I've always felt that completely scrapping Beastly Kingdom at Animal Kingdom was a mistake. Pandora is cool, yes, but man did they have so many amazing, creative possibilities for a fantasy animal area's attractions. And unlike Pandora/Avatar, dragons and other fantasy creatures have an enduring cultural impact that has already proven the test of time. Maybe expand the park to finally include it.

For me, the biggest mistake was adding fastpass to specifically the Haunted Mansion in Anaheim. We already had enough of a problem with congestion in that area because of the line for Pirates that always snaked around the walkways and Haunted Mansion cleared a lot of the extra mess up because the line was like 15 minutes max and almost constantly moving. Then they added fastpass and now you're lucky if the wait is under 45 minutes and you can't find a single shady spot to enjoy because the line takes up pretty much all of it. Add in the insane lines for the limited edition popcorn buckets, sippers, and churros and the entire area of the park is just a sea of people which kind of ruins it for me. I used to be my favorite area of the park but now I try to get both those rides done as early into the day as possible so I can avoid that area for the rest of the day.

I can't imagine how they would do Tomorrow Land though, you would think the smart thing is to simply level it and rebuild (except Space Mountain and the Monorail) but Disney has really gotten too cheap in stuff like that, if they were making a new land e.g. Galaxies Edge, Radiator Springs, Avenger's Campus then sure you close everything down and deal with it, but they're not going to refurbish a whole area, heck when they did Fantasyland it was really only some additions as opposed to a complete rebuild.

One of the biggest mistakes Disney ever made? Hmmm…well, in terms of long ago mistakes, I’d say relying on corporate sponsors in EPCOT. I know attractions are expensive & the goal was a permanent world’s fair vibe. But when a corporate sponsor’s contract ended, the next company they got to sponsor it almost always demanded a new attraction get built in its place and that was detrimental to so many classic attractions. The old EPCOT rides would still hold up today & be in the realms of Pirates, mansion, Junior cruise, etc. and every single one of those classic Epcot rides were replaced with far worse attractions. Horizons, World of Motion, Figment, Universe of Energy, Wonders of life pavilion was just shuttered, even spaceship earth felt the effects with its new ending. EPCOT was wounded each time it happened and that park is still hemorrhaging from those decisions. Now, in terms of a modern day mistake, the first thing that comes to mind, and it may be a controversial take so I’m sorry, Galaxy’s Edge. The land is lackluster and while I agree that Rise is good, it’s not that good. Each land on each coast cost over $1 billion to make; those r not $1 billion lands. They aren’t. Disneyland lost 14 precious acres that could have been used for other expansions, better expansions. Studios lost backlot tour(one of its thesis statement attractions), lights motors action(one of the best shows) and the Osbourne Spectacle of Dancing Lights(that was THE Christmas attraction in all WDW.) The land itself is poorly designed too. Their is so much dead space in that land, so much beige and brown, so much concrete. If it wasn’t for the Millennium Falcon sitting out, would anyone realize it’s a Star Wars land? Does Star Wars deserve their own land or lands in the parks? Hell yes, obviously, but what we got is not good. Star Wars deserved so much better. Ok. I’m gonna stop my rant before it turns into an essay on poor design choices. 😂

I can only think "Happily Ever After" cost a whole lot more to run than its replacement... surely budget is the only reason you'd permanently scrap such a well-loved, successful show. "Wishes" was so popular and so many people had such strong emotions about it, topping it seemed impossible yet they managed it! As a cynical Brit I can see how they throw every trick in the book to manipulate your emotions with the show, yet, I go along with it because it's just THAT GOOD. Even got emotional watching the clip here! Disneyland Paris - If you're familiar with OG Disneyland and go to Magic Kingdom, you go "where is everything? Half the attractions are missing!" In the same vein, if you're familiar with Magic Kingdom, Disneyland Paris feels like half the attractions are missing. So overall, it feels like a quarter of the attractions as its namesake. There's just not all that much to do! It's underwhelming. Beautiful, gorgeous designs, just not much to do. Have to agree that the solution for Tomorrowland in Disneyland is pretty much to close the land. They're doing it to Toontown, precident is set. I'd love to see a mid-century retro-futuristic take, in line with the original but just... more fun and quirky? Or go full Steampunk (but btw, Star Wars doesn't work with Steampunk, DLP) But they need to take a year off from having Tomorrowland, completely pull down all the dead bones, and rebuild. Commit to making it excellent. I do have hope that Figment has become insanely popular as the mascot for Epcot, that's gotta pull a lot of focus onto how crap his attraction is, right? So revamping it has to be in the plans... right? Surely?

I’ll tell you what their biggest parade mistake was: NOT doing some sort of cross-promotion between the Main Street Electrical parade and “Tron: Legacy”. Really think about that. We’re talking about a film that heavily features dark backdrops, lights, and electronic music, and they revived the parade in Orlando just six months before the film came out. How did Disney NOT make this connection? The parade could’ve been used to promote the film with a special float and Daft Punk’s music, and the advertising for the film could’ve mentioned that the parade was back. Even if they didn’t want to take a chance on a float based on the new film, they could’ve built one based on the original and then just stuck characters from the new one on it.

This is not a surprising complaint but the Yeti in Expedition Everest is an issue. First they extremely underestimated the amount of support it would need/how heavy it would be. Second, Joe Rhode continues to promise that the Yeti will be fixed, yet Disney itself has said absolutely nothing on even IF they plan to fix it.
@nimblehealer1992 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, since Joe is retired now and he's the Imaganeer who was in charge of the Yeti. I don't think that's going to happen

I wonder why Disney hasn't changed Journey into Imagination with Figment back into Journey into Imagination... is it because they want people to buy more merchandise with Dreamfinder on it, or because Disney does not want to spend more money.... But why is Disney redoing pretty much change all of EPCOT when the main thing to change was to bring back Journey into Imagination. Honestly all they need to make EPCOT great again is to bring back Journey Into Imagination.
@scottcopeland37302 жыл бұрын
Here is what I would do for the Imagination pavilion. Make a 3D film with Dreamfinder and Figment and put it in the theater barely being used (and re-use the wonderful Sherman brothers song). Then junk the ride and build an Inside Out ride stressing how the emotions spark imagination. Reopen the second floor and re-open the imagination playground with new exhibits. Also, bring back the rainbow tunnel!

I think their biggest mistake was not getting the theme park rights to Harry Potter when Rowling came to them. They basically created their biggest competition by sending Harry Potter off to Universal. Ether that or deciding to get rid of the Great Movie Ride and not just giving it a refresh and putting Mickey's runaway railway in the animation courtyard, lol

There was not enough love behind Alien Encounter. They went all in, and it was super cool and fun (got to ride the OG version). I don’t know how people would not expect to be scared going into the ride, but it sucks when Disney caves in to tame down rides. I think they would have extended ridership if they’d just keep them they way they were intended.

It was a uniquely thrilling attraction without all the risks that high-speed rides have.

Amen. After I seize Disney in a hostile takeover, I plan on not only bringing Alien Encounter back to WDW, but to Disneyland too. Anyone who complains about it being too scary and that it doesn't belong will get called "chicken" to their face in the hopes of getting them to react like Marty McFly when someone calls him "chicken."

I agree 100% on Horizons and California Adventure…. But I would add taking out Great movie ride and replacing it with Mickeys train wreak and only putting in new rides based on intellectual property in the parks ….. especially Epcot…. I like it when Epcot had educational rides.
@B0nd072 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of your list. I really only have experience with WDW, but my list would be: 1. Bob Chapek (I know, kind of a meme). He has been the direct cause of, or in close proximity to, most of the issues surrounding the parks and even the company itself over the last several years (not to say that Iger is guilt free, but at least he can pretend to care). A number of those things could be entries themselves, like increasing prices while providing less, charging for things that were free, low cast member pay, and poor attraction maintenance. 2. Replacing the original Imagination and ImageWorks. Which leads to... 3. Almost every change to EPCOT, especially recently. With the exception of Spaceship Earth (for now?) there's almost no edutainment or opening day/early attractions anymore, and it keeps getting more and more movie IP. Heck, I like Test Track (though World of Motion will always have a place in my heart), but even the current version of that is a downgrade from what it was. Innoventions Plaza was my favorite place in the whole of WDW and it's pretty much all gone now; the music, the Fountain of Nations, and yes, even the architecture. And oh how I miss Maelstrom and Horizons. 4. Harmonious and Enchantment. Both are downgrades to the show they're replacing. They're also both essentially the same clip show just with a different form factor. While one could say Happily Ever After was also a clip show, it at least had soul. And Illuminations was totally original; not a movie song anywhere. Even Epcot Forever was a better show for that reason (apart from the finale). Not to mention that ugly "star gate" and other screens permanently blocking the view across the lagoon. 5. Pandora. It should have been Beastly Kingdom. 6. Replacing The Great Move Ride. Like #3, the larger issue is that Hollywood Studios is also losing its identity, and that was the biggest loss for it. Runaway Railway just isn't that good. You can't even get a good look at the foot and hand prints outside anymore with a portion of the queue going over them. I like Galaxy's Edge, but I miss the Backlot Tour. I miss things like the sound effect show near Echo Lake, Streets of America, and the old cars there and on Sunset Boulevard. They've even removed Benny the Cab from Backlot Express. Also, they should have put the Earffel Tower somewhere else in the park or moved it to Disney Springs. 7. FastPass+. Possibly the most controversial on my list, but the old paper system was functionally better since you had to actually be in the park to get one. None of this reserving months in advance. Everything was more free form back then, really. 8. Canceling SpectroMagic and allowing the floats to deteriorate into basically junk. 9. Discontinuing the Magical Express. It was such a nice and easy way to get to your resort. 10. The Sorcerer Micky hat (and later the Star Wars stage shows) at Studios. It was there far too long and blocked the view of the theater from Hollywood Boulevard, which is akin to something blocking the castle from Main Street. And they're still making this kind of mistake (see #4).

I agree 100% on closing down Tomorrowland and revamping everything. I'm not saying that they need to get rid of Tomorrowland, but they need to give it a Toontown treatment. I've been saying for years that all they need to do to make Tomorrowland great is get rid of all the Star Wars, tear down the Peoplemover (or bring it back) and at least make an attempt at putting in electric cars to Autopia. I was told by so many people "Disney would never close an entire land for that long!" Now look at where we are. Futureworld at Epcot - mostly under construction; A Bug's Land - torn out and became Avengers Campus; Paradise Pier - torn out and became Pixar Pier; Toontown - closed down and is being refurbished. There are other examples but it goes to show that there's precedent for this kind of thing. It wouldn't even be that expensive! How much is it really to bulldoze the Peoplemover track? How much is it really to put a new movie into the Star Tours simulators? How much is it really to turn Innoventions into Space 220? It can't be as expensive as what they did for Avengers Campus. Not by a mile. Disney, it's time. Once you're done with Toontown, all focus needs to be on Tomorrowland, where it should have been for the past ten or so years.

4:06 I’m right there with you on Horizons. I remember as a kid my parents had these ‘Visit Walt Disney World’ tourism VHS tapes that me and my siblings would watch. The Epoct one (which was made back in like 1989) showed Horizons and I thought it looked really cool. But by this time us kids were ‘old enough’ for Epoct (that is wouldn’t get bored out of our skulls) Horizons had been shut down. Such a shame, I think I would have loved it even as a kid

Oh god. Speaking of the Aladdin show at the Hyperion. I was 10 years old and on our last family vacation in Disneyland for the next 10 years (since we'd be moving out of the US) and mom was really intent on watching Aladdin on our last day in the park because it was our favorite show. Only for the show to be canceled for the rest of the day because the Magic Carpet's foot apparently got caught in some stage mechanism and BROKE HER FOOT. I feel bad for the carpet but my mom was devastated. And now you can't watch Aladdin anymore.

If you're a fan of Horizons there's a video out there, where a guy and his buddy sneak onto the ride and hide out. They film their whole experience it's actually pretty neat. I mean I wouldn't recommend doing it but it was an interesting video. There was also another video Behind the Scenes tour of spaceship earth neat video from the late 80s early 90s.

I think the biggest mistake Disney is currently doing is the lack of original rides and more IP based attractions and activities. The only reason why Figment is popular is because the whole concept with him was original, and not IP based. Yeah, Star Wars and Marvel is cool and stuff but we also need to add more original rides and hire some people that can think up of said original rides, because that’s what Disney magic was, not some cheap scheme for upper middle class families to bleed dry just to visit some IP based rides. That’s why we need more people like Tony Baxter; people like them made the parks better and more interesting.

I used to hate Michael Eisner for giving the greenlight to remove some of my favorite classic Disneyland attractions. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but after knowing what happened to Frank Wells, and understanding that the 1980s-2000s culturally.. nobody really wanted nostalgia, they were more fixed on what could be rather than what was already happening. EPCOT really couldn't have been done any other way. Even DCA couldn't have gone differently given the culture at the time. But we can look back and say that we're glad they did happen because that left us infrastructure to build on for the future.

There's a lot of mistakes Disney has made, but I'll say making the Tiki bar right outside/inside the wait area for the Tiki Room as mobile order only. I'm not saying you can't do mobile order but there should be an option to pay with a credit card or something without needing the Disney app, and entering your CC info into that, etc. Like hell just have one of those self-serve kiosks like at Costco in their food court where you can order from a screen and slide a credit card in to pay. Runner up the vast majority of monetary ones like Genie+, Lightning Lame, charging for parking at hotels you stay at (I'm ok having to pay for park parking but not at a hotel I'm staying at), removing Magic Express all because Uber exists and then later back tracking saying a train will one day come by and take you to the park (and probably not be cheap at all), putting microchips in free refill cups you used to get so that you can't drink too much soda (or share with others in your party)... yeah those are the big ones, but they aren't too exciting.

Why DCA first opened the only part of it that I really enjoyed was paradise pier. Euro Disneyland was the best Magic Kingdom style park when it opened, Discoveryland was awesome, I still don’t understand why they changed the original Space Mountain theme. Besides, Phantom Manor is my favorite Disney attraction ever. It certainly was a financial failure, but cancelling Westcost was a plus, I think that current DCA is much better than EPCOT. Sorry, but I always thought that EPCOT was the most boring thing when I was a child, I’d rather go to the outlet shopping mall with my mom than hear Ellen Degeneres (I don’t know if it’s spelled correctly), talk about fossil fuels for was seemed like 40 minutes!
