From someone who did a lot of contact LARPing when they were younger, spiral wrapping with tape tends to harden up the foam even if you try not to crush the foam. Vertical strips tend to keep it softer.

The coolest trick I found for making a foam lightsaber is wrapping a big steel bolt in duck tape until it fits tightly into the bottom of your handle to act as a counterweight to make your blade feel almost weightless. Also if you use a pair of cheap white leggings as blade covers you can color it with permanent markers and rubbing alcohol to get really cool effects

Use the tape length wise down the blade you use less tape and it doesnt compress the tape like torque wrapping does.

Worth noting, authentic SCA style would be a solid rattan stick wrapped in tape with no padding LOL SCA required full armor though. That said, this is how we made boffers for kids to play with.
