Looks good, Odin!!! #ThisIsTheWay! I like your tip for getting PVC to be more rigid at 6:32 : using something inside it to strengthen it! I used a smaller length of PVC wrapped in tape every foot or so to do just that when I made my "Rey's Staff" from Star Wars: The Force Awakens! I'm sure wood would have worked better but the PVC was good enough and didn't add much weight.

Oh nice! The wood did add a little weight, but over all the spear just has a satisfying heft to it now. It's still light enough to carry around all day.

Rotary tool is definitely the best first step into making. Lots of different uses, very versatile. But... God damn do I want a belt sander!!
@OdinMakes3 жыл бұрын
Belt sanders are great! Grab a low cost one, if the material you are working with is softer (not steel, or oak) than a lower cost budget sander will get you going for a while. This is pretty much Adam Savage's advice, and I like it. If you are in the states, look for a Harbor Freight Tools near you. The belt on my Ryobi sander is from HFT, and the sander is actually second-hand! That is also an idea- look for a pawn shop! They have tools too.

You can use a pipe cutter to cut PVC straight. The blade will cut right through the plastic and cut it straight.
@stonewilliams82673 жыл бұрын
I personally would have liked to see some metal used, just because in the show that spear had a cool ringing when it hit the ground. They way I would go about doing that is to find a metal end piece and weld a rod to it and have the rod hidden inside the pvc pipe and make sure the pipe is hollow around said rod. That would allow for you to strike the ground and have the rod vibrate to create that ringing. I'm not sure if that's con-friendly but this is just my personal opinion.
@OdinMakes3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the Con, and their rules. The shaft may be fine as metal, with a safe end- some Cons don't like ANYTHING metal. I just play it safe. Also, I still have a 'video production head' so all my stuff is lightweight, and quiet- all the cool metal clanging sounds you hear on video/film are added later, when they can be controlled. On set the ONLY thing that is important are the actors lines. Everything else is added later!
@stonewilliams82673 жыл бұрын
@@OdinMakes holy crap, Odin replied to me lol. That actually makes perfect sense. I've only ever attended one con and I didn't have any props so I don't really know how that process works.
