All right, y'all. I got a bad feeling that this comment section might get a little...transphobe-y. And in my Alien Ocean, we don't let bigots in here, we drown them. I'm going to be doing my best to delete/block transphobic comments, but I'm only one person, I'm afraid. So if you are an ally to the queer community, or are a member of it yourself and feel like you got the bandwidth to handle this, I could use your help! First off, if you see any transphobic comments, DON'T REPLY TO THEM. That is what they WANT. They want your attention, they want you to engage with them. They might even claim they're "asking questions in good faith," but they are NOT. They are NOT looking to better understand trans and intersex people and they are NOT looking to get their minds changed about the queer community. It's all BS, don't fall for it! Instead, please report the comment. Trying to shout down bigots from their platform doesn't shut them up, but yanking the platform out from underneath them does. If you feel you MUST respond to transphobic comments, don't respond directly to the commenter! Instead, address the potential audience who might be reading their comments. Say something like, "This commenter said [Bad Thing] about transgender/intersex people, but that is mis/disinformation. What is ACTUALLY true about trans/intersex people is [X, Y, Z]." But again. We're gonna try to keep that to a minimum. We're gonna report comments instead. OK? OK. And then FINALLY. I normally try to come up with a cute, quippy little message in my pinned comment to get people to come check out my Patreon, but instead, I'll just say this: these videos take A LOT of time, energy, and money to make. So if you can, please support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/theoctopuslady or, if you'd like to make a one-time donation, I just recently set up a Ko-Fi: www.ko-fi.com/theoctopuslady Happy Pride Month, everyone. I love you all, very much. Except for you bigots. I don't love you at all.

Cosmetic surgery should never be done without a person's consent. Non-consensual cosmetic genital surgery done on minors, especially neonatal infants, is horrifying and it's terrible that many hospitals are still doing it. Love how they say they're protecting children from the 'butchering' of children and yet look at what they do to intersex children.
@animelovergirl8461
@animelovergirl8461 Жыл бұрын
Talking about them saying that they want to "protect children", they kind of are the type that when "educating" their children, their explaination tends to be vague. For example, a parent telling their girl to not give up her virginity until marriage, but there was not a lot of explainations about how physical intimacy works. Which the girl may end up getting pregnant without knowing that she has done it. And when her parents find out, they disown her (or do something that is terrible to her) and blame her for not preserving her virginity when she was NOT taught how it actually works!!!!!! If the girl was taught about physical intimacy, then she would've been aware about it. Aside from that, parents that say that to their daughters like what I wrote are obviously old fashion people, but I think the most important part that they should discuss (to both boys and girls) are s*xual predators, r@pists, and along those lines since those types of people are the red flags.

@anactualfork: Not that this should be surprising to anyone who pays attention. As a Trans Non-Binary person myself, I really must thank you for the amount of research you must have done. This is a better explanation of trans & intersex matters than I have even heard from some trans people themselves. You've really outdone yourself, and I have the utmost respect for the amount of time you must have spent researching, and the firm defensive stance you have taken for my community. Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I also really appreciate how clear you make it that there is so much more to be said. These are matters that resist concise explanation, and truly a full understanding of gender is beyond the scope of this video, and rather than trying to pack some truncated explanation in here, you give a very good summary with clear indication that there's a lot more going on. I'm somebody who is known for talking about gender for hours and hours (enough that its become an in-joke), and the idea that a KZbin video could ever truly explain gender and all its implications is silly. Your short and concise explanation of non-binary folks did a fantastic job of leaving people wide open to understanding us, because gosh do I see so many people summarizing it as some sort of "third gender" all over the place. Non-binary isn't a description of something that I am, it's just an explanation of what I am not: a man or a woman. And absolutely, trans matters are matters for trans people, not politicians. Medical matters, or social / identity matters relevant to the trans individual and those they choose to involve. And also, I want to recognize your statement on the importance of humanities. As somebody who came from a STEM background and for the longest time held a similar contempt for humanities, gosh I cannot stress how delusional and destructive that was. There's this dangerous elitist culture in STEM which really needs to be addressed and deconstructed, and I really appreciate your statement on the matter, even if you only had it on screen for a handful of frames. As somebody who studied computer science (and has since become a software engineer), this is exactly how we keep ending up with racist machine learning systems, it's because the people designing these systems don't understand the social climate of the world and how it has shaped all of our data sets, and by extension our learning models. Anyway, to reiterate: thank you so much for your extremely well-researched video, and I have the utmost respect for your dedication to covering this in a ethical manner, in a video about clownfish no less! You have shown yourself to be somebody I would gladly include in discussions about gender any day, and I consider myself lucky to have you as an ally.

God damn that’s a good point. I’m in school for CS rn and I was writing a paper about what would happen when/if AI gains true emotions. I saw LOTS of ai racism in the stuff I was researching and it didn’t even occur to me that social sciences would help with that. There was a thing about how psychologists and screenwriters are consulted for the development of AI assistants but it looked like it was just for the “friendliness” factor. I do wonder if there is a way to train AI without a ridiculous amount of human oversight without it turning into hitlerbot 2.0
@meoilzealon
@meoilzealon 10 ай бұрын
@@justkittensbeingkittens5892 it's really fascinating! Although this problem really crops up in machine learning models due to biases in data, for example if you ask a lot of generative AI for images of people who are black, it has a habit of creating something that recognizably looks like them, but is also much lighter skinned, by nature of the majority of the training data which it bases people drawing off of is of white people. The ai itself doesn't understand race, nor does it understand what a person is. AI taking on emotions is also very complicated, because most of what the public sees described as AI is not really intelligent, nor does it "think," it's really all just huge equations and linear algebra. A text generating AI may be able to seemingly carry a conversation, and may even respond as if it is experiencing emotion, however it isn't, it's just a construct made from human text responses, so it will do something that resembles what a human might say. That's why stuff like chat GPT fumbles some strange basic stuff, and they can't really understand real world concepts, just parrot descriptions that have been provided by humans in the data it is trained on. Chat GPT doesn't learn about real world concepts when it is provided explanations of them, it just learns that those sequences of words are related to sequences of words which describe those things. An actual intelligence produced artificially would be something which did process and understand based on stimulus, which while we could probably make something like that, there's very little commercial application for that, because humans already do that just fine, and a facsimile that can fool a human is a perfectly acceptable substitute.

Its just that because they already have made it a politcal matter that causes so many lgbtq+ people to suffer bigotry, to fix it you aso have to address it in the opposite direction. I just want to add that the use of Hermaphrodite for humans was, at one point, the proper medical terminology. There is, unfortunately, a long trend of assholes turning proper medical terminology into slurs, which means NEW terms are created to replace the old ones, and the cycle is continued. As someone who has gone "wait, when did the preferred terminology from Hermaphrodite to Intersex change???" I have looked into this, and as best I can tell, Intersex as a term was coined in the 50's, iirc, in Europe but didn't start gaining ground in the US until the mid to late 90's. Also, I strongly oppose sex selection surgeries for Intersex kids and ESPECIALLY infants. Now, if a kid is old enough to say they are male or female, and the surgery is supporting that, I can agree with that. But docs operating on infants have a 50/50 chance of being wrong, and those are bad odds. And in a world where XY females and XX males exist? You can't just go by the DNA.

What you are doing by making this video is exactly what trans and intersex people need an I cannot thank you enough. Both are a tiny fraction of already small minorities and need things like this to get through what's happening in the political world and it's use of misinformation to achieve it's goals, namely powe I guess. There's just not enough of us to have political influence on our own, we need the help of cisgender people and with videos like this one out there you are making it more possible and doing it in a really fun way. It's always funny to me that a lot of people try to advocate against queer identity through some weird justification of childhood "innocence". Like somehow a child seeing a gay person on the street might make them get depression because their cheery disposition has now been taken away from them. It also goes to show most people who advocate against queer identity can't seem to understand the difference between sexual aspects and the romantic aspects of a relationship. Their mind only focuses on the sex and since they function off of the concept that sex is morally wrong or degenerate, the thing they can only view through the framework of sex has to be morally wrong and degenerate. Plus the concept of childhood innocence really deprives children the proper parenting they deserve. The automatic assumption that children can do no wrong or think about anything wrong is a very silly one that no half decent parent truly subscribes to. Everyone understands that children are fully capable of being little shits and some of them enjoy being a little shit. However, that doesn't stop people from then spreading the lie they don't even truly believe in to further their very misguided view of how the world should be. Just remember folks, if seeing gay people can turn someone gay, why wouldn't it work in the other way and those recently turned gay people should then turn straight because of our hetero normative society.

As an NB and transfem person, I really just want to say thank you so much, it's always such a breath of fresh air to hear cisgender and heterosexual people (assuming that you are, sorry if that's incorrect) care sincerely about our survival and our rights, instead of going 'it's just politics' or 'both sides are a bit right' kind of rhetoric to wave struggles off of their mind. I do have a remark to make though, it's just that your approach to the topic seems to be pretty trans-medicalist,- considering that transitioning is mostly or exclusively a medical process, usually paired with the idea that transidentity is a neurological condition/mental disorder. And while we do take medical steps, transition is as much a phisiological process as it is a social and legal one: changing name, using different pronouns, changing our gender expression to match or approach the gender norms of another gender through clothing, makeup, jewellery, language, hobbies, and a ton of other changes. It doesn't change your point, it's nobody's but our own business what we do with our own body, but more importantly, what we do with our gender identity in all its parts, and even just our identity as an individual as a whole and how we decide to present ourselves. Anyways thank you so much for your work, and for being compassionate and curious enough to listen to us and defend us

Hi @Aeroneffe! Thank you for this feedback! I did find myself wondering if I was focusing too much on the medical aspect of transitioning, but thought my comment at the end about how trans people can transition legally and socially, made it clear that was not the only way to transition. Looking back on it now, though, it was not! I should have made that section longer than a few sentences. If someone who doesn't know a lot about transgender people saw this video, I could easily see them thinking that transgender people are only "really" transgender if they seek medical treatment, and my comment about different ways of transitioning could easily go over their head. Petition to start replacing "both sides are a bit right" with "I don't know enough about the subject so I'll shut up" because it's at least honest.

This is great on so many levels, not only because it's a video about clownfish which I love, but you also make it abundantly clear that your community is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ people. As a queer non-binary person, it warms my heart when creators I love show their support. Thank you ❤

Honestly. Ive never thought my self transphobic or anything but after watching this video I realized I have been thinking a lot like a transphobe. I mostly came here to say thank you for clearing things up. You have completely changed my prospective on that whole subject. I also agree. The old farts in the government should just give people the medical care they need and leave the subject of LGBTTTQQIAA out of politics. Frankly what people want to do with there own emotions and body's is there briskness and no one elses. Thank you Octopus Lady!

Lack of information and mis/disinformation are the breeding grounds for hate, anyone can have weird ideas about something if they don't know any better. That's why education is so important, not only in school but throughout life and you're a perfect example of that. Keep learning dude, love to see it.

Same here, I wasn’t aware. I never used the word with negative intent, I just never knew about the term “intersex” at the time. I’ve long since changed my vocabulary, but was never aware it could have been offensive till now. Please retroactively pardon my ignorance.

I didn’t know either, and I’ve used it as a point with bigots that scientifically and religiously (medically, etc.) sex is clearly not straightforward/binary. I completely forgot that intersex was a word bc nobody ever talks about it. I love our Octopus Lady

You are one of the "lucky 10 thousand" according to xkcd an astute webcomic. They praise people for learning something new rather than ridicule them and say on average that ten thousand people in the USA learn something new each day. [If you do not live in the USA I apologize but this is the summary of his comic and I bet there is a statistic for the rest of the world but I don't know it right now.] BTW for Octopus Lady: as a response to the video I hope there are lawyers that protect each baby that is threatened/forced to have genital surgery. This LGBTQIA+ issue is so upsetting because members of my community on average more likely to be trans-- I'm terrified by all this and I'm of usually avoidant when it is discussed but this video really helped made it less painful. Thanks OL!

your channel never ceases to make me feel so safe, loved, and understood! this year has been terrifying. i live in a trans refugee state, yet im afraid of going outside since im visibily trans. so, i dont go out much. leaving me with a lot of free time. i focus a lot of my time on sciences. and honestly, your channel made marine biology become one of my top favorite sciences next to astronomy and psychology! and honestly, i love joking about how my transness is "linked" to my love of marine biology lmao. idk if you know this, but the ikea shark Blahaj, is kind of a trans mascot due to its colors matching the trans flag. and although it started as a joke, sharks and many other marine animals really help me on days im most dysphoric. being trans can really make you feel alien at times. so being able to compare myself to animals like sharks who are also seen as alien, and demonized, is really nice. that was a lot of words to say; thank you for the content you make. thank you for creating a safe space where i know im not going to be judged for being different, but instead, ill be embraced for it. your channel has meant a lot to me over the past couple months ive been watching. your videos have helped me get through some really scary, difficult times. and i cannot express how important people like you are to this world. thank you for everything you do, stay awesome
