Do you remember the 2016 (year Cubs won) NLDS between the Giants and Cubs. In game one it was 0-0 forever and eventually Javier Baez clobbered a ball deep to left off Cueto. He pimped it so hard he sat in the box staring at it for a good five seconds. I think he forgot that Wrigley Field can be very unforgiving when the wind is blowing in. It looked crushed off the bat but it landed in that netting which actually hangs a bit over the wall but is still a HR. If it weren’t for that netting he would have had credit for longest pimping of a fly out.

Another factor behind this is that many of the original baseball stadiums were built in downtown areas of major cities where land is at a premium and they had to make the stadium conform to the footprint of the land they had available. This explains the short distance to the left field wall in Fenway Park in Boston (where I am) - there’s a road running behind that wall that the architects needed to plan around. And because of that original quirkiness, as someone else said, newer ballparks are now building in quirks even when they don’t really need to. People like it.
@alexisdetocqueville99642 жыл бұрын

Power is created in that leg that pushes down into the ground which translates through the midsection on your follow through when you swing and helps launch the ball out. It stands to reason the more power you are going to generate is based on how hard you push the earth down with that step and the higher that knee comes up, the harder you can push down the earth to generate power in your swing. Its a thing. For real. If you just stand still and swing you won't generate a lot of power.

Yeah, as a little league head coach, I constantly was trying to get the fundamentals down. Get the back elbow up, get the bat back, step and swing. Don't raise your knee way up when you swing. Run it out even if you get thrown out, and don't prematurely celebrate. Granted I was coaching in the 4-5 yr old league, but we were allowed to do coach pitch if we wanted instead of using a tee. Halfway through the season we had kids hitting bombs off of coach pitch while other teams were still using a tee for every player. And every one of my kids was a first year player and most at 4 years old. We were beating teams that had played for an entire year. Fundamentals....they go a long way.
@5hitwind52 жыл бұрын
I just commented on here. 4-5 year olds seem a little young to be hitting far. At what age should batters start raising their leg to get extra power?
@imalwayslast31702 жыл бұрын
@@5hitwind5 I had 2 specific 4 year olds that would raise their leg just enough and step into it. They were the ones hitting it hard and they were two of my smallest kids and hitting coach pitch which was impressive. The main thing I taught was always keep your eye on the ball, elbow up, step and swing and try not to swing too early or late. Hitting the ball up the middle on a line drive was what I was taught when I was playing. I had a coach on my team and his kid absolutely railed pitches(it was his first year too and he was only 4.) We rotated coaches pitching depending on who could be there, but this kid hit the coach that was pitching that day with a line drive on the regular. It's fundamentals across the board, while still being nice about it instead of barking at them like my coaches did when I played many years ago. Almost all of my team had to use the tee at the beginning of the season, but by the final game we only had to use the tee one time and it was my son...turns out he had a bit of an eyesight problem and needed glasses so keep that in mind. It happened to me when I played too at an older age and I didn't even realize my eyesight was getting worse. Fielding is the hard part to teach cuz they all wanna play in the dirt lol. We did manage to turn a double play somehow though. Just be patient with them, and practice the fundamentals until they start remembering them and trust me they will after a while. Sorry this is so long.
@TysonHook-22-2 жыл бұрын
@@5hitwind5 Antoneli baseball and others have a ton of great videos on teaching kids baseball mechanics/techniques, for the majority of kids you dont want them leg kicking at a young age, simplicity is always key. Making solid contact with the ball is the #1 fundamental above all else, with good contact the power will come. kids do all kinds of quirky things well at bat... the best thing you can do is instill good swing path and seeing the ball... lots of kids do looping swings and/or drop the barrel, spinning swings, swing at bad pitches etc etc.... at the end of the day, kids will be kids, gotta keep things simple yet effective and of course fun for them. Some kids just have natural talent though and will develop great swing mechanics at a vary early age, some kids can be coached into having a great swing, and id say most kids are just gonna be confused and overwhelmed if your start telling them to do and think about to much, well at bat. Im no coach, just play around and try to teach my nieces and nephew the best that i can, Antoneli has some great stuff if your looking to teach beginner to advanced baseball techniques to youth.

There should be a compilation of players pimping what they think are home runs only for them to be called out or hit off the top of the wall. I remember Acuña getting in trouble a couple of times because of this. Hit a few high and long fly balls that he thought were homers. After he hit it he did the slow walk out of the box and slow trot down the first base line. It was hilarious to see that "oh shit" moment he realized it wasn't a home run when he goes from doing the slow home run trot to trying to run hard after rounding first only to have to go back to first base and get held to a long single.

Fielders can lose the ball in the sun or trip or make a dumb play or whatever. What about the one where Bundy walks off the field instead of covering home as runners score. One of jomboy’s best imo. To be fair the O’s absolutely stunk since jomboy started until about ten minutes ago.

Does anyone know what site was he using to track which parks it would have been a home run in? Also, this was not really a pimp job

Odor. Love it. Guy takes a cheap shot for Bautista flipping his bat* for a no-doubter, even then Jose makes sure it’s a no doubter then flips… but Roughknob thinks it’s okay now to flip a half-second after his swing. Love it. And how he cowers back into the dugout. * Bautista for anyone who remembers the Greatest Seventh Inning Ever back in ‘15… flipped his bat not to disrespect the Texas pitcher but as a way to blow off steam, really at the umps for screwball ruling of the errant ball from Russell Martin throw to the mound hitting Shin-soo Choo… if that messy call doesn’t happen, guarantee Bautista doesn’t to the Flip heard around the world. And guarantee bars ain’t flipping like they are today…!

This is one reason why I’m not a huge fan of the pimping, bat flipping, and slow jogs out of the box. For one thing, you’ll end up looking foolish eventually, second I’ve seen it happen a few times with my team where a guy is pimping his hit, jogging out of the box, and about 3/4 of the way to first when it hits off the wall. Then he ends up with a 390ft single. If he ran hard out of the box he coulda been on third. That always annoys me, run your hardest until you see it go out!
