Off Grid Warrior I highly recommend removing Batt Insulation from Flooring. It WILL get wet or damp & Mold & Mildew will Rot out flooring. Not to mention the bad smell. Take my word. Otherwise you must ventilate under the insulation which will help. Tight screening over venting will prevent insects from getting in the floor space. But plenty of ventilation is a Must!!

I never build a log cabin but I have used the scribing tool a lot building van interiors... I found the pointy metal tips to be a bit of a hindrance. I changed it out with the tip of a thicker knitting pen, which is much smoother and has a more rounded tip. It works very nice almost like a ball bearing. If you need the more accurate pointy tip you can always change back to the original metal tip.

You are doing a good job but it would probably be much easier to have a small chain saw for the notching and grooving with as much as you have to do. A little 8" bar or so would be much better to control without having to muscle it. I know it is tough to be on a budget but that would be a wise investment. That will be a nice cabin. The other thought I had is that mineral wool insulation is a bit more money (not that much) yet will dry out if wetted and critters do not like it. As an added bonus it doesn't 'air wash' as easily as fiberglass and it doesn't give you the itch when installing it. Also doesn't get in your lungs. It really has the benefit if your cabin is going to be left unheated for any length of time as it doesn't mold either. Just a thought. Is this cabin in British Columbia? Winter in October and Douglas Fir leads me to believe so. That means cold winters and long so build her snug. You are doing a nice job. Doug

I'm working out the details on doing this myself. I didn't see in the vid are you moving the logs by hand and if so how much do they typically weigh?
@offgridwarrior9 жыл бұрын
+Chris Abraham Hi Chris... sorry but I have no good idea how heavy these logs are, lets just say no human being is moving them without mule, truck or winch. These are fairly large logs for a small cabin like mine, you could get away with using dry, thinner logs and those would be much easier to move around.

how many days to build the cabin?
@almonjacob34969 жыл бұрын
Do you have to allow the logs to dry before using them? If so how long and do you seal the ends?
@offgridwarrior9 жыл бұрын
+Almon Jacob allowing the logs to dry would be ideal, I know folks who had logs (15-18 inch diameter) drying for two years and they were still shrinking and settling years after construction. I have also seen a cabin nearby that was built with green logs (8-12 inch diameter) and 30 years later it looks great. Remember a log house is a living breathing structure, log cabins require maintenance as the years go by. I am building with green logs and have not sealed the ends. Sealing the ends will help with checking. Thanks for the great question.

at 15.39 I can see that the 1st 2nd and 3rd logs have an upward saddled cut, why is that as the log your working on there will have the usual downward saddled cut. when I build my own log cabin this is how I would want it done, the traditional way, scribed with no petroleum chemical insulation between the logs and whole logs not milled square square although there is nothing wrong with the milled cut look if thats what your after it just depends on where its being built I think.
@offgridwarrior8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. All the logs have saddles cut facing downwards, I would not have any saddles facing upwards as this may trap water runoff. Unfortunately the pink insulation is all we could get at the time, I agree it is not ideal. I have switched to an eco friendly insulation recently.
@jasward38268 жыл бұрын
+Off Grid Warrior Hi ' I just want to say that I wasn't criticize your work I would never do that especially not having done any log cabin building myself YET, but one day I hope to have my own log built cabin and I didn't see that you had pink insulation, that is your choice to use it if you wish, I didn't think it was necessary to use it when building with scribed saddle cut whole logs. I greatly admire anyone who fells their own timber to build a cabin the way you are here, atb.

I think today we tend to over think and engineer things and it does take the speed and craftsmanship out of things....kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4qtfJdmp9B-qdU here is Dick Proenneke making his cabin, and see how he uses a simple technique to map the curvature of the underlaying log. He built the cabin in 10 weeks in 1968. The cabin is still standing 50 years later and he lived in it for 30 years through winters at -50°.
