Not to mention, the use of half-century old tech on quarter century old Pentium Pro architecture really just flies in the face of everything SBCs are about. "works with Microstuck Suckface products..." I wonder if it will suffer from silicon degradation...

I don't have H4, but I have RK3588 (NanoT6 from FriendlyElec), a research on cpu comparison give it very close to the intel N100, so I expect the N97 to be around +3% perfs. NanoT6 running Debian bullseye (yeah, it is one branch back) is working ferpectly well and chromium is an accelerated version specially crafted for this CPU (the _only_ thing that is awfully slooow on ARM is when encoding/transcoding video not using the special libraries that can exploit the intrinsic encoders) - so the H4 should be working very well for kids (and parents;)
@Lurch-Bot1

If you're using Linux, why would you get a crappy old Celeron when the RK3588 exists?
@hankhulator5007
@hankhulator5007 6 ай бұрын
@@Lurch-Bot1 There is one domain where ARM can't really compete, it is when encoding/transcoding video, as ARM doesn't have the intel extensions it is ridiculously slooow with ie: avidemux. Of course RK3588 have intrinsic x264, x265, VP9, etc encoders/decoders (I've read of a guy that is encoding 16 simultaneous FullHD streams), but at this time it is difficult to exploit. and not used by regular software except chromium video decoding at this time. For the rest, the RK3588 is much faster than my old laptop (i5-4210M) while having a lower power demand - with the debian bullseye eMMC image and using XFCE :~4.2 W idle & ~11.8 W stressed using : stress --cpu 8 --vm 8 --vm-bytes 14GB --io 8 --timeout 600s).

@@Lurch-Bot1 not a "crappy old Celeron." N97 is an Alder Lake-N mobile chip with 4 E-cores and benches between an 11th gen i3 mobile and 8th gen i5 mobile chip and came out in 2023. It has AV1 decoding which helps a lot with KZbin playback. For its class and price, it's not that bad for general purpose/light computing. It sucks at gaming, though.

Yup, they have one, it is made of armed epoxy (d° PCBs), stacks 4×3"1/2 HDDz plus the H4+ on top of them, plus you have the cutting to add a 4 ports switch card screwed under the H4+ - HDDz are attached with screws but the box itself is only push/pull assembly. :) Note that with the 2 available USB 3.0 ports, you can add 2+2 3"1/2 HDDz (or 2"1/2) in USB disks vertical holder (usually supplied w/ a 12V/3A power supply), or only 2 and add a USB 3.0 5Gbps Ethernet dongle or even only 4 HDD plus 2×5Gbps Ethernet dongle, making it quite a good and fast file server.

I just bought a netbook on ebay for under $20. Granted probably not as fast being quite old but it has all the connections, is very small and has a screen and keyboard. These SBC's really aren't worth the cost anymore

Surprise, you can buy older used hardware cheaper than newer hardware. The performance difference is huge.

@tschorsch not huge enough to justify price of SBC's anymore imho. Never mind used, you may as well buy a mini PC. SBC's are only worth while for specific projects.

Thought x86 was 32bit limiting the usable ram to 4 gb?

Why would you run a 32-bit OS here? They're not generally up to date. Even Raspberry Pi is 64-bit.

If they don't give him a sponsored link, he has no incentive to put it there.

Aside from wanting to fiddle with it or use it for development, there's no reason.

Because they're not really the same. The H4 without the extra IO is more comparable. It's only $100. This is also upgradable where the other isn't really.
