hunter, and we could potentially tame them like we did wolves IRL... Plus, we have evidence of at least ONE tame monster (though a juvenile) in the example of Master Hojo's pet Tetsucabra, known for their aggression and loner tendencies if I remember right.

@@thenerdbeast7375 I just want MH6 to have taming monsters (maybe from collecting egg missions), and your tamed monsters would randomly appear in the locale and help out in hunts for a little bit (tracking and starting turf wars, etc) before leaving. Or, at least, being able to use specific monsters you've captured in the arena, with all the parts you broke off before included.

Oceaniz, if you read this, I hope you know that the amount of effort you put into these videos never goes unappreciated. From all the editing you put into these videos, to the ecological research needed to make these assessments, to even the smaller details like the inclusions of chapters and closed captioning. Everything you do in making these videos is incredibly appreciated, and it helps me to enjoy the biology of these creatures that much more. I have no idea how you manage to produce such high-quality videos as frequently as you do, but I can assure you that we all love it.

I definitely love these Ecology Videos. I really do appeciate the Old Raptors and wish they could get the Gen 5 treatment but oh well. I makes sense since Velocidrome is very weak game wise and would just be a useless spot. Unironically Khezu is very exciting to see next. He is one of my favorite monsters just because of how unsettling he is, and most people dont appeciate that. Also his theme slaps

The raptors, both these guys and the dog wyverns, are my absolute favorite monsters in the game. They are just "little" guys, underdogs who welcome new hunters to the game and I feel sorry for them when apexes like Rathalos kick their butt.

I love your statement about Bird Wyverns being falsely believed as always being at the bottom of the food chain, but we seriously need an apex-level, or even elder-level Bird Wyvern. I know Nightcloak Malfestio is probably an elder-level threat (after all, it can literally turn invisible at will, an ability only shared by Lucent Nargacuga and Chameleos), but it's a Deviant, not its own species. If the Neopterons can get a final boss in their number, then so should the Bird Wyverns. My thought is that would probably be something akin to a gigantic phoenix - something like a souped-up version of the Hellbill, a type of Rare Endemic Life from Rise. Give it the ability to rain blazing feathers down upon the land as it flies, and even use them as ranged weapons akin to the remote-controlled "bits" and "funnels" from the various Gundam franchises. Heck, make it multi-elemental like Alatreon! That said, great video. Makes me appreciate these early-game beasties all the more. Edit: Also, it's easy to dismiss these guys as weaklings, but probably even a single Velociprey would have no trouble killing a family of unarmed civilians with ease. It's only Hunters that can really stand against them easily.

@@Orangelp_LP That's a great idea. It definitely seems like an apex-level Bird Wyvern, plus it has that semi-fantastical ability to convert sunlight into lightning. But if we want an elder level one, I still stand by my "guided feather-shooting elemental phoenix" monster.

Wouldn't the Veloci-Gia transition be the other way around? Some Veloci moved into the mountains, where the mutation became selected for due to highly increasing their fitness? Also if it helps, Gen venom would likely cause the victim to asphyxiate long before they bled out.

8:34 We actually do see animals in the real world that are born with little to no pigmentation but aren't albinos. Unlike albinism, which is the lack of pigmentation due to melanin deficiency, leucism is a lack/reduction of all pigmentation but doesn't always affect the pigmentation of the eyes. Leucistic reptiles tend to be more of a 'pure' white than albino reptiles. Many also have blue eyes instead of pink or red eyes.

16:30 maybe I'm nitpicking, but it seems like even large prey would die within a few minutes from blood loss if a pack was actively ripping into it to feed. Killing by eating is a fairly common way predators end up dispatching prey, as many lack the means to readily kill it first.
