4:15 Yeah, there's definitely a difference between normal anxiety and an anxiety disorder. Plus, there's people with ptsd or panic disorder that have elevated anxiety on a regular basis as well. Bart seems to be thinking mostly about situational anxiety.
@SmokenHash
@SmokenHash 6 ай бұрын
8:12 Also, when someone is dealing with chronic stress and strain from these disorders, the world could become overwhelming, like burnout. So it's not necessarily that people haven't built a tolerance to anxiety over basic things, but their system might just be overloading, but from the outside it looks irrational. For the record, I get where you're coming from, you can't avoid life forever and just decide you "can't handle" anything. But I've definitely dealt with these things on my own to an extreme degree since childhood, and it can be debilitating at times. Part of coping is learning how to ground yourself and get out of that space faster and easier.

Agree. Situational life and death anxiety is a different type anxiety. (Also, not every single soldier rose to the occasion in war. Some people got paralyzed by anxiety in a situation where they needed to move and they got killed. Thankfully enough people were able to contribute to success overall). Also, as someone with “debilitating” general anxiety for most of my life, most people tell me that they cannot tell when I’m extremely anxious because I still complete my work tasks and have always been a high achiever. However, I internalize most of it. I get IBS, I will be too nervous to eat for days, I can’t sleep through the night. None of which anyone would be able to know unless they lived with me 24/7. My point is, I like that it was brought up in conversation but they should also leave room to educate yourself rather than downplaying what you assume is a lack of severity of symptoms.

I understand everybody has anxiety BUT it’s not the same as mental illness or chemical imbalances and disorders. And yeah soldiers pushed thru but they had no choice. It was either push through or die. And not to mention lots of soldiers who survived war have tremendous ptsd now. My uncle used to go insane from just hearing fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Ignorance is bliss is true tho. It’s like not knowing any better so you’re more likely to be happy. Whereas if you’re more aware about things, the more likely you are to be miserable, say the news or something.

@@user-ii2rf8cs8j Point taken in regarding the news. My dad happens to be rather fond of watching MSNBC... a lot. However, I am of the mindset of "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I can not change, Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference". Though the stuff going on in the news and the world is chaotic and at times tragic, those are things beyond my control. All I can control is how I react to it, and make changes for the better in my small corner of the world. Like caring for and helping those around me, and being polite. Even making a point to say something nice to a stranger to try to brighten their day. Basically, trying to spread positivity in a not always positive world. And to realize that even on my not so good days, things could be worse. It is all a matter of perspective.

I contend that the "bliss" is only a temporary feeling, like most things in life, when you discover the information after the fact, and realize that it might have altered a decision being made had you been properly informed with the knowledge ahead of time. An example of this would be when I was ignorant of the fact that there is a town ordinance in our area that states that you can't park a vehicle on the street between midnight and 8am during the months of Nov. - Apr. because if there is snow it hinders the plow. Yet just because I was ignorant of the law doesn't mean I didn't break that particular law, which led to us getting a ticket, which then cost me money having to pay the fine.

So mamy people habe anxiety today because parents did not teach them how tl regulate their emotions nutost importantly their thoughts.
@AsianCurls
@AsianCurls 6 ай бұрын
True, probably cuz those parents don't regulate their own emotions and thoughts (i.e. throw dishes, throw plates, threaten divorce, rope kids into arguments, etc.). Makes sense why those kids who are now adults are so disregulated and struggle so much with stress and anxiety. They probably feel like things are going to happen again it similarly (pattern recognition) and they probably aren't separated from those parents who refuse to work on themselves - thus reinforcing the same pattern and re-traumatizing the kid (who's now and adult) over and over again

Anxiety is normal, but like Ryan said, some have it to very debilitating degree. And for some people, it's because their brain wiring is so messed up that they NEED anxiety meds to fix it (it can also be a health issue causing anxiety, like a thyroid issue). Most people with a lot of anxiety know their anxiety is irrational, but the brain is very convincing. I.e phobias are a type of anxiety. There's a difference between people who have debilitating anxiety having a bad week vs people who don't challenge their anxiety and use it to avoid everything, but it is still up to the person themselves to deal with their anxiety. I have a treatment-resistant brain, meaning standard treatment isn't enough. That means my treatment involves working with a therapist, a nutritionist (I get bloodwork done), anti-anxiety or depression meds, and LENS neurofeedback. That's to say, treatment is still possible even if some of us need a little more of it.

Such an interesting conversation. I also think there is a sense of anxiety in everyone and that it's worse in some. It just depends on the person as to what works or doesn't. Some need a push but still won't do anything. Some need a little extra love but just try to act tough. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway, just having conversations about mental health I think is really important. I really appreciate this discussion. I feel like the biggest lightbulb moment for me in my 43 years of existence is was when I learned about Emotional Intelligence (EQ) & the power and importance of emotional maturity. In my opinion EQ is more important than IQ. I believe if it is normalized, mandatory to be taught in schools & everyone is given the knowledge to customize their own emotional care & regulation tools, people’s quality of living & the people they share their lives with will drastically improve for the better. I’ve heard Joe mention EQ a few times & It seems like his emotional growth has improved his quality of life & happiness.

“Winners never quit, and quitters never win.” That’s a quote I have hanging in my room. I’ll be vulnerable and say that my biggest goal I still haven’t achieved yet due to anxiety and just not taking initiative. Every year goes by and I always say the same thing. Makes me tired of my own bs. But I’ve learned that the mind is very powerful like what Bart mentioned, “don’t be paralyzed by your traumas.” When I was younger I always had that negative, fixed, victim mindset. And that’s what I see now with society today. It’s either they’re so controlling and insecure or they’re so hurt everyone is at fault and no one can take accountability for their actions. 2023 I had to cut off a lot of people who I thought loved me like I loved them. And near the last quarter of the year, I started putting that energy back into myself and goodness. It’s good to feel happy and myself again. 🥹

Some people are born with pretty fucked up brains or have some weird shit happen to them. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with acknowledging anxiety or taking medication for it. What is good is the person knowing that they have the power to change their life/feelings and working on it alongside anything else

I already knew some people would get upset by the over simplification of their discussion on anxiety. But at the end of the day, no medication by itself will fix anxiety disorders. It's always a combination approach which is why CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and exposure therapy exists.

I will argue against Steve in saying the WWII people didn't have time to focus on the anxiety, people have too much time on their hands today, wasn't like before where every day you had to think of survival first, literally had few moments to yourself to reflect; as you would need to gather food, water, make shelter and fend off predators, WWII people just thought of not trying to die that day. But, given the mundane lives people live today all they have time is to reflect. It is like told not to think about a purple polk-a-dot elephant and being in a quiet room vs saying the same thing and to run through an obstacle course of death.

@@BenjaJohnsonIII lmao just because we don’t have to stress about what animal we have to hunt down doesn’t mean that evolutionary ape part of our brains has gone away. the anxiety and stress those primal humans had is manifesting itself in different ways today because we aren’t met with the same challenges as hundreds of years ago. contemplating suicide when humans live to survive isn’t a healthy mental state. something is clearly wrong with you. expecting something bad is going to happen to you to the point of heavy breathing, sweating, throwing up, when there is no imminent danger is not a healthy mental state. not acknowledging the dangers of what dismissing mental illness can do is what gets people abused and killed.

Like my whole life, even now, my anxiety just feels like I'm constantly being restricted from breathing. Like my gut, chest, and throat, constantly feel this unbearable tightness. But I grew up thinking that was normal. Then the day after my 18th birthday I got diagnosed with such an intense form of PTSD that I was developing psychosis. Then I became homeless at 18 and now I have schizophrenia at 19. But like, idk man, I still gotta work, and provide for myself and like figure shit out somehow. Especially now that I'm about to have a baby in like 8 months.
