The start of Operation of Al-Aqsa Flood on Oct. 7 was accompanied by a deluge of Israeli propaganda. Months later, the most outrageous of these claims of Hamas atrocities have been debunked, but the damage has already been done. On the 8th. October I watched an Israeli woman who was invited to come on to the BBC and give her evidence of what she said her sister saw during the attack. She was extremely agitated , to the point of hysterical, and went on to describe how her sister saw a Hamas fighter put his hand in to a heavily pregnant Israeli woman's vagina, pull out her unborn baby and smash it against a wall. Despite this story being made up in order to discredit Hamas, the BBC failed to offer up a disclaimer the next day and apologize for being naive and not waiting until someone had fact checked her story.

As an infantryman of many firefights in the Vietnam War, knowing that the shock of battle destroys sexual desire and even the want to eat, I wrote the NY Times expressing that I saw lies in their rape article “Screams Without Words…” by Jeffrey Gettleman, Anat Schwartz, and Adam Sella. What civilians don’t know is that rapes do occur in war, but never in the heat of battle, especially of such high intensity. For instance, in WWII, thousands of German women were raped in the Russian capture of Berlin but not by the attacking troops; the following troop waves after the battle were the offenders. In a battle with that many casualties, I am certain that no Hamas fighter pulled his pants down to use the bathroom. That close to death, the only woman a combatant would think about would be his mother!

Exactly what I'd been thinking. The Al-Qassam fighters had a specific military operation to perform in a very limited period of time, before the IDF responded - to take out military and intelligence installations and to take as many hostages as possible. There was simply no time or, I suspect, opportunity to carry out all these time-consuming atrocities. Also, re the Soviet army in WWII. I've heard that several times. The first invading army actually warned German civilians that the second wave would be brutal and to get out while they could. My high school German teacher had been among those that the Soviet Army warned. Her family got out in time and made it to the American zone.

I was in a corner store one night when a customer, raging at the clerk over being cheated, pulled a revolver and emptied 6 rounds into the clerk’s chest. Due to the argument being lengthy, the line had a backup to the point that I was about the 15th person at the back of the line when the shooting occurred. At the first shot, except for me and another guy, the line bolted in screams for the door and literally knocked down and trampled over an old lady on her way in. In that shock state, they were not able to see the grandmotherly person because their physical and mental systems had shut down all functions except those for survival. I am sure this included sexual disfunction that night, as was in my case. That incident was nothing compared with some of the firefights I had been in or what occurred on Oct 7: there was just one gunman with an empty pistol whose intention was to kill one man. Those civilians did not have to face automatic weapons rounds zipping past, tank rounds smithereening everything to atoms, and chariots of death in the form of Apache helicopters grinding away above. Even though I had been conditioned to all of that, when I got home, I could not eat because I had seen a human being violently and unnecessarily lose his life! I had to get drunk before I got back my appetite, and I can assure you it was the same for the others in line. Does this help?

totally agree. Its crazy to believe these resistance fighters had time or motivation to pull down their pants and begin raping. Also, as a social worker who knows a lot of fight or flight responses, which these resistance fighters would be in 'fight' - you know that he central nervous system, the body, just doesn't function that way. Anyone who hears that and believes it needs to imagine themselves in this scenario, with a weapon, maybe on a motorbike, looking for hostages to capture, and then imagine themselves attempting a rape or mass rape, it's just not going to happen physiologically. But Israel wants you to believe these people are monsters who have different physiology than humans. That's the point. Also you're correct about the Russian raping of women in Germany - 1000's - but yes, after the initial fighting. US soldiers do it across the middle east (and in Vietnam) also after initial combat.

In my town Hamilton Ontario there is a cash prize awarded to the elementary school teacher who teaches her class the most about the Holocaust. It is called "the Helen Fairclough prize" I have four grandchildren in this school system and would like for them to be either taught about all attrocities against human kind, or nothing at all. After a few days since October 7th, I've started to doubt everything Israel claims, even though I have no direct connection to Palestine apart from feeling empathy for them as fellow humans. This skepticism doesn't bode well for Israel. The growing distrust, resentment, and fear won't benefit them in any way; it's hard to overlook the inhumanity they've displayed. While they may not realize or care about it now, being accustomed to escaping accountability, they'll inevitably face consequences in the long run.

Thank you both. So informative. The New York Times needs to put out a front page correction and an explanation of the story and their stance on it. Then an apology. It will never happen, but they obviously thought the weight of their masthead, followed up with slanderous rape apologist accusations, could carry them through.
