Odin Makes

5 жыл бұрын

I visit Sherby at his shop and he shows me how he makes Dragon Balls from Dragon Ball Z.
See more of Sherby’s work on Instagram: @sherbys_cnp
Sherby wishes to thank @mudamudacosplay and @LadyAuroraCosplay you two were a huge inspiration for him to start making!
This DIY tutorial video will show you step by step how Sherby makes a Dragon Ball from cast resin, a silicone mold, and some grinding.
If you like the video, you can “Buy me a coffee” www.buymeacoff...
If you like what I do, you can support my channel with Patreon / odinmakes
Odin Abbott has been making costumes and props for years, and Odin Makes continues the desire to show you how to make cosplay items and props for yourself.

The skull bowling ball has been on the market before the Mystery Men movie. That aside, it's always cool to see someone make something that actually looks like the source material it's based off of.

I used to make acrylic balls for contact juggling in a similar manner. Instead of all that buffing, I'd sand it as smooth as possible and then I'd gently rub a few drops of new resin mix all over half the surface. This wet half would air dry clear, then I'd do it again to the bottom half. There's a risk of fingerprints and dust with this trick, and if you put too much resin on the ball, it forms drops that you either have to cut off and start again, or just accept as imperfections.

I actually did this...took me about six months total back in 2016 after watching tutorial videos on it. I decided to make a complete set of 7 and give them to each member of my family. The first thing was finding a ball that was "adequate" for the mold. I at first considered a cue-ball or a billiard ball that I could "borrow" from my apartment complex's game-room. But I quickly realized that a standard billiard ball was too small for my liking. So I went online and found a 3 inch diameter fung-schue crystal glass ball that was perfect. (Unfortunately by the end it was incredibly scratched. The hard part was making the mold; first mold I ever made and it was a nightmare to make. I followed Tap-Plastic's Mold Making tutorials to try and find short-cuts to make it considering that I didn't have enough clay. I tried to make it in two parts, instead of having to cut the mold open. That didn't work-out as well as the two pieces fused together, so I had to cut anyway. Still, it came out fairly decent. Next was mixing the acrylic with a slow catalyst and Amber color dye. The specific reason I made a two-piece mold was specifically to add the stars. The original tutorial that inspired me had a proven technique. You would first mix enough to fill the bottom half of the mold - effectively making half the ball. You wait about 30 minutes to an hour for the plastic to begin to gel, just hard enough so that the stars won't sink to the bottom. For the stars I originally intended to use these tiny red plastic sticker-stars; but after buying them I determined they were too small. I managed to luck-out and find some star confetti decorations that seemed to fit my needs. They ended up being MAGNIFIED by the balls when they were completed, so I eventually determined that the smaller sticker-stars (double-sided of course) would work better. When adding the stars, the first step was to coat each side of them in a layer of resin so that they wouldn't cause air-bubbles. I then added an extra-step that wasn't featured in the tutorial I watched. When I first tried making a ball, the Stars were moved around when the top-half of resin was added. (and there were a few air-bubble explosions.) So to circumvent this, I added a thin layer of resin on top of the stars and let it harden to prevent them from moving. Finally, I would add the top-half of the mold and use the second-batch of resin to finish the ball. I would let this harden over night - although it really only took just a few hours. The next day when I would remove the mold to retrieve the ball - much like in their videos - the ball would have a sprue. (though mine was smaller, considering I made a smaller hole.) I removed it with a metal file; usually taking several hours of hard-work, dedication, and dust...so much dust. Eventually I moved onto using a power-drill with a sanding-head. I would do this to not only remove the sprue but to also sand-down any impurities and imperfections in the ball thanks to deformities in the mold. After that was done, I'd wash the ball to remove any excessive dust. Then I would spend the next few hours sanding the ball by hand, first with coarse and then with fine sandpaper. Once that was done, I dry the ball...Then I would take a heavy plastic polisher and carefully polish the ball to get it back to its original transparent quality shine. It was a long and arduous process that was a labor of love. It took a lot of experimentation to get the right amount of dye per ball; too little dye, the ball looks piss-yellow; too much dye and it looks like bloody-tea. But eventually, I found just the right combination that I liked. The balls came out with one or two imperfections, but I'm satisfied with what I had created. The problem is, when I started this project I thought it would be a regular hobby for me; that I'd eventually go onto create a complete set for myself, and maybe sell one or two off to some friends for commission. But it turned out to be frightfully expensive. My first attempt gathering the materials alone cost me nearly 300 dollars, and worse I ran out of clear acrylic before the full set of 7 were completed and had to buy a second container. More than that, I soon realized that the polisher that I needed came in such small quantities and had to be shipped from China - too expensive to actually order the amount that I would need to keep the balls polished on a regular basis. More than that, I did all of this from my bathroom in my apartment, and my roommates began to complain about the heavy chemical smells from the plastic. Still...it was a lot of fun and it made me happy to have accomplished something.

More than that; I got so inspired by doing this, that I then thought..."What if I were to get a Bowling Ball...make myself a LARGER Mold...and then whip myself up some Namekian Dragon Balls?" I still have a mind to one-day do it - or at least try it - when I'm of a better financial position. But it would easily cost me two containers of silicone RTV just to make the mold. And probably an entire canister of clear acrylic to make one SINGLE ball. Not to mention, I'd have to get a bowling ball, potentially ruin that bowling ball by sealing the holes with clay, and of course make a container large enough to create the mold in the first place.
