as for the metric system, MOST of us here have a somewhat general understanding of it. as young kids we are first taught the imperial system until we have it all down solid, and then middle/high school (Ages 11-18) we gradually learn the metric system bit by bit and we go over the conversions and such, we arent clueless about the metric system but i would go as far to say that most of us can be a bit rusty with it at times when it comes to the lesser used “liters” or “grams” because its not used as commonly or burnt into our brain as much as “meters” or the imperial system is

The employee would also be fined 1st: $5,000, 2nd: $10,000 and if you still had a job.. 3rd: $25,000. I don't know what the fourth offense was because no one got that far. Americans use metric...a bit. We have a weird mix of imperial and metric in our food stores. Milk is in gallons, beer is in pints, fizzy drinks, liquor, and wine are in liters. Meat and produce are sold by the pound. Drugs/medicine are in cc's, grams, milligrams, and micrograms. Temperature, however, is going to be Fahrenheit 99.9% of the time. Americans do not have a good idea what Celsius temperatures are at all. Even doctors and hospitals use Fahrenheit for body temperatures. Personal weight is given in pounds...never seen it in kilos, and Americans have no idea what a "stone" is for weight. People's heights are in feet and inches, not centimeters. Auto mechanics maintain two separate sets of tools here for working on cars. Americans learn metric in school (alongside imperial) but most things are still done using the imperial system.

US automotive industry is using metric, it started changing over in late 70' early 80'
@randumo24 Жыл бұрын
As very well all doctors should use Fahrenheit. It's much more precise, and precision is key in medicine. Celsius is honestly a stupid form of measurement. Theoretically it makes sense because it bases itself on water; 0 being freezing & 100 being boiling. However, that's not a very precise way to measure temperature.

Also, the US does use the metric system but not across the board. Science and technology fields heavily use the metric system. Its the everyday life stuff that tends to be a mixed bag. For example, If I go to a grocery store I’ll buy a gallon of milk but a 2 liter of soda.

The tough part about giving a "when" for banning smoking indoors, is that it's important to understand that the federal government rarely passes laws that compel individual states to to allow or forbid something. And from the state governments on down to individual towns and cities, each one can pass their own laws, so long as they don't conflict with the laws further up the hierarchy. For example, a town or city can outright ban the sale of alcohol, in a county that otherwise permits its sale. However, if the county bans the sale of alcohol, no town/city can pass a law that allows it. So, anyway - back to smoking. As of 2021, 82.1% of the population lives somewhere where smoking indoors at some combination of resturants, bars, or workplaces, is banned. While 62.3% live in a place where smoking in restaurants, bars, and workplaces are banned. As of now, there are 12 states that have no ban at all (though cities/towns within those states can still ban it) So short answer, as far as when goes, that depends.

In order to get around accusations of age discrimination, some places have a blanket policy of carding *everyone* for alcohol purchases, even if you look like an octogenarian! Penalties for bars and restaurants selling alcohol to underage people are tough in the US compared to overseas, from what I hear, and "sting" operations to catch them doing so are not underheard of. The minimum age to buy alcohol in the US used to be 18, but the government put pressure on the states to raise their minimum age to 21 in the early 1980s, supposedly to cut down on traffic deaths. This video is also out of date on tobacco, the legal age to buy it has now been raised to 21 as of December 20, 2019.

Drinks are in one and two litre bottles as well as 500cm but their ounces are also listed so people don't notice. Milk is still in gallons, and cooking directions are still in cups, ounces, teaspoons and tablespoons. Drinking cups are still in ounces, but drinking glasses are listed by millilitres. Car engines used to be in cubic inches but now are in litres. Distances are still in miles adn speeds in miles per hour unless you're measuring for scientific purposes, then it's in kilograms. but a loot fo Ameircans don't know how to convert from one system to the other so tehy stick with the old imperial measurements. Temperatures are still in Farenheit unless your measuring for science, then it's Centigrade. Track and field is still in yards but it's changing to metric also. Our sports are in the imperial system as well. A football field is 100 yards, a basketball court is 94 feet, a baseball diamond has bases 90 feet apart and a pithcer's mound 60 feet from home plate. So no we don't often have to convert from imperial to metric. IN the late 1970s the President tried to move the US ot the metirc system and it was widely rejected. I don't know why, the metric system is easier, but it was jsut comfort with the familiar. No one has tried since. Instead they hae slowly introduced it inot food and weights and measures. But we still pump gasoline in gallons. When I got to Britain, i automatically convert the price per litre of gasline to price per gallon by multiplying by 3.8. We weigh ourselves in pounds, not stones or kilograms.
@christophermckinney3924 Жыл бұрын
For reference a yard is three feet or 36 inches while a meter is 39.37 inches. It's the conversions from one system to another that makes many people reject learning it. Until an entire generation grows up thinking first in metric, it won't change. All the rest of us who might accept it would still be converting things back to imperial in our minds. My wife doesn't like that a kilometer is 0.6 miles but a kilogram is 2.2 lbs. They should both be one or the other in her mind. I could never convert Celsius to Farenheit in my head until I made a friend from Canada who told me if I want to quickly convert Celsius to Farenheit, double it and add 28. This is actually pretty close. Ten degrees Celsius is 50 degrees Farenheit (a little over 48 F). and 20 degrees Celsius is 68 degrees Farenheit. But if you ask most Americans what 20 C feels like they wouldn't have any idea. Ask them what 68 F feels like and they'll instantly know. It's all a matter of what you grew up knowing.

Our attempt to convert to metric in the mid 1970s was a disaster. The plan was not well thought out. I went to private school and the Catholic nuns, from Italy, taught us metric. I still remember most of it. The public schools did not teach hardly anything. There were television commercials called “Metric Moments” which explained temperatures, distances and weights. They didn’t make much impact. For example, signs on the interstate highways were in MPH and KPH. Unfortunately, some drivers saw 100 KPH (60 MPH) and thought that meant 100MPH! By 1980 the whole effort was abandoned. That said, our manufacturing companies pretty much converted to metric in their operations. That’s why the USA didn’t convert to metric for the most part.

The smoking thing: All public buildings (including stores and restaurants, etc.) are smoke free, by law. Also by law, there must be a designated smoking location within a certain distance of a building. For instance, one I'm quite familiar with is our local medical center. The main entrance is on one side of a two lane street, and the smoking pavilion is on the other, with benches, ash receptacles and a roofed area. For years, people would just stand on and around the front steps (about 10 steps, I think, with little gardens on either side) and anyone walking in would be forced to walk through a cloud of smoke. After enough of us complained, they created that area across the street. Similarly, before the smoke free laws, the non-smoking area was always, ALWAYS at the back of a restaurant, forcing non-smoking patrons to walk through the vast smoking section, ruining our meals before we got started! When I would complain, every restaurant manager gave me some hooey about the fans and the kitchens, etc. As for alcohol, some years ago, lawmakers began to hold the sellers of alcohol to a much higher standard than they had previously, so that if a bartender continues to serve alcohol to an obviously drunken patron, and doesn't call him a cab, that bartender might be held liable (not the establishment) for any damages or laws broken while the patron drove drunk. In the same way, liquor stores and the employee were held accountable for selling to underage patrons. So it's in their own best interest to know to whom they are selling.

Police will send in people to try and buy alcohol in stores to see if the cashier doesn’t sell it. If they do then they will be fired and fined. Cashiers have to ask if you look over 21 due to the consequences they can face.

I’m 29 and live in Florida, but I remember going to Waffle House every Sunday after Mass as a kid and they would ask you if you wanted a smoking, or non-smoking section in the diner. I think a lot of other states banned smoking in restaurants before Florida, but that didn’t happen here until 2003. I may be wrong, but I think nationwide it’s now illegal to smoke indoors at any place that serves food. You can still find some bars you’re allowed to smoke in and I think it’s to their discretion, but if they serve actual food other than giving you like a bowl of peanuts or some chips, it’s illegal.

Correction* Nobody tips at a supermarket haha. Waiters/waitresses, delivery drivers, bellhops, etc.
@DashRiprock513 Жыл бұрын
In some places they have updated the restaurant laws, so the wait staff isn't depending only on tips. You get good service..... because it's good service, they don't have to fake it. As far as cigarettes go.... somebody is smoking.. every store sells them or vape pens. A lot of people do it, they just don't want to be seen doing it.

I would never tip anyone bagging at a supermarket. And anywhere in the U.S., you can ask someone at a supermarket to help you load your car-usually older people or someone with a disability. Never heard of tipping at a supermarket.

I love when they ask for ID. Makes me feel young. I usually thank the grocer.

Every time I go to a self check out machine at the grocery store in Texas and I scan a bottle of wine , a store worker must come over to approve it even though I'm well past 21 . Also in my state alcohol can not be purchased before 10am

Many stores require employees to see ID of EVERY customer buying alcohol or tobacco. It doesn’t matter if it is a regular customer that comes in every day.

Where I am in the US tipping a bag boy (grocery store) is not expected but restaurants it definitely is but if you get bad service you don't and should not tip lmao just make sure to not go back there again.

Restaurants that do free stuff before your meal are Texas Roadhouse, the bread is tasty. Olive Garden,free breadsticks. Outback steak restaurant, free bread and butter. Cracker Barrel free Biscuits (not cookie’s what the rest of the word calls Scones)and cornbread, There are many other franchises that do this as well. I have been to Mystic Connecticut where the host is at. They have an excellent aquarium with Beluga Whales under water and above water tank. I love how they are a mix of Whale and Dolphin.

I jaywalk and it's normal in los angeles, CA. You're not gonna get punished for it. And, I never got punished for jaywalking. No ticket. Nothing. Even when I did try to in Pasadena, CA, in the middle of a street to go back home, when an officer saw me, he didn't give me a ticket at all. We just both smiled at me.

funny, my physics professors were under the impression that a kilogram was a unit of mass, not weight.

It's for the person selling to ask for ID because there is an agency call ATF. Alcohol, tobacco and fire arms. They will use and underage person to try to by cigarettes or something like that to see if you I'd them. I've been to court because of that one time.

Smoking tobacco in public buildings is a minor crime and smokers might get assaulted too. Also, the American government has tried to switch to the metric system quite a few times. Speed signs in kilometers. The speed signs on roads, Freeways were riddled with bullet holes every time put up. So they don't put them up anymore.

The legal voting age and drinking age used to both be 21. However during the Vietnam War, there was a push to lower the voting age to 18 - the thinking being if someone was old enough to fight in a war at age 18, they should be old enough to vote at that age. That's when the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 by Federal law. But the drinking age generally remained at 21 depending on State laws.
@place_there9104 Жыл бұрын
The drinking age was universally raised across all the states to 21 because the federal government said that while states were free to set their own age, that only states with the 21 requirement would be eligible for federal transportation funding which could be millions to billions of dollars each year for a state.

Smoking is banned at the state and local level, not nationally. California was the first state to ban smoking in bars and restaurants in 1995.

Last restaurant I saw a smoking section indoors was I think sometime in the real early 2000s. And as the years go on, further you "have" to be from certain buildings. Yet, now you can smoke weed next to a baby no problem in most places lol. Most people don't say anything though. Some employees might.

As far as metric, people hate change. Just like if you were told your steering wheels needed to be on other side because others do it. Some things just not worth the hassle if it works, much more pressing issues.

The United States does not use the Imperial system of measurement. It uses the US customary system of measurement which is a bit different. Take units of volume for example. Six US gallons are a little less than five imperial gallons for example.
