The last time we put a bunch of compact SUVs together, the Renault Kiger stood out with the value it offered at its price. But in the last couple of years, things have moved on quite a bit. So how do the newer, more premium offerings in this segment, the Mahindra XUV 3XO and Kia Sonet, both recently updated, stand out in this segment?
In case you are left wondering, a Tata Nexon was requested to be featured in this test but Overdrive didn’t receive a response from Tata Motors by the time of shooting.
In this test, we take an indepth look at the practicality, features, interior space and ambience and driving characteristics of the top turbo-petrol automatic versions of the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Kia Sonet and Renault Kiger. Also watch till the know to know the real-world mileage and performance figures of these compact SUVs. We’ve also picked a winner based on our scoring system that should make sense of all of these factors.
The XUV 3XO, a mid-life update to the XUV300, is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol that makes 130PS and 230 Nm(250 Nm on overboost), the Sonet makes 120Ps and 172 Nm and the Kiger makes 100PS and 152 Nm. In this test, the Mahindra uses a six-speed torque converter, the Kia a seven-speed DCT and the Renault a CVT

Very well packaged in-detail comparison with no bells and whistles. It will be more of a comparison between CVT, DCT & TC which is really a good indicator for prospective buyers looking for a pure automatic transmission. I own a Kiger Turbo CVT and I do agree with the findings here (both good and bad) and personally went with the CVT transmission as the deciding factor. One thing I can proudly say with all the niggles and complaints that I have with Kiger (and have done Venue DCT long drive and test driven TC models as well) is that the CVT transmission is the smoothest of the lot which you can only experience once you have driven it!

3xo and sonet have different strong use cases. Sonet would suit an audience who is looking for features and less seating space like 2 folks travelling whereas 3xo is suited for 4,5 people travelling together and it will also make it safe for passengers. PD is chutiya, biased and paid reviews

My tata altroz xza purchased on August 2023, 9 months old, 10k KM driven. Parts replaced since day 1: 1. Front viper blade and stalk 2. Fuel filler cap assembly 3. Infotainment screen base border plastic 4. Right B pillar trim 5. Rear parcel tray 6. Horn 7. Rear ac vent slider 8. Fuse box plastic panel 9. Weilding on C pillar roof joint internally. 10. Rubber insulation of rear right door. Still getting rattle and squeaks from left B pillar and dashboard on concrete roads of pune. Can this be assumed as a unfinished product and based on this put a case in consumer court for selling me an unfinished/defective product? Oh.. i forgot. I need money to fight with any judiciary system in India. I am not that rich. I will get used to the issues and believe that i am a truck driver.

And the “nothing special” is what makes it a perfect family car. XUV is not. It is too powerful for an average Indian, especially for the elderly and the learner. Kiger today is what 800 was back then. But negative campaigning is what stops it.

@@Nonewon for me a family car needs enough space, comfort, safety, reliability, and a good driver. Yes, 3xo might be costly, but with little more money than kiger you will get 3xo. You will get good access to service Centre also, if in need. I think there are two petrol engines and those are not that much powerful, only high when you compare, but with its power to weight ration all will be around same. I personally own a sonet, if given a chance today, I will choose the same in this segment. Because it meets my needs properly.

Considering the styling, space, reliability and service costs, I believe the Kia is way better than the others. While the Kiger is just a beefed up Kwid, Mahindras cars, especially the first batches have their own set of fit and finish and suspension issues. The boot of the 3Xo is just as big as the swift, though it offers more space inside. If nexon was a part ofthis test, it would have ticked most of my boxes.

Rather buy a hatchback, premium hatchback instead of sonet ? Kiger rides more close to a monocoque SUV, it feels tight and quite rugged in comparison to sonet and even seltos. Also the ride and handling balance is again better than Kia cars. In real World it doens't look like a kiwd, its substantially bigger. And the fun part is, 100bhp cvt turbo is quicker than Kia Hyundai 1.0 TGDI with DCT. Also space and practicality kiger trumps sonet by a big margin.

Instead of these three cars , better go for fronx 1.2L (for family city drives )and have peace of mind sleep. If you are a driving enthusiastic go for turbo fronx or a better option is Brezza. These maruti cars are nowadays safer and they are always reliable, also don't forget about the mileage. After few years of usage you can sale them without much losses and buy another trending car of that time.

Fronx has been in the market for a year still the car has safely evaded crash testing results..I think u should opt fronx.The mind boogling thing is that u don't find features of 1 L turbo in 1.2 l top model😂😂

But not the case for fronx, Brezza, vitara etc. They might not score 5 star but will not be an issue for family driving styles (not meant for racing). As far as I know those who bought maruti suzuki cars are still running without any issues ( more than 15/20years), may be they are afraid of an accident and prevent it😊 and are getting good resale value for their old suzuki cars.

Can you please help me in choosing the car. I am confused between Kiger Turbo CVT vs Magnite Turbo CVT vs Exter SX Amt vs Nexon Smart AMT. My budget is about 11 lakh which one is should go for i live in delhi so little bit lean towards cvt but exter is new and comes with paddle shifters whereas Magnite facelift is pending and will come around 2025 & Nexon base model is available for that amount in AMT and can't find more about Kiger 2024 Turbo CVT

Mahindra has to change the white interior and the antenna.....dont know why they have not provided the shark fin antenna in such a costly car....also family with children will avoid it due to the white interior very hard to maintain especially in places where rain is part of life.....

Actually 3XO shouldn't be compared with these premium hatchback vehicles. In terms of safety , build quality, power of engine, cabin space , Mahindra's after sale service its way ahead. Of course panoramic skyroof is the cherry on the top. Only Nexon can compete to some extent but still 3xO is clear winner from all aspects.

@@jomigregory7253 actually only problem with sonet is it's suspension and space at the rear. I own a Nexon as well... the ride quality of Nexon is at different level compared to sonet. But the diesel engine in kia is a gem I agree.. but suspension is too hard .. and we live in India so it's not everyday we get to ride in expressways... Every time I hear kia suspension thudding I rember my Nexon .. that gives a different level of confidence while riding on bad roads

Title me nahi likha hai wo. They have also not called out ventilated seats being offered only in sonet. So much for unbiased chutiyapa. I have test driven 3xo, booked and cancelled it. The gear box rattles with vibrations. Kitna chutiya banaoge
