I wonder how my canvas baker tent would fare there, never had it in the snow before. I like how when you ran into problems, short on materials, camera broken, truck problems, you just found a way to make it work, you might not be hundreds of miles away from civilization but that's still showing some pioneer spirit.

Man, I absolutely love how you live. Unfortunately where I live there is no real nature left. Next year I will buy a small house and I will turn the backyard into a permaculture food forest. I really respect what you do, I'd love to do it myself! You seem a bit selfconscience about your living situation - don't! The hardest thing with everything is that you made the first step. You're living your dream. Rome wasn't built in a day, you're gonna have decades to improve things. I'm sure nothing but good is going to come your way as you settle in! Take care!
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
Hi Valya. Thank you for your comment... I don't feel self-conscience about my living situation, if I did I probably would not be broadcasting it to thousands of people. I have to assume you are in a large city somewhere (no real nature left), if you can get out someday I would do it... cities seem very unnatural to me. I love the Permaculture approach, working with nature & harnessing its natural systems. Reach for your dreams - make it happen! All the best to you.

Check into metalized foam layer to insulate the floor or top side. Some foam sheet may do well for mattress. The roof can use rubberized roofing but add venting too. You can add pine branches and moss to keep it cool plus added weather shedding.

Funny. As thousands quit the Fracking Boom each winter in the Dakota's because their tenting expectations failed. They also had shift work that eliminated the prep' time enjoyed by our 'Let's Do This'. This guy was smart enough to stay out of the concrete ruins of Detroit in winter. Where trees on private property have owners with shotguns.

Very interesting, I have no plans for living off the grid all winter long, but I have always fantasized about building my own off-grid weekend cabin getaway. I had always thought that I would build a stone hearth for a fireplace and chimney first, then a lean-to type structure around that. Yours looks like a hasty survival shelter. Thanks for the insight.
@offgridwarrior5 жыл бұрын
Hello azguy... Your observations are entirely correct, this project was thrown together at the last minute. If I had to do something like this again I would build the structure around the heat source. As we all know heat moves upward so ideally some kind of stone fireplace on the low end of the sloped roof. Thanks for your comment. Keep well.

It looks like you did some basic ashlar masonry for the foundation, maybe build your next shelter around a small stone fireplace, also maybe look into the Japanese method of charring split planks for the roof. Good luck sticking out a northern winter without a dedicated stove or fireplace, maybe build an alcove for the stove, just sayin.

Years ago in my area of Wisconsin, Trappers would would hike north from Richland Center and build very similar & small A Frame shelters like yours but the back wall had a fire place & chimney. The trappers would use these shelters as base camps for about 4 to 12 week stretches at a time to harvest Fur bearing animals and meat. It is well documented by historic authors. The trappers told stories how when they were out away from these small base camp A Frames Indians would come and steal the stored furs and even logs from the A Frames. After the trappers were done they would hike the few hundred miles back to Richland Center and to jobs as lead miners, farmers and fisherman then later sell the furs in Prairie du Chien while at Rendezvous.

Good video! Big thumbs Up on trying your experiment in winter, which is also a good rehearsal for actually Bugging Out! That looks like a simple but solid shelter for winter. How long did it take to build? If you raise your bed some more you will be warmer while you sleep....Also, Consider creating a Mini Super Shelter inside your place by adding reflective material on the ceiling and hang a clear plastic tarp to contain heat in your sleeping area. Glad you have a solution for your hygiene needs. Are you trapping/hunting on your property? Keep going!

Suggestion: 1. some sawdust.. in a zip bag.. put the extra batteries in the bag to keep e'm from getting soggy. 2. a biolite Campstove 2 (a wee bit expensive) that has a fan and charging port..can charge your batteries using the power of heat. 3. Electric insoles..that work with any battery bank. 4. some good..either personal motivation, fantasy, survival in the wild..wild foods recognition guide with photos, map reading books..how to carve stuff basic with drawings (hard print) and a map of your location and closer cities. 5. Axe and saw with their individual sharpeners. 6. carving tools. 7. clothing repair kit (needles, thread) 8. a king size wool blanket you can wrap your self in the blanket when sitting outside or out of your sleeping bag. 9. a good solar powered with usb chargable radio (check if it works in your location) 10. a multi cable to charge your batteries.
