Electric Future

The ArkUp is a solar powered, self-sufficient, electrically propelled floating mansion that can transform any harbor in the world into prime waterfront real estate. A masterpiece of sustainable engineering, This 4 bedroom floating home rests on a set of retractable hydraulic legs that anchor it to the seabed and completely stabilize the vessel, even lifting it out of the water. If you get bored of the view, you have the freedom to lift off and use silent electric motors to cruise somewhere else for a change of scenery.
Airbnb: www.airbnb.com/associates/955...
A zero emission offgrid home, the innovative ArkUp lets you live lavishly with total autonomy. Thanks to a massive solar panel array and battery storage system, the arkup doesn’t require any fuel, and with rainwater harvesting, you can live onboard indefinitely.
I recently got the opportunity to go onboard the ArkUp 75 and get a tour of it’s innovative features from co-founder and CEO Nicolas Derouin. We crawl into a bunch of compartments, look at all types of gauges, and discuss the green technology behind the sleek glass facade of this forward looking vessel.
At a length of 75 feet, with 4,350 square feet of living space, achieving energy independence onboard the ArkUp is no easy task. The lithium ion battery system provides power for all onboard systems, home appliances, and electric propulsion. The type of battery is similar to batteries used in electric vehicle's like the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S, or Tesla Model Y, or the Tesla Cybertruck. This large yacht is custom designed and engineered. It is definitely not a tiny home, or a container house.
The ArkUp comes equipped with two 100 kilowatt azimuth electric thrusters, that provide silent and vibration free electric propulsion.
The houseboats large rectangular roof acts as an ideal platform to harvest solar energy, but the vessels shape creates a tradeoff for propulsion efficiency in its use as a solar boat, solar yacht, electric boat, or electric yacht.
Set atop the ArkUp’s 2,400 square foot roof, The Solar panel system consists of 110 325 Watt panels that generate 36 Kw of power. Considering the size of your average home solar installation is about 7kw, this is quite a large system.
Born of these dutch roots in shipbuilding and architecture, the ArkUp was designed by WaterStudio NL under the leadership of sustainable design veteran Koen Olthuis. Inspired by dutch floating communities, the experimental concept envisions the future of aquatic living and address the issues of urban growth, rising seas, and dependence on fossil fuels.
I’ve had the opportunity to check out a few different solar yachts for this channel including silent yachts and Greenline yachts.
Everywhere the ArkUp goes its an instant attraction. As the hulking vessel sailed through Biscayne Bay, it was surrounded by a swarm of onlookers who just had to get up closer for a photo. In person the ArkUp is visually striking, like a modern miami mansion lifted from its foundation and plopped into the water.
Being onboard the ArkUp is certainly a unique luxury experience, but the company’s mission has deeper aspirations. With sea level rise here in southeast florida projected to be 6 to 10 inches by 2030 and 14 to 26 inches by 2060, ArkUp intends to develop water based housing solutions to address the impending climate crisis. They ultimately hope to create more affordable models for the average family, and even develop floating neighborhoods.

This is the kind of reviews, that I like - have you seen one stateroom, one kitchen, one livingroom, etc - you have seen them all, no matter how beautiful and awesome, they might be... ...but having a look at the engineroom, the technique, the dimmensions and what makes the boat run is much, MUCH more interesting.

We even say we live ON Urk😃. We are also active in other nautic sectors. Like those floating boat houses. But we also "build" big ships who transfer big stuff. I'm 17 years old now and following a nautical study. Later I want to work in the engineroom. But I have to confess, I like electronic motors and stuff more than a conventional diesel engine. Also a big Tesla fan🤫

I love the concept. One point that is not addressed at all is the operating cost. For yachts we are speaking of 10% of the purchased price as yearly operating cost. I assume it should be less for this concept, but still quite hefty.

This is cool, while developing maritime mobility fuel cell tech can also enable consistent fresh water access & oxygen production (from electrolysis) that can additionally enable submersible potential (whether from scuba, submarinal vehicle, or maybe even the whole structure). Climate change also has brought major storms that can sometimes be better avoided *under the water, as well.

So basically this thing is not suitable to go more than a few miles due to unsuitability for open waters yet has all of the high costs and maintenance associated with a full yacht yet encompasses all of the disadvantages of a yacht like massive depreciation and outright cost. The cost of this could have been 25% of what it is and just make it tow-able so it can still do the occasional short trip it will do from time to time. This is actually in competition with a coastal house and not a yacht and the house is a decent investment and can't sink. Good luck selling this or even making any more. It's a science project and little more. I'm a fan of new technological innovation, but not for the sake of the sake of it.

It sounds great, however, the structure might be able to withstand hurricanes but I don't think the solar panels would. And if those go, you're stuck in the middle of nowhere with no way to get to land and probably no cell service to call anyone. Also the legs can only go 20ft deep so if there was mass flooding, they would also be useless. Plus, if the planet warms up and causes volcanic activity, the aerosols would prevent sun to get to the solar panels.

With luck, probably. But otherwise, no. This one is obviously made for staying close to shores in relatively quiet seas - the opposite of open oceans. You won't use it to cross the atlantic or pacific oceans, but the mediterranean, the black sea, the persian gulf, the red sea, and large lakes or broad long rivers would probably be ideal. Since the black sea, the mediterranean and the red sea are directly linked by straits, these would probably be ideal areas for it, since you could move it around with a great degree of freedom without having to cross iit nto the great open oceans where waves can become big, unvieldy, and the distances enormous (remember this thing has a max speed of 5-6 knots).

That is a crappy setup in several ways. The battery and propulsion system is an utterly inadequate hazard-in-waiting, and failing to put it on a reasonable hull design is both lazy and moronic. Many of the "advanced high-tech" features he is bragging about are just standard yacht equipment you'd find on every open-water or livable boat. Basically, it's a crazy publicity gimmick looking for suckers with more dollars than sense. If all you need to do is sit at harbor in one spot, you could rig any basic houseboat with a solar system for a fraction of that price, and just use the diesel generator to boost a proper electric propulsion to move it, so at least you could move it against modest currents. It's not going to rock enough to matter. If you actually want to have a thing that can operate as a boat, for that kind of money you could get a real Silent 60 or Silent 80 that are perfectly livable, and those are properly seaworthy. They've done ocean crossings and even a circumnavigation, and the proper catamaran design is more than stable enough to anchor out or sit at pier, homelike, for as long as you like.
