Summary: 1. Don't pick sides in the event of situations / conflicts. Be neutral and focus on what can be done to bring situation to normalcy and progress with the activity 2. Document all the major agreements in discussions or meetings for future reference 3. Don't get personal: everyone has different views and ways of expressing. stay calm and focus on the issue 4. Stay away from gossip: It spirals you into negative energy loop quickly 5. Stay positive: Be compassionate, give benefit of doubt to others, see things from different perspectives.

I agree - office politics are tricky to navigate when you're new and trying to make friends and be nice to people. I think gossip is the worst because it's hard to know how to respond without also being a gossiper or being negative! But you're right, everyone knows who the gossipers are and everyone wants to steer clear of them so it's best not to get involved.
@AdrianaGirdler6 жыл бұрын
Lauren, it's definitely difficult to know how to respond when you're presented with gossip and negative talk. I find it's helpful to simply respond back with something positive about the person/situation that's being talked about. That way you're still able to interact with those people while not becoming a gossiper! Thanks for watching, cheers!

Documenting takes too much time and takes your concentration away from the conversation. It also makes you inflexible in the future if you need to change something and someone else is holding the documentation against you saying that you agreed to such and such and need to do what was agreed upon. If you're not the boss to begin with, documentation doesn't help for shit, because the boss has the authority to override decisions at any time and rewrite history as he please.

Gossiping will never end well down the line so those mainstream colleagues may find themselves down stream very quickly. Great video, but I think it’s incredibly important to distinguish what is petty office politics vs what is abuse, bullying, and sexual harassment. If a male boss remarks on how cute his female associate’s butt is and she feels uncomfortable, that’s no longer office politics. That’s sexual harrasment, though it may have begun as something seemingly innocuous.
@AdrianaGirdler4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Lauren. Abuse, bullying and sexual harassment is far outside the scope of office politics. I wouldn't consider a remark such as the one above to be considered office politics from the get go, this would be an issue that would need to be taken to HR immediately. Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch, cheers!

I have a colleague, I thought he is my friend or on my side. He started gossips first, a lot about almost everything. Of course, during the conversation it is normal to talk about my own feelings and all these things, I learnt my great lesson. In the end, he backstabbed me in front of my boss when I wasn't there. What should I do? Should I expose in front all the gossips he had talked about inclusive about my boss? On appearance, he looks like a genuinely friendly person, but I didn't realise what he is doing.
@AdrianaGirdler4 жыл бұрын
It is unfortunate you had to experience that. Don’t start gossiping to your boss about what he said, it will only make you look bad. Instead ensure you always do your best work and set up regular debrief meeting with your boss to review your work, ask questions etc. This will ensure when anything bad is said you have established a routine of reviewing your work with your manager and they will be in the loop of your progress. This will help your manager distinguish gossip from truth. As a side note, I know how much this betrayal can hurt. Look for the positives and choose to grow from this.

Would be interested to know how you can keep it neutral when a side (superior) forces you to pick a side through a yes/no question or an action (note you cannot go to their superior without repercussions as politics stem from there)
@AdrianaGirdler Жыл бұрын
That's a tough place to be when you are asked to give a simple a yes or no answer. No one should have to pick a side but everyone is entitled to give their opinion on situations so try that if possible to help keep it neutral. Wishing you all the best, cheers.

@AdrianaGirdler5 жыл бұрын
I would need to have a greater understanding of your situation to truly answer your question but here are some high level steps you can take if you choose. Step one: Get clarity on expectations, scope statement, your role, and document that. Ensure that you're delivering to everything you're required to deliver to. Step two: start documenting these office politics scenarios when they occur so you can highlight them in conversation. Step three: take a look inward and make sure that you've done everything you can do to the best of your ability. Step four: depending on that outcome, talk to the person who you're having issues with to get clarity on how you can work better together. If that doesn't work, talk to your manager. But the most important thing is always to document. Best of luck! Always approach things with respect and compassion.

Survive? Let's flip this around and use Miramax as an example. To survive the politics there, how would you navigate there? There is no surviving or tiptoeing around! The only thing to do is to do what is right even if you lose your job for it! That's what got Weinstein finally facing his comeuppance. When someone is is bullying, harassing, setting you up, stealing your work, they should be placed into the light of truth because that is the only way to force change into these toxic structures. Following the tips given here, are making sure that things what go on in companies like Miramax and others like it, will stay hidden and nothing will change.

Thank you for watching and for sharing your opinion. Every situation is different, sometimes walking away may be the best option to avoid workplace politics but it's up to each individual on how they want to deal with their situation. Wishing you a great day.
