Am I the only one who thinks exclusives for VR hardware is dumb? I see it as being like PC monitor or keyboard exclusives and it goes against the openness of PC gaming.
@rogue1446

my thoughts exactly, I'm glad that I am no longer an early adopter, I would have gotten the rift it I were an early adopter still. Just looking at the platforms these vr headsets offer is really restrictive. People are limited big time...that being said htc vive seems like the better option for pc gaming.
@GruntyGame

Luke Kelly I do agree with you. I however was referring to how the Rift has games you can't legally play on the Vive and vice versa.
@rogue1446
@rogue1446 8 жыл бұрын
Luke Kelly Indeed, be nice if we lived in a reality that more options(companies offering vr headsets to all games) was offered to us. This reminds me of the time that gpu companies offer only one api(such as directx and opengl); 3dfx I believe, if my memory recalls correctly was the first company that offered all api's on one card.

Exclusives of any kind are stupid. Whether it be games on consoles or VR games. I have good hardware, I don't want to buy more unnecessary hardware just to play a handful of games that are exclusive to 1 platform. It's also extremely stupid from a developers point of view. Sony's Naughty Dog are a good example. The last of us and uncharted could have net the company several billion more in sales revenue if they also released on PC and Xbox. As long as people support these kinds of practices they will continue to exist though. Imagine if they did this with movies or music. You have to buy a certain blu-ray player to watch certain movies or buy a certain i-pod to listen to certain music. It's just fucking dumb.
@GruntyGame

Mojo Jojo I do understand exclusives for console due to their different architecture. But the VR headsets run on extremely similar software and hacks are created to make them cross compatible anyway so there's no excuse for VR. On that note however you can now play Oculus games on the Vive. Yay.

There are so many mistakes in this video. Goddamit you dont need the sync cable to connect the base stations. They connect wirelessly as long as they can see eachother. The sync cable is only there for the rare times when the stations can't see eachother.

As far as price goes. People pay way more for surround sound audio systems with 7 speakers they have to hook up around a room. And that is just immersive audio ffs. Try thinking about the perspective with what you are actually getting for the money. The same goes for monitors. Thinking of buying 3 physical monitor for $1500? Just get a VR system where you can make as many floating virtual monitors as you want for half the price. I can't believe people still can't put VR into it's correct perspective with what it offers compared to what people have been spending buttloads of money otherwise.

Three small points of correction for the Vive. 1. it comes with in ear buds, 2. Vive software is not needed 3. the sync cable for the light houses are not needed.
@ABQSentinel
@ABQSentinel 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was going to point this out too. The sync cables for the light houses are only there in the even you have syncing issues between them. Also, a lot of people are speculating that Oculus might offer their version of roomscale VR at some point in the future. I find this unlikely since true room scale requires a more than just one camera or lighthouse. The Vive was designed around roomscale, and it was designed to be scalable (more lighthouses in a large room, etc.), which is why the lighthouses only require power. The Oculus camera thingy has to be plugged into a USB port. So how are you going to get another camera on the opposite side? You would have to have some sort of powered USB hub to facilitate a long USB cord, of course, then you have the cord itself to deal with as it either runs obtrusively across the floor, or necessitates some sort of wall and ceiling routing. The bottom line is that, the Vive can do everything the Rift can do, but the Rift cannot replicate the features of the Vive. So even if you only think you'll do seated/standing VR... why limit your future options?

excellent video, very informative. I was considering of getting Vive, I can definitely afford it. However it still feels somewhat like a gimmick to me. The games out there look more like VR demos (please correct me if I am wrong). I am just not sure what I am going to do with it past few hours of goofing around. Are there anything good worth dozens of hours? Also this is just the beginning of VR age. If it takes off, and I hope it will, new hardware will be upgraded on yearly basis.

Also Just want to point out that Oculus has never confirmed that the FOV is 110 degrees and measurements have shown that it is probably less. Owning both I rarely notice horizontally the difference in FOV but vertically you can see the vive has a fairly siginificant advantage. Either way the rifts FOV is almost certainly under 110 degrees.

So i thought i'd check out the other VR sets that are on the market and i just don't know what to tell him to invest in and this vid hasn't persuaded me either way. Personally i'd wait and see what the Playstation VR is going to be like especially if you have a PS4, but my bro don't so i'm a little stumped. I completely agree with you about the vive looking much bulkier than it actually is. I have both and I received my rift first, and based on just seeing it on peoples heads/ shots of it I thought it looked huge. Its almost like an optical illusion. I would say its smaller even from the IR sensors on the front to the foam interface than the rift. I was really surprised about that. In terms of weight the vive is heavier but when I hold them both by the top strap or in my hand its hard to notice a difference.

To anyone thinking of going with VR: don't even think about playing a first person shooter with them. They are only suited to games where you're sitting down or when you can walk freely around the level. CV1 owner speaking from experience here. I walk around my ships in Elite Dangerous and walk around the planet in Farlands (Oculus tracks room scale just fine), but when I played an fps with the Xbox controller I just about died. Something about your body moving without you moving it is VERY disorienting. Luckily I play mostly racing sims and flight/space sims. Try one for yourself and see what I mean.

Oculus should have never released their platform fragmented. Picture Xbox/PS4 saying, "Hey, numb nuts. We're gonna sell you our system, but we're gonna sell you the controller 6 months later mmmkay". That is my bone of contention with Oculus. They could have avoided the whole shipping fiasco and bad blood built up by building stock and at least having an intact platform upon release. That being said I cannot frikken wait for my Rift to get here. My Fantasy game would be Blizzard totally recreating Diablo 1 from the ground up for VR, with the Touch controllers.

None of that. they simply didn't have the time. They were not ready for mass production but they were blindsided by HTC/Valve's announcement to release Vive. If they didn't act immediately and release the Rift they will be left behind and will never be able to compete. So they opted to release the Rift without the Touch controllers.

I own a Vive, and while I was impressed with the immersion it provides, there are a few very prominent issues with it. 1.) It's extremely cumbersome to use. I don't even really use mine anymore because I just don't feel like dealing with it. 2.) FOV is 110 degrees at _best_, but usually less. Furthermore, even if you technically get the full 110 degrees, there's a very narrow "sweet spot" where the image is sharp. Deviate from this sweet spot, and things get too blurry to be of any use. 3.) Tracking is still hit or miss. Has issues with mirrors and reflective surfaces, as well as direct sunlight. 4.) You NEED a good deal of space to use it if you're going for roomscale VR, otherwise the chaperone lines will constantly be visible and break your immersion. 5.) The games are pretty basic. Think glorified Wii games. Some are nothing more than blatant cash grabs. 6.) It's $800+ that I really can't recommend spending at this juncture.

As far as "limited" content I am not sure I agree with that.There is after market software which makes VR gaming possible across a wide spectrum of games that aren't necessarily VR optimized. I have tried them both and either way you go be prepared for an experience like you've never had (or at least while sitting at your desk). I personally am a little fed up with some of the reviewers in KZbin etc..., who are just never pleased no matter what new technologies come along. I love 4K as much as anyone, but the experience is invigorating and well worth it even at current specs. Another point missed by many is the potential to simulate training environments. I will be buying the Oculus and will be using it for flight training. If I can save 5-10 hours over the course of my training utilizing the benefits of VR then the Oculus will have been worth double the price I pay for it. I also like that Oculus isn't forcing the motion controllers to be purchased with the rift. I don't see myself using them in a "Room Scale" sort of way. It looks fun, but honestly going to be racing and flying for me and if I change my mind I can buy the controllers later. But, ultimately both of these devices are going to be offering a new experience or a lot of people for what I feel is a reasonable price.

I have no idea why people keep saying it takes 40 minutes to an hour to set up the Vive; it took me 10 minutes to set up the brackets for the lighthouses from start to finish, the rest is plug and play, scanning your area and installing the software another 15 minutes.

like most journalists, you're not among the group of people that will appreciate VR the most; sim racers. and flight sim pilots. for us, VR is a game changer. things like oculus cardboard and gear VR are not serious headsets so I don't think comparing them helps consumers understand how much better the rift and vice are. Its just a shame you didn't mention the premier racing sim: Iracing. rift cv1 is selling really really well among that niche community. VR going mainstream isn't really neccesary is it? vr headsets are selling incredibly well. VR headsets serve the specialist crowds within the gaming community (like sim racers) much more than your average "pc gamer". I'll be using mine daily just for Iracing alone. elite dangerous once in a while too. and of course some scary spooky stuff. just my 2 cents of course.

I'd definitely go with the Vive as of now. Oculus will need to have superior controllers and other features if they're gonna win me over. I like that I can wear my Turtle Beach Elite 800x headset with the Vive and not be stuck with the Oculus earphones built into the head harness. I love that with the Vive I'd be able to draw my own room scale, adjust for my glasses, have multiple devices to track the headset/controllers instead of one, and a few other things. I hear the Oculus is more comfortable for extended gaming. GREAT ADVICE saying that we should wait for further development and such. I'm a person that likes to go buy something as soon as I become interested in it. I'd have little problem saving up $2,000+ to build a VR-ready PC, and I don't even own or know anything about PC. But patience is definitely going to pay off for everyone interested in VR

Umm, you don't have to use the sync cable for the base stations. Mine work fine without the sync cable since they can sync wirelessly. Also, they do come with headphones (earbuds), albeit not very good ones. Finally, you don't have to install HTC software. Most people who purchase a Vive likely already have Steam, and Steam VR is pretty much all that's required software-wise. You need to get your facts straight before misrepresenting a product and providing a very misinformed comparison of two products which you obviously know little to nothing about.

The "Touch" controllers are a whole lot better than the ones you get with "Vive". They fit in the hand much more comfortably, and all the buttons are all in very natural positions

You guys know they're modding games to work with VR right? I couldn't care less about any of these "games", but because we now have a mod for Skyrim, and even one for the Dolphin emulator, I totally want one.

I get what you're saying another reason why I wanted PSVR is because it's easier to set up have you seen videos on setting up HTC Vive it is a headache with the PlayStation just connect a few wires and you're done

the experience on both is vastly different though. VIVE feels more fully featured, and has more capabilities, but also more complex. PSVR is not as impressive and vive or even the rift, but should be easier for the console plebs to afford and setup.

psvr uses oled "RGB" per pixel display which gives NO pixel on the screen at all. Sony will push the VR market once they sell millons of units. If those gimmick Sony Move controller can sell 15 millions and im sure psvr can do it easily. In 2017 millions of psvr owners will complain to big game developers and after then we will see all kinds of big AAA games coming out for psvr and pc. Sony will be our hero for VR fans. By the way, i owned the Vive!

does Rift & Vive glasses friendly for those wear glasses ??! ...

The general consensus is that the Vive is much more friendly towards glasses users (it even has little notches on the sides for glass to slot theough.) Apparently people have been getting their glasses scratched on the rift.

I have tested phone VR and VIVE. I think Vive experience is better but the price tag of PC VR is hi for someone. I needed to use 1500e to upgrade my pc. so 2.x ke total. but thinking about games. I liked very much these roomscale arcade because you have to avoid ammos. nice way to avoid gym. Also VR horror experience was off the limits. I didin't find any good game for mobile VR but someone give good ideas that I will try to do with Unity. Creating content was pretty esasy with Vive. because Steam provided good library for controls etc with few bugs. I have tried fow time google cardboard library and it also work fine but not thath good and if you used too hi models then you got motion sickness (fps drop under 75 fps)
