I remember reading a quote from Stan Lee. He always wondered if he could do more than just write comics while other people had careers like doctor or engineers. He then realized that by entertaining he can help people go off the deep end. When you look at it. Hero society is similar. Heroes are placed high like doctors and engineers. Yet entertainers like writers and story tellers aren't seen as good enough to aspire to but according to Stan Lee it keeps people from going off the deep end. The stories keep people same they keep people happy and relieves them of the stress. Gentle indirectly did this by becoming famous he actually helped La brava without even realizing it.
@OkamiG154 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy how Horikoshi continuously creates villains who are really diverse foils of his main character. Each of the main villains (except Overhaul, as he’s more of Shigaraki’s foil) are genuine foils, but each one embodies different aspects of Deku’s personality taken to extremes. Stain embodied Deku’s Hero Worship, particularly of All Might, taken to an obsessive and dangerous extreme. Shigaraki’s early dreams of being a hero marked him for abuse, and he currently bears the burden of being a great man’s protégée, along with a lesser degree of Deku’s obsession with All Might. And Gentle is probably the closest in personality to Deku, with a keen intellect given his creative use of quirk, a desire to be a Hero despite all odds in his youth, a mother he cared for, etc. But most of all, Gentle is a manifestation of Deku’s tenacity and selfless desire to be a hero and symbol, only shown with realistic consequences; basically, what would have happened had Deku met any other Hero besides All Might under that bridge. If Deku met a Hero with no incredible power to give to him. If anything, to pull an overly dramatic line from a different comic book foil pair, Gentle is what Deku could have become after one bad day.
@jeremiahvaleska84644 жыл бұрын

I mean... can you even call Gentle a villain in what he does. He's more like a prankster. One of his 'crimes' was to steal a vintage item (its been a while, i think it was pudding) from a store, that they prized themselves for selling... just to expose the fact that they are being greedy and selling stock that is out of date. So his end goal... was to shame a store.
@DyslecticAttack4 жыл бұрын
I think it's also specified in the manga that all his targets generally were people/businesses like that. They all were left unnoticed after or while doing bad things. He wanted to leave a mark, but he never truly gave up on becoming a hero. At least, that's how I remember it, so it might be wrong. But yeah, (if I am correct in how I remember it) then that means that Gentle named himself a criminal to become a prankster vigilante. He never wants people to be hurt (like during the fight), he mainly wants to expose facts that have gone unnoticed and even left the judgement to others so those things couldn't be played off of his actions. That's also why I'd like to think that La Brava and him got another chance, because they never really comitted any serious crime. (Also, I love their designs, even if it does make the age gap look a bit more than it is and makes the feelings they have look a bit more creepy even though they're both adults and he's only in his early thirties.)

I love how the villains are basically a way to show how to treat those who are, “different.” Don’t shun them! Don’t treat them like outcasts! Don’t just sit aside! Help them! Give them the care they need! This is the difference in Deku. Deku sees that underneath the facade, Gentle might be a little selfish and stubborn, but he’s not irredeemable or even evil. He’s just a hopeless dreamer like him. He just wasn’t given the help Deku was given which is why he stands up for him and doesn’t throw him under the bridge. He gives him a chance at redemption.

Is it just me or is Gentle and La Brava's relationship surprisingly a good relationship. It's established early on that La Brava has stalker tendencies due to her quirk being about love, but because Gentle is kind and caring to a fault, he acts with kindness and understanding to her and instead of just blowing her off he basically makes a point to understand her, and accept her for who she is. Likewise La Brava is obviously very intelligent and observant. Though Gentle has an admittedly great quirk, he is kind of unobservant and single minded. So he messes up a lot. Both parties have something the other needs and they complement each other. Also I really liked this ark for 1 main reason. It was the B-list villain ark. Everybody knows in comic books you have the main Villains like Lex Luthor, Joker, etc, but you also got the weird b-list villains like calendar man, captain boomerang, and most recently stealing the spotlight Kiteman hell yeah. So yeah people can complain all they want that this was filler but honestly it's necessary. You can't have a comic book style superhero without including the everyday schmuck b-list villains.

@@appledough3843 But society can actively deter you from being able to "just work for it". The child of an immigrant who grows up in a neighborhood surrounded by drugs, violence, and the hopelessness of knowing that society isn't looking out for you the way it does for the privileged kid, yet still grows up to make something of himself and escape all that is the exception who beat the odds and saying that the 99 others who couldn't can only blame themselves is clearly incorrect. Bringing it back around to heroes do you think gentle here is a pussy for giving up on his dreams of being a hero becuase society punished him for even trying? Do you think those like Deku who were born without powers but dream of being heroes should always just do so even if it mean being a criminal, most likely losing everyone in thier lives they care about, living constantly on the run, having to race against the police and other heroes to do anything, and still have to figure out a way to legally make money for survival and not to justify claims of being a villain. The people who can beat society are badasses becuase they are exceptions extraordinary enough to do more than a normal person could but for 99.9% of us it is just not feasible so we try to make society better instead of just giving up on it. And bringing about that change is pretty damn heroic.

My friend and I were talking about the last episode earlier today. He said something along the lines of "in this world, it's so hard to become a hero, but it's so easy to become a villain". Now, I read the manga and he's anime-only, but I never noticed that before. Even now at the point the manga is now, where the line is so blurred it's not even about "heroes versus villains" or "good guys versus bad guys" anymore. Without spoiling anything, there's a big over-arcing conflict between what is morally right versus what is lawfully right; people are safe but at the cost of personal freedoms versus people are free but a lot of people may have to die.

The reason that I like Gentle so much is because he was a good guy, studying to be a hero. He thought he could do it, he thought he could follow his dream and didn't realize his own shortcomings. And then he is confronted to reality. It's such a great story and frighteningly real as well. Turns out he is vain and foolish, but in a good way, like many people are. You know, the guy who was good at school and fancied himself as a big deal growing up? I see a lot of Gentle in this story. He was so far upon his ass that he didn't see he wasn't a great hero because he wanted glamour. It's a thing that I can see happening often in MHA world. And the nature of his petty crimes still show that he has a skewed perception of being a hero and he being an youtuber vlog-style is a brilliant way to show his vanity, as if he is on it for the clout, despite still having a sense of justice - as you can see how he chooses his victims. He's very superficial in the pursuit of his dreams, the opposite of the typical shonen main character. And his relationship with La Brava is important because it shows just because he has issues it doesn't mean he is nothing. He still is a good guy in the ending, even though he made mistakes and the story presents a good hopeful ending for him. He still can be useful if he is given the correct opportunity and that message is done with great elegance and nuance IMO. Great video, Oceaniz.

I really cant understand how is he a good character. The general idea behind him is something that its sooo mediocre, in the sense that its something we already saw everywhere, an idea that it is constantly recycled, a good (Pretty dumb) person that because of society ends up in a bad spot, a victim of society while in the interior he is actually a "good" guy, wanting to prove a point and change the whole system, eventually gets destroyed by main character and his ideals again end up in nothing, making him change his mind and maturing and through sentimentalism shit, make the audience feel pity for him. Where have i seen that? Yeah, in almost every mediocre anime. The idea is good actually, being mediocre does not means to be bad, thing is it really depends on how the author uses that idea. Kougami shinya (And every other character in psycho pass) are pretty much the same, good guys turning "bad" guys because of society shit and such, but the difference is that in psycho pass that actually works. Here, it just looks forced. His character is cringy, the whole arc it seems like its just filling material, and to not look that obvious, they add a "villain" to mantain the essence of the show. I honestly, cant understand how its gentle a good antagonist, because thats what he is. I really like the concept of a "villain" that has a more classical and refined aesthetic, i really like that idea, but in Gentle, it just doesnt work. His whole arc felt unnecesary. Stain is a clear example of what Gentle must have been. A guy that his vision about the world and society was corrupted thanks to society itself, all of his acts, even absurd as they were (I mean he was a criminal but decided not to kill certain heroes? LOL) had an objective, to change the society from root, to give a new perspective, to show the world the flaws and "evil" of the what it seems to most a "perfect world", his character and character development is awesome. THATS, what Gentle must have been, and he doesnt.
@ignacioariellopez84914 жыл бұрын
Maybe im losing something on his character, i know a little of character develpment and such, but i dont know everything, i would gladly change my opinion on him, but i just cant see why is he a "well written" character. I really think that the only think that makes him like to people, its because he is a more friendly and likeable character to kids, thats why people love him i guess? But that doesnt make him a good character though.

@@ignacioariellopez8491 because throughout the story we see the side of the heroes and villains gentle is the every man the dream denied we see the side of society most often ignored and thrown away the outcasts whether by community or choice(explained in MVA) he isn't even that bad arguably a vigilante(the places he target our businesses that have done unethical actions(such as selling expired food and lying about the expiration date)). he's a villain in terms of the law but in personality and attitude he's the farthest thing from it he is simply a man that wants to be remembered but has no real commitment whether to the rigorous hardwork and dedication to become a top hero to be forever remembered in society or the ability to break all social taboos in every form and resort to mass destruction and death to be idolized as a infamous villain he's mentally and physically too weak to be a destro all for one or all might. and all of that is intentional.

Basically Deku said it was his toughest fight because he came to the painful realization of how much it hit close to home that Gentle Criminal is extremely likely the kind of person he would’ve eventually turned into if he hadn’t been lucky enough to attract the attention of All Might, he could’ve turned into someone desperate for attention having to resort to a KZbin channel as a cry for help like Gentle Criminal and that is painful and even scary for Deku to think about. The truth has finally dawned on Deku that in hero society where some powers are more socially acceptable then others, no one can get ahead without someone being left behind. In a world where people are pressured to want to be superheroes, many will feel like unfulfilled failures because not everybody can save the day.

The main reason hero academia is becoming one of my favorite animes is because of the focus on themes and character in a shonen structure. This mangaka LOVES his themes, I swear. He uses every opportunity to showcase a specific problem from the world he's created, and establishes great parallels between characters. My favorite has to be the shigaraki and eri one, where eri is the child who got help. The one who stumbled upon two kind students on the street, not just indifferent faces that didn't want to intervene.

Damn, Deku really did become a villain this way by becoming an agent for the flaws of the system crushing the victims. One day he should try to change that, Gentle should have inspired Deku to work for that ideal when he attains greatness. I have a feeling when the Villains inevitably take over it will come down to the every-man, Vigilantes to rise in place of the wounded hero.

Gentle admits that he wants to be a hero to be famous, and although it's clear that he has otherwise genuinely good intentions and has a good heart, considering how even when he decided to go villain, all he did was expose society's ill wills, knowing the kind of person Stain is, I don't think he would've heard anything beyond "he wants to be a hero to be famous"

As someone with Mental disabilities (ADD, Anxiety, Autism), the case of La Brava's lack of structural support for her non-typical power feels EERILY similar to the lack of systemic support for neurodiversities in certain areas, which could be accidental but if it isn't, it's a *genius* move on Horikoshi's part, especially in my case with Autism, kinda feels like the system's only understanding of neurodiversity is that some folks learn faster or slower, or sometimes can't pay attention very well, when in many cases, it's MUCH more complicated than that

Because of this arc im rooting and begging for the league of villains to change/restart the world. People in society are only in it for themselves. Even the most kind and hard working people are built out of the suffering of others. Just one small act of ignorance is enough cast someone out of their dreams unequally. People who don't do anything or has to seize an opprotunity are portrayed as evil as the league of villains. I love the world building of My Hero Academia, not its fandom.

What kills me the most is La Brava hitting Izuku to try to get him to release Gentle while crying about how much he means to her, how good he is, and how much she'd die without him - meanwhile Izuku is staring at her like a kicked puppy, so utterly confused and as if all of a sudden realizing the weight of what he's done, and how very unlike the villains he's used to these two are. It's emotional to realize that Gentle & La Brava are very similar to how All Might came along to Izuku and saved him by reaching out to him, and how they continually save each other with their close bond, except that for Gentle it happened far after the point where he still could have hypothetically become a hero (or at least, not a villain). But I like to think that Izuku saw La Brava's desperate need to not lose Gentle and related it to his own desperate need to not lose/his love for All Might; alternatively, he might have seen Eri in La Brava in that moment, another young girl who was going to be all alone and was unable to smile. Either way, the point is that _he's_ the reason he's suddenly upset these two people who really have not done anything wrong, and aren't even planning to do something that terrible, and as a hero who is supposed to save peoples' hearts, from an outside perspective, Izuku suddenly appears more like the villain instead, no matter how untrue that is. I just wish the manga focused more on his thoughts about Gentle & La Brava after the concert, because it doesn't really have any lasting impact on him or change his way of thinking in the long-term (but unfortunately, this is my biggest problem with many of the characters and events in the series).
@raec54264 жыл бұрын
Excellent analysis video regarding this underrated and underappreciated arc! You have some of the best MHA analysis videos! :) People say this series is so simple yet miss a lot of what can be taken out from the story. lol Unfortunate how many people brush this arc as 'filler' when it has such great narrative value to the core themes. MHA is about what it means to be a hero so this arc offered another perspective of this meaning through Gentle aiming to be his own type of hero in a sense against the society that did not accept him and be La Brava's hero. Also with Deku fighting for his friends and Eri's smile since "Heroes don't just save lives, they save hearts too." You don't need a battle of life or death every time to be a hero or show stakes. The arc may not have the 'hype factor' that people expected with a shonen story, but the narrative offered in this arc is unlike others. Gentle, La Brava and Deku's clash with them served as a great spotlight on the issues present in hero society in a different way to expand the world building. I loved reading this arc in the manga as my favorite fight of Deku looking so cool in action. The action panel art was so awesome so I am realllyyyy hoping the anime will deliver it justice with this conclusion of this fight to make it resonate with others like it did in the manga. Pleaseee Bones deliver! lol

Even if in this world we don’t have powers, I felt strongly connected to La Brava. That I was let down by people who were supposed to take care of me. That my value only derived from my capabilities. That being my ability to learn quickly. I was out on pedestal and pushed off once I slowed down. But I’m not here to tell my life story, I’m here to say thank you for helping me understand better. As someone approaching Gentle's age this pair and arc hit me harder than anything before it in MHA. Particularly "Am I just going to grow older, poor and pathetic?" was something I never expected to get out of this show. That coupled with how his fight against Deku is literally shot as if Deku is the antagonist, with cinematography and music swelling as La Brava desperately tries to save Gentle's dream, it was just overwhelmingly emotional and gave me hope that there's much more than DBZ-inspired power scaling in MHA's future.

Its with arcs like these where we are able to see how talented and how much effort an author puts in to his work. Making a good story without emegeeh epic high adrenaline stakes and action is NOT EASY,AoT uprising arc comes to my mind,widely rejected for not having anything generic viewers/readers thought the story was about (epic big stake fights against brainless titans) fighting for the sake of fighting gets boring real quick (dragon ball z/super being prime examples of it).
