Dave, I think one possible market for the ultra small Crossovers is the boomer generation who are tired of trying to climb in and out of a lower regular height car and want something a little higher that you can just sit in and not have to pull yourself up out of. Also the smaller car is easier to drive and park in the city. For those of us in Canada the 4 wheel drive makes it possible to keep doctor's appointments in the winter and not have to wait for the snowplow to come and remove 6 inches of snow every time it snows. Also with the kids grown up and gone there is no need for the big 7 passenger SUVs. Just me and the Mrs. scootin' around town, preferably in the lap of luxury

I had been watching this vehicle for quite some time, watching it being rolled out in other countries before here in the US. As soon as the local dealer received one I immediately went out, test drove it, loved it and purchased it. This is my 4th Honda vehicle. Go check this vehicle out!!!!

Thanks Dave, another great review- and I really appreciated the heads up on the cabin noise! That's my biggest issue with some of the smaller vehicles out now- I do want a off road, small vehicle but with some sound deadening/insulation- sounds like the CRV would be a better choice, but I just am too anti-CRV. I'm still driving my Honda Element EX 2WD with 220,000 miles on it (knock on wood).

Hello EMD.... Are you able to do a comparison between HRV and Subaru XV, not just an off road but an everyday driving - livability. 1. driving experience ( position, visibility, ergonomics etc...) 2. features value for money 3. overall fit and finish quality 4. Storage versatility (real life stuff like large travel bags, prams, boxes etc..) 5. mileage 6. final summation Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the hard work Dave. I had higher hopes for this vehicle from Honda. They have been consistently underwhelming me for years now. As a 12 year CR-V owner I wish this they had installed the flexible rear seats in the new CR-V. I was excited see a manual option in the HR-V but disappointed Honda chose the 1.8 liter engine. I am glad the HR-V is available with AWD since to keep costs down there was a good chance it may have been 2wd only. I was disappointed when the new Earthdreams engine for the CR-V was still around 185 hp when all the competition are offering optional turbos. Why not a 2.0 option? Give me an Si version with the 2.0 and a 6-spd. Not everyone who enjoys the utility of driving basically a wagon wants to drive one of the slowest vehicles on the highway. If mpg was that big of a consideration we would drive a Civic not a Crossover. I also was hoping by this time we would be getting SH-AWD trickled down from Acura since they had that in the RD-X years ago. Don't even get me started on the option packages which force me to buy leather seats or the loaded Touring package just to get HD and XM radio and NO I am not installing a new stereo in a car I just dropped $30k on. As it is I still see no compelling reason to trade my 2003 CR-V with a 5 spd manual. Maybe the diesel will be different enough to take a look at whenever it arrives in North America, if it ever does. The 2016 Civic looks great if I could figure out how to live life without hauling people or stuff all the time. Just me venting my 2 cents worth.

Correct me if I'm wrong but honda announced that the new HR-V will be only 2WD and not AWD, not? But i can see here (1:20 -> 1:26 and even later), when the car get stuck, the front wheels are spinning and from the back ones, only the one that is in the air. Honda failed to set the power to the wheels that need it more?!

To answer why someone would choose this over the CRV the CRV is ugly the HRV has style and looks similar to the Ford Escape very innovative. Another reason why I bought the AWD for mountain biking I am a single guy don't need the extra CRV room it is easy to get around in the HRV and basically it's better looking than the sister CRV

If I were to replace my 07 Fit tomorrow it would be a three way battle between the HRV, CX3, and XV Impreza. There's not too much in this video I haven't done to the Fit (no down hill tripod-ing, but it's seen deeper water), AWD and ground clearance would be a nice change. With its ground clearance I'd probably already own an XV if Subaru offered it in a shade of red with the 2.0 diesel.

Considering one for the wife, we enjoy your reviews and watch them together. We own my commuter 2010 Cr-V EX, my toy 2013 Jeep Wrangler MOAB Unlmtd, and 2003 Honda Pilot EX (ready for trade, or one of my kids in college). So this my flip the bill for the wife, to run around NYC, and have AWD for the snow, and the lane watch for my peace of mind. Since objects that don't move attack my wife, lol (bicyclists, parked car on her reversing, dumpsters, fire hydrants, and pink elephants)! Any who thanks for your efforts, and btw, get some long rubber boots, and a metal detector and find that GoPro already, you sound like your losing sleep over it, lol! Well good luck and keep them reviews coming...

@4GuitarTrance
@4GuitarTrance 8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Pena The guy takes a brand new tester car off-road, which was near idiotic in the first place considering the type of vehicle, and puts scratches all down the passenger side. (maybe the driver side also?) Obviously, he wasn't paying very close attention to those large roots he tilted into and the branches sticking up... nor did he apparently care. If this was a Jeep, or an actual off-road class vehicle it would be one thing. But in my opinion, all due respect to the reviewer who I usually like on other tests, this was one of the most moronic reviews I've ever seen. It's cool, but NOT with this type/category of vehicle. They are made for some snow, and possibly a lighter version of what he put it through... then only in a dire emergency. But again, NOT this vehicle, NOT for this type of terrain. I'm am glad to see it did well. At least there's some saving grace for this obnoxious test. But if I were Honda and I gave this for a test, I would force him or his organization to pay for each and every scratch and all damage to this vehicle, and never give them another for testing again. This, again, considering the type of vehicle, was sickening to watch because it was so illogical and unnecessary. Then again, ONLY MY OPINION. It's not the end of the auto test world as we know it, and not the end of my watching Everyman Driver reviews. Just incredibly goofy, and a blatant abuse of a perfectly fine BRAND NEW street vehicle. Almost made me sick seeing the scratches. Hey, what's next? A Lamborghini Gallardo on that off-road course? Oh really? Well, why not? After all, one Gallardo model had all-wheel drive! Why not drive it through the off-road course too! :-\ Dumb... just dumb!!!

Could you do all the hill climbs from a standing start at the base? That way we really see how well the awd/4x4 is. Honda's AWD is very basic. Personally I would never buy a Honda for its AWD. Honda has many Pro's, but AWD isn't one of them (Unless its a Honda ATV hahaha).

Thanks for the video Dave. I personally thinks Honda is trying to bring in a model to compete with XV Crosstrek after Subaru's success on this niche market.....and yes it is an interesting question of why HR-V instead or CR-V, I have a very personal experience that may help answer the question. I own a 2014 Subaru Forester and man I love that car, and couple months ago my younger sister is in the market of a new car, she is still a college student, and live in dorm due to the location from home. She was looking at a car that could give her a bigger cargo space than sedan; however, she doesn't want any compact SUV such as Forester but CR-V because she simply thinks it was too big for her, and that's where Crosstrek kick in. It kind of right in the middle between a sedan and compact SUV, and to be honest, I don't think we really have much choice in this segment. I can only think of Toyota Venza, Honda Crosstour, Nissan Juke and Subaru Crosstrek. That being said both Venze and Crosstour are just too expensive, Juke and Crosstrek would fit better for my sister's need due to the budget and size of the car. At first she was worry about that crosstrek would be too big for her still, but i was able to convince her to do a testdrive on impreza hatchback, crosstrek and forester at the same time, and she felt in love with Crosstrek. And yes she did get the crosstrek at last. I do have another friend with a very similar experience, she was debating between Forester and Crosstrek, and she chose Forester due to the space, but more room for her kid in case of an accident, but she was always saying she would still prefer the crosstrek if she doesn't have a kid because she still not very used to driving something "that big". Sorry for the story run on, but it is my personal experience on why people may choose HR-v over CR-V....

The tires in this video looks to be a better tire than the HR-Vs in the dealership near me. Aren't the OEM tires supposed to be the same all seasons nation wide? The tires on the vehicle I test drove look like they'd leave you stranded in the slippery stuff. Would be a shame to HAVE to buy a specific set of tires within a year.

Great review!! So this vehicle has the SH-AWD? (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) Calling it 4WD confuses me, as opposed to AWD. My understanding from my research is that they operate differently. I could be wrong, though.
@steviebster1
@steviebster1 8 жыл бұрын
+bburnsga It's not SH-AWD, it's instead Honda's "Real Time" awd. It's a slip and grip system which is pretty common in the marketplace. It's 2wd until it detects slippage then it puts extra power to the wheels that need it. Subaru, in comparison have full time awd systems where all wheels are getting power, all the time. In cvt equipped Subarus it's a 60/40 split until slippage and in the manual models it's 50/50 until slippage. It's the reason why Subarus seem to be able to go just about anywhere (within reason) and not get stuck like the slip and grip systems. Having said all this, systems like that in the HR-V suit most people, most of the time.

+Stephen Barrett Thank you So much for clarifying!! I have a 1999 Subaru Forester that I bought new in 99 when I lived in Utah. I LOVE my car so much, but will have to replace it at some point (due to a dishonest dealership north of Atlanta, who did thousands of dollars in work that didn't need to be done). Since there isn't a Subaru dealership in Rome GA where I now live, I'm looking at the HRV & CRV. I like both of those. With the Subaru, though, you always have to rotate the spare tire, to keep all the tires the same circumference...otherwise, it can ruin the transmission. Is that the case with HRVs & CRVs?

I've had a couple of Imprezas (2003 WRX, 2011 NA 2.5 premium). I love Subaru for their AWD, but am getting tired of the sub-par interiors. Unless the AWD system has to be the best, I would rather go for something with a nice interior and comfort.

PTNM15 i forget how the price point is for the cross trek but it its similar to the AWD EXL HRV, then it would sound like a no brainer, just because of the extra features. i feel like with subaru i guess just the cross trek, it seems really basic on the inside...the price may reflect that, but like i said, if the HRV is similar in price, it should be an easy decision...

I'm really thinking about getting an HRV. Its small but I hear the interior is roomy for its size. I want to know more about the cargo room. I wouldn't mind getting a CRV but I don't like the design that much. What do you recommend?

There is tons of room in the HRV, plus I get 31 mpg mixed driving on my 2018 HRV LX awd model. I have nothing but good to say about them, the seats can be changed a hundred ways it seems and I use the magic seats often. Very solid build vehicles, and no complaint with the cvt, it does the job great, plenty of power. I also really like the body style better than the CRV.

I’ve driven and camped in my 09 Fit cross country, and end to end of Lolo Motorway & Magruder corridor in Idaho. Each is 100+ mile Jeep trail, rocks, and washed out ruts & ZERO services. Considering an HRV for more ground clearance and AWD. Need to know more about function & reliability of AWD system. You mention “traction control”. What is it doing and is there any means of manual override or locking it into true 4WD? Also, how well is the bottom side protected against rock damage? I’ve learned to drive with one wheel on center ridge and the other way out there on the side. I’ve rigged a couple bash bars under it, but my biggest fear is still slipping into a rut or having a dislodged rock bashing into the cast aluminum oil pan / end of the road. Your mounted cameras don’t really show much or how steep the inclines actually are, the tripod shot with wheel off the ground does. Get someone to hold camera level and film car going up some grades maybe.

what is the road clearance on this little car? Also what's the difference between all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive or is it the same?
@weshasarrived2560
@weshasarrived2560 8 жыл бұрын
AWD (all wheel drive) is basically 4WD (4-Wheel Drive) non-stop. Your vehicle is 4WD all the time... And I 4WD is an option, when you want it on, you turn it on, and when you're done, turn it off. Hope that helped. :)

Kind of disappointed with the traction control, and "differential" system on this thing. Seems to be a trend with a lot of manufacturers here lately, to put open differentials on the car (instead of viscous or mechanical differentials), and then use the ABS system to "lock" the wheel that is spinning out of control, to direct the power to the wheel that is spinning less. The system on this seemed to take a good 1-2 seconds to engage the "locking" feature. That is an awful long time to be without positive power control on the vehicle. Where as a true mechanical system would be near instantaneous. Normally i would say "most people will never experience this", but i can see many people looking at this as a good inclimant weather car for city life, and in icy conditions, that system wont help you until its too late. The rest of what is great about the vehicle aside, that drivetrain issue would be an absolute deal breaker for me.

Less views of the tires please. I like to see what is going on with the whole car just like in past reviews like the MDX and Yukon. It gets frustrating seeing the tires that up-close and personal through the majority of the video.

The only thing I dont like about this car is the fact that it doesnt have a temperature gauge in the control panel, it just have temperature lights, and I already had a bad experience with those lights. The "hot light" tells you the car is hot when it is too late, you cant see if the car is getting hot and take action before it is too hot. That is very important for me, so that is a strong turn down for me.
