This is incredible, you can't even imagine how many videos I've seen trying to grasp this concept and ended up feeling dumber and dumber. This is just straightforward and clear. Thank you so much

This was really helpful for understanding how to feel these unorthodox meters in a very simple manner. Hope you make more elaborate videos on odd time signatures and how to use it in writing songs.

Great synopsis on how to simplify the feel of these odd time signatures without counting every beat. Thanks Marc!

'We're Only In It For the Money' is a superlative album, hope a lot of people watching this learn the song. And good advice, these kinds of rhythms more often than not are best felt as having 2 discrete units (short and long) - this is quite a common method of feeling rhythm in the Balkans (listen to Bulgarian drummer Stoyan Yankoulov, very great player) especially.

Nice video, in the last few weeks I started experimenting with odd time signatures and this was really useful. Are you ever gonna make a lesson about sweeping with fingers on bass?
@triplehood5 жыл бұрын
Nice, I actually developed the same system for myself without even knowing it. I had some trouble learning how to play "Money" by Pink Floyd. I tried tapping the entirety of the 7/8 bars but that became really tiring really quickly as well as distracting. I then took the lesson I learned from David Ellefson, namely that a 4/4 bar and a 2/4 at half the tempo of the 4/4 bar are the same thing, and applied it to the 7/8 bars in Money. In other words, I only tapped my foot to the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th beats of the bar and presto ... no more issue learning the song.

Steven Wilson does loads like this. I think of songs like Holy Drinker where Nick Beggs has that great riff during the flute solo. Or dream theater Dance of Eternity. Thanks for this vid Mark!
@talkingbasslessons5 жыл бұрын
Yup. Steven Wilson has loads of it as does Dream Theater. Pretty much any prog band over the last 50 years. Yes, Genesis, Rush, King Crimson, Gentle Giant etc.

Thank once again Mark, odd time signitures in degestable formate, prevuously I have used memetics in spoken form, however this was in my drumming days (samba bloco, not kit). Cheers, I like that you are visiting Frank Zappa, musical maverick that he was! 😁🤩😍🤩😁

Great video. Maybe my favorite from your channel. What genre of music are you most likely to find these types of odd signatures?

Brilliant stuff! Counting 5 while playing a slip jig in 9/8 might be a bit counterproductive though!
@talkingbasslessons5 жыл бұрын
That 9/8 would be compound time. Stupid name for it really but it means it's counted in threes. In that case you'd better counting triplet time in 3/4. You can also count 6/8 as 2/4 and 12/8 as 4/4.
